I'm hoping we are blessed on the injury front this year and have the luxury of resting guys like Jones, JJ and Doc this year. Keeping the older guys fresh for finals is what has held us back recently in my opinion.
This goes for all lines across the board aswell, with internal development and bringing in ready to go types we should be able to rest treloar and libba aswell as give Bont extra time forward. Although younger Naughton could do with a break every now and then even if it is just as a tactical sub in games we need extra run or have already won, his bash and crash style meant he was beat up come finals aswell.

Wait JJ is still on our list? How many games has he played in the last 6 years? 6?
Even though I know you're being facetious, I looked it up.

He's actually played 90 games in the last 6 years, including the first 9 games last year, where he averaged 22 possessions a game.

Probably a bit healthier than many would suspect.

We're often too quick on the trigger. People here had written off Doc before the start of 2024.

JJ may still have a bit to offer but he's not the future. His pace and agility in traffic have always been his points of difference. The club's clear pivot toward more pace in 2024 has probably allowed him an extra season on the list. If he still has pace I hope he gets a few games (four would give him 200 career games). Whether that's as a first choice selection or as depth I don't know. We have definitely got some pacy options now.

Unfortunately he has always been a risk of a soft tissue injury and that risk only increases with age. It can hurt the side if he gets a match-ending injury early in the game. So I think this will be his last season. He turned 32 a couple of months ago.

A fit and firing JJ would make a huge impact imho.

I'm not sure the figures you're quoting are relevant given he's now 32. In his last three seasons he's played 8, 11 & 9 game and with only 2 games at VFL means he's been available for about 40% of total games.

If we get anything out of him, it's a bonus. His body has been plagued with consistent and various soft tissue injuries which is generally a sure fire sign that he's cooked. Even last year when he started off great, he wasn't sighted after round 10.

I agree that we're not going to get anything consistent, but if you can guarantee 20+ disposals from a player, that has value, even if it's only for 10 games a year.

He's on a minimum salary, and should we had delist him we're punting on another player with the last pick in the draft.

For the sake of comparison - while Freijah was impressive for his age and his late draft status, and we're happy because we expect him to improve, the average output of his games wasn't even that much more than JJ's, when he was fit.

There's the upside that the list spot might improve (even as a late draft pick), but that's counter-balanced with the upside of JJ having leadership, experience, demonstrated perseverance, and having a Norm Smith winner around the club also has some value too.

My post was in response to a post expressing surprise that JJ was still on our list and that it felt like he'd played 6 games in 6 years.

I thought it was fair enough to balance that view with facts.

Will be very interested to see how Libba goes this year. Pretty confident he will start the season in the best 22. However, I'm not convinced he finishes the season in the team. Looked slow and old towards the back half of the year, especially in the final against the Hawks.

Will definitely be managed more during games. Likely to see him get the least amount of time on ground save for the sub.

I aw Libba Snr up the shops yesterday and it made me think how keen I am for this game.

He's still in pretty good nick too.

(Forgive the cross-posting, interested in what people think of the below)

If Jamarra misses the start of the season, which way do you want to go with the 3rd tall in the fwd line?

Play Croft as 3rd tall if he shows he is ready for AFL footy by week 1?

Play a mobile tall mid as the 3rd tall (ie play with a small ball fwd line), this would be a Kennedy, Poulter, Davidson etc, which would also allow Cody to play more of a marking target role and then have smalls at ground level.

Play Buku as a fwd where he has looked good in the past at VFL level.

Switch Lobb back forward, would then allow a Buss, JOD or Buku to play back next to Jones and the other tall back.

Start a 2nd ruck and play English more fwd (unfortunately we don't have a lot of options here so would mean Gardner or Lachie Smith plays)

This one. I’d love to see Davidson grab the spot.

It'd knock the door off the hinges for Davidson who already has a foot in the 22. M.Kennedy is still on light duties so no guarantee to play AFL early.
One as a bit of a smokey is Jaques, he has been thrown forward at practice a little bit and has impressed with his capabilities above his head but also defensive intent.

Davidson seems the easy option here. He's fit the mobile 3rd tall role perfectly and has a mature body that is ready to go.

Kennedy might also be handy here as a 3rd taller forward when Darcy is in the ruck. Not for any stretch of time but he's shown he can play slightly taller and take a good grab when asked to.

So Jaques to follow the Ed Richards pathway?

Could only hope he has similar rate of improvement! Atleast Jaques playing half forward will improve the delivery into the forward line.
Was he actually playing half forward though? Or did he just creep up to the 50 Bailey Dale style in that clip?

Can understand him playing forward in preseason to "learn" how forwards work, in help for defensive positioning and reads. Still think he will end up playing off the back line though. Just hope we let him flourish in a position of strength and not what we did with Richards for a couple of years.

I love Davidson and have been pushing for him for round one for a few weeks, but it seems he has gotten a lot more run on the wing in the pre-season and this is the role the MC might view him in. With our shaky wing options, he may still be better suited here, but I guess we will see.
