What was he doing so far from Geelong?

All we heard during the trade window was that he couldn't function outside of the greater Geelong area and that driving 90 mins to training in Moorabbin was so crippling that we simply had to give him up for SFA.
I’m pretty sure we didn’t hear that. We heard he had mental issues and would be best around family. He had been in lorne for the last month. Obviously something brought him here. He does have a partner. Maybe she wanted to come here.

Pretty sure they said they aren’t looking for anyone so it’s a private matter. That is where it will end. Don’t think it’s selfish at all

When does it become a private matter?

Three possible scenarios
1. Deliberate self
2. Deliberate other
3. Accident/misadventure

Media reporting is unclear. On one hand Jack won’t give a statement to police & on the other hand it’s a private matter & police aren’t looking for a culprit.

If it’s scenario 3 it is in Jack’s/Geelong’s interest to release a statement to at least protect his/the clubs reputation.

The longer it takes to release anything the worse the optics look - yes it matters as a public figure.

He's a public figure so he's going to be scrutinised regardless. He's in more trouble than I thought regardless also. The media circus on top of what he's dealing with isn't going to help, he's already shy and hates being in the public eye. From that article it sounds self inflicted, he's obviously in a bad place. I was pissed off with Geelong paying **** all for him but now get why. He really lucked out on the timing, if a normal season was under way he might be too busy having to readjust to a new club and his life might be a bit more secure.

I would imagine if it was self inflicted he would get plenty of public support & sympathy. Scrutiny will come from the regular trolls but it won’t be anywhere near as bad as the other two possible scenarios, especially if it was an avoidable altercation which lead to the incident.

I hope theres something in place for him to run away to or hide somewhere if that’s what he’s feeling . Last things he’d want is to have cameras in his face and people in his space .
he needs to be honest with himself maybe and go and do what he needs to be free and that’s probably not playing footy

If it starts to look worse Geelong will be ok. The media will just wheel out the ol "a former stkilda player" and normality will be restored. .

The messaging was that Jack wanted to be near his family in the Geelong area.

This meant that it was not possible for him to drive 90mins each way to get to Moorabbin for training during the week and honor the last year of his deal so the only option was to take a nothing pick form the Cats so he could go and play there.

The club had plenty of options to either keep Steven at the club or let him retire/walk with dignity.

- Hire a driver to get him to training if Steven is worried about concentrating on the roads.
- Limit his training during the week. Possibly only attends 3 sessions vs 4 or 5.
- Keep him listed but let him take time off from the game. If he returns in better health it's for the Saints.
- Keep him listed and let him walk to the Cats at the end of 2020 as a FA. The compo pick would have been about the same.
- Let him retire. He has been paid handsomely. Spending a year playing for Lara might be the best thing for him.
- Push the Cats for a higher pick. At the time everyone believed his health would improve & he would be a gun worthy of more that pick 50+

Instead we bent over and got reamed.

No hard feelings for the Cats. Good for them on working the situation perfectly.

Steven can **** off and the club hopefully learns a lesson on trying to get the most value out of a deal.

You have no idea. He has been at lorne for a month. He was in lorne on Friday. He has a girlfriend who may have wanted to come here. One day in a month isn’t daily travelling. Maybe comment when you know more.

Ok I’m sure he will take your advise because I’m sure he is mentally in a good state.

If there’s some campaigner going around stabbing other campaigners then it’s in the public’s interest to find the campaigner before he stabs another campaigner I would’ve thought. Regardless if Jack is protecting himself or someone else he’s being a selfish campaigner IMHO.
That's an Irvine Welsh quote, right?

Jack Steven not assisting Police suggests he has something to hide? From experience his injuries are either domestic violence, self inflicted or drug related all of which are concerning for Geelong. Its looking more and more like the club letting him go was the right move, its just a shame it didnt occur when he still had some trade value.

So he can never come back to Melbourne is what you're saying.

God who cares about the trade too, seriously. He is in a bad way and people still want to discuss a trade. Is it really that important.

Footy and winning trades is much more important than an ex saints player who had the hide to leave.

In all seriousness if Jack isn't honest about how he got stabbed it's actually an AFL integrity issue. A pretty serious one at that.

You can't have players going around getting stabbed and acting like nothing happened.

The risk is that one of triggering bros points is what happened which means you have a potential integrity issue.

Some on here have been downright idiots and some have said very logical things. The problem is what is logical to us doesn’t seem logical to Jack sometimes. You don’t have to know him to realise he some pretty big problems. You only have to look at the last couple of years. So remember when you say logical things I’m not sure jack thinks the same.

Ah stop it, everyone stop being so serious, lets all relax, who cares about Jack, we lost a trade, that's the bigger issue.

I don't get it why people think a player who devoted just about his whole career at one football club wants to leave , cop's any heat.
He gave his best for a club that has battled week after week and now at 30 he wants a change - we also have to remember when a club doesn't want you , your out the door .

This is all ridiculous and the opinion of somebody who has no idea of the facts and of how footy clubs are run.
Geelong knew exactly what they were getting into and so did the Saints, this is the reason pick 58 was traded for Jack.
