I'm hoping we are blessed on the injury front this year and have the luxury of resting guys like Jones, JJ and Doc this year. Keeping the older guys fresh for finals is what has held us back recently in my opinion.
This goes for all lines across the board aswell, with internal development and bringing in ready to go types we should be able to rest treloar and libba aswell as give Bont extra time forward. Although younger Naughton could do with a break every now and then even if it is just as a tactical sub in games we need extra run or have already won, his bash and crash style meant he was beat up come finals aswell.

Wait JJ is still on our list? How many games has he played in the last 6 years? 6?
Even though I know you're being facetious, I looked it up.

He's actually played 90 games in the last 6 years, including the first 9 games last year, where he averaged 22 possessions a game.

Probably a bit healthier than many would suspect.

We're often too quick on the trigger. People here had written off Doc before the start of 2024.

JJ may still have a bit to offer but he's not the future. His pace and agility in traffic have always been his points of difference. The club's clear pivot toward more pace in 2024 has probably allowed him an extra season on the list. If he still has pace I hope he gets a few games (four would give him 200 career games). Whether that's as a first choice selection or as depth I don't know. We have definitely got some pacy options now.

Unfortunately he has always been a risk of a soft tissue injury and that risk only increases with age. It can hurt the side if he gets a match-ending injury early in the game. So I think this will be his last season. He turned 32 a couple of months ago.

A fit and firing JJ would make a huge impact imho.

I'm not sure the figures you're quoting are relevant given he's now 32. In his last three seasons he's played 8, 11 & 9 game and with only 2 games at VFL means he's been available for about 40% of total games.

If we get anything out of him, it's a bonus. His body has been plagued with consistent and various soft tissue injuries which is generally a sure fire sign that he's cooked. Even last year when he started off great, he wasn't sighted after round 10.

I agree that we're not going to get anything consistent, but if you can guarantee 20+ disposals from a player, that has value, even if it's only for 10 games a year.

He's on a minimum salary, and should we had delist him we're punting on another player with the last pick in the draft.

For the sake of comparison - while Freijah was impressive for his age and his late draft status, and we're happy because we expect him to improve, the average output of his games wasn't even that much more than JJ's, when he was fit.

There's the upside that the list spot might improve (even as a late draft pick), but that's counter-balanced with the upside of JJ having leadership, experience, demonstrated perseverance, and having a Norm Smith winner around the club also has some value too.
