That was the last afternoon Grand Final

DO NOT WANT!!!

And seriously - all those saying "the atmosphere would be amazing".. WTF - the atmosphere at a GF is ALWAYS amazing!
I've only flown over to one grand final but the atmosphere was terrible. Worse than any home and away game. You can't expect a good atmosphere while the afl keeps whoring itself out to corporates. Fill it up with actual fans and it would have a good atmosphere.

Was this one of the Eagles/Swans Grand Finals? I've been to the 2008, 09, and 11 Grand Finals and found that, with two Victorian clubs competing, all 3 had a fantastic atmosphere.
The best atmosphere I've experienced at any game though was not at a GF (it was the 07 Prelim). But yes, with the MCG full of true supporters on GF day, the atmosphere would be even more electric.

Inevitable. I don't really mind to be honest, because the gloss of a Premiership isn't dependent on the colour of the sky. It's still on the last day of September, it's still one of the biggest days in the country, and it's still the game that decides the world's best footy team.

I'd like it even more if the AFL freed up some more tickets. After all, a night GF is all about the extra TV dollars. Surely this was written into the current AFL/7/Fox deal, so there'd be finances to cover the loss of tradition. I'm sure the AFL could still make money from this venture if they gave even 3,000 tickets to fans.

yeah it was 05. best atmosphere i've ever experienced was when collingwood beat us in extra time. that was epic between q4 and OT.

It would be good for us Aussies over in London! We wouldn't need to get up at the crack of dawn 5am, a more leisurely 8am. It would be a late night for the USA based aussies though..

Yep. I can see arguments for both sides but would prefer they kept it in the day so the broadcast starts at 8:30pm here rather than 11:30pm. But I doubt Canadian viewership is a top concern :p

If TV ratings are the main aim, and tradition doesn't matter, then it should be time to end the monopoly the MCG has on the grand final.

I'm sure that the stadium upgrades planned in WA and SA would change if there was a possibility of an AFL grand final being hosted there. Stadium Australia is big enough to host the grand final already.

If Sydney finished higher than Hawthorn, and Stadium Australia was available, then what is the reason for hosting it at the MCG? Tradition? Meaningless. It's all about growing the game, and holding the game in Sydney would attract a tonne of interest. It would not be gimmicky either, as Sydney would have earned the right to host the grand final.

Let's say there's a derby grand final in a few years. Why make both sets of fans travel 3000km to watch a game that they can see at the new 80,000 seat stadium in Burswood?

In fact, we could start the game at 3pm Perth time, which would show at 5pm AEST, meaning we have the perfect timeslot to TV audiences and get the novelty of a day grand final.

It's time. End the monopoly the MCG has on the grand final.

So what you're saying is, we should have a night GF because you believe night games are better to watch? That resembles more of an opinion to me than 'proof'.

Definitely a lot of that.

Think of the history of the game for a second. It's never being "scared of change" with this issue. It is respecting the ultimate tradition. Grand final day and starting in the afternoon for that day is one of the only traditions left. The slow transitions to other things, expanding comp, night games more prevalent, twilight H&A. All successful because they don't violate that one day in September.

Think of the hilight packages that all have day footage and then suddenly there would be night footage when you have GF mash ups. It is lame. They have all season long to have football seen at night and make money from it.

I hope G. Whateley is wrong. I remember a quote from just a few years ago on this topic bought up maybe on a grand final. A special commentator said "I Don't forsee it changing in my lifetime".....and they were flag waving tradition. I believed that statement and hoped it was true.

It seemed everyone talking believed the tradition was something to cherish. Where has that sentiment gone from our commentators/players/AFL in 2012???? I want the world to have flying cars before we ruin the tradition of the national anthem on GF day. I want to be too old to care, too jaded. I believe in the above quote and I'm pretty concerned that players have not sided with this issue.

[Did meatloaf tank his performance for double pay from A.D???] #conspiracytoderaildaygame

I feel gutted now just thinking the day tradition change as a possibility... I would be truly shattered seeing players kicking a yellow ball on the big stage, and the final siren sounding in artificial light. (and don't get me wrong, I love night games in the season, even in big games in the finals weeks leading to the GF)

Fair enough if you don't care, however I don't really see any good reason to move it. And yes, I do genuinely believe there would be less interest in a twilight/night GF- TV figures do not necessarily correlate to additional popularity/interest, the vast majority of footy fans don't want it, more inconvenient for families, less people would have BBQs/get pissed, and it would disrupt the rituals of many on GF day (amongst other things).

I reckon the vast majority really don't care and will continue watching regardless, along with those new extra TV figures people. Even those rusted-on traditionalists will be hard pressed to boycott. Why would they, over something as petty as a timeslot, a tradition that grew out of the fact that technology dictated that all matches had to be played during the day? We've had night finals for twenty years so that's now a tradition, in twenty years time night grand finals will be a tradition. Traditions change, that's why there's no point being too hung up on them.

Friday night footy to watch > saturday afternoon for atmosphere

don't know how much more proof you want

A blockbuster day game with 90,000 is always better than a blockbuster night game. The fact its usually 5-10 degrees warmer for fans and supporters is a major plus

I went to the HAwks/Pies final this year and basically just spent the whole night shivering with my hands in my pockets. No where near as good as a day game on perfect 20 degree afternoon!!

A night grand final is about money. The game is always better during the day. But the money men don't care about the game, it's all bottom line stuff to them.

If TV ratings are the main aim, and tradition doesn't matter, then it should be time to end the monopoly the MCG has on the grand final.

There are many reasons why the grand final cannot move that go beyond tradition. It would be a logistical nightmare to organise a match of that magnitude with only a week's notice. If Gold Coast made the grand final would we need to play on a ground that only holds 25,000 people? What if the home team's ground was booked for rugby or cricket? If Adelaide can only draw 30,000 to a qualifying final how are they meant to draw 100,000 to a grand final?

I take it you have not been to the MCG when it is full. Sporting capital of Australia for more than just tradition.

You can say that about the final of literally every major sport in the world. It's just the business of modern sport, live with it.

Why am I not surprised? It is all about what is better for ****ing sydney and brisbane. They know that if they put it on at that time they will get more people watching in league territory who will be sitting down eating and watching.
Twilight is the worst thing that has ever happened to footy, 5pm is just a terrible nothing time.
