In 2009 the biggest news of the year was the resurgent Tigers. Coming off the hottest 2008 ending possible (where even Bling looked like a star) the Tigers were ready to romp into the eight and the media where with us. Ben Cousins joins along and it truly becomes a circus, at the time I thought it was all good...let's all ride the Tiger train down town I thought.

How wrong I was.

The media turned on Richmond, similar to how chinese left overs turn on me the next morning. After the first round loss to Carlton the pressure was so immense our club was eaten from within. We couldn't even beat Melbourne!! You could see the media planting the Dustin Martin seeds not too long ago. No stories...no money, no interest...Just like Michael Jackson was sucked dry after his death for every bit of media coverage those vultures could muster, they were planting the seeds hoping that maybe one day Dusty would collapse under the spotlight and fall in their trap.

Similar stories throughout our recent history would be familiar to the Tiger faithful. We're pumped up and then smacked down with a vengeance and some cheap footy show humour. Not that the people in charge weren't at any fault at the time...

In 2013 however, it's that time again. That time in our rebuild where we're about to experience the reward in our rebuild. This time we've got barely any media looking up at the Jack Dyer stand at Punt Road Oval. This time the circus is firmly at Melbourne, Windy Hill and Lance Franklin's contract negotiation.

Without the expectation, glaring eye of the media and circus struck down on our boys, I honestly think we'll have a fantastic opportunity to go about our business beautifully. I cannot wait to see how we can go without the heavy criticism. I think it will give the young bloods some time to learn how to deal with pressure, then by 2014, when everyone's looking at Tigerland... Rance, Cotchin, Chaplin, Knights, Ellis, Vlastuin, Martin all know how to WIN and can do it confidently with the world watching.

GO TIGES and thank you to the others who are feeding the media whilst we can build our muscle.

Nice post champ. I hope your right this time round. I have a lot riding on this shit.
Ive given a heap of crap to my Essendon mates today and Hawthorn mates in the past week. My old man is a Melbourne man, but he doesn't know any better than a Tiger. He has loser written all over him like I do. The last time my old man saw a Dees flag he was 18. He's now 67 and Im 38. I was 6 when we won our last. That's some 85 years of loserism between us both. Incredible really when you think about it. Add my kids in and you top the ton.

To see Essendon and Hawthorn skid will give me immense joy, regardless of the circumstance. Melbourne are just no shows. Period.

Totally agree. Nice to see the tigers out of the media, at least for a short time. Richmond can now focus on the task ahead without unwarranted scrutiny. Yes... Go tigers.

We wouldn't be Richmond without the media baying for our blood and ready to pounce on our still warm carcass - it's part of the fabric of the club. The club needs to be hated once again for its success rather than ridiculed for its mediocrity.

Face the facts, we are rockstars - anything we do, any tiny scrap of a story is going to get media attention. They will do anything in their power to try and destabilise the club in an effort to sell papers.

This year, I think the club is in a much better position that the ill fated 2009 season. Yes the expectations have grown but I think the club has grown equally as much on and off the field. It's a completely different organisation with a new look playing list made up of predominantly young stars. The club has increased its professionalism tenfold and we now have new facilities, new sponsors, more coaches, more members and a new attitude to be the best. This is the new Richmond - the media and opposition flogs can try and keep us down but the inevitable truth is we are on the rise and they have every right to fear the awakening of a sleeping giant.

I'd rather see all clubs come out of this unscathed especially the players.
Where's the fun in beating half an Essendon team?

This year is going to be a bit of a letdown if we have players running around in the AFL with speculation of their future over their heads after the names come out in the media.
The game will take last place to the drug fiasco.

Feel flat to be honest.
