Saints apparently certain to get Zak Jones. Devastating Boris, were you saying a while back that we were considering him? Can't say I'm that upset.
As for the Frost situation, very typical behaviour from player agents. True parasites. Always leaking information into the media to spin stories to suit their needs. Every year it gets worse. The games they play are pathetic. Surely they must know everyone sees through them?
As for the rest of the comments on here of late...boy oh boy wowee

Yeah we were right into as late as 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately the saints can just sail into any conversation and start throwing Oprah cash around. Hill and Jones will dent that but losing Steven gives them even more.

Whoever mentioned Puopolo..

PAUL PUOPOLO (HAW)

Another one who is up for grabs. Melbourne needs some help in the small forward department but the Dees don’t seem to be interested. Cards look marked at the Hawks.

Me. Hawks looking to jettison some fat so they can make another swoop from nowhere.

And the real question is, how did you know the answer?

Because I was a teenager in the 90s and there was only five channels on telly, or only three if you're not interested in Spanish news and the 7:30 Report. The internet consisted of Yahoo and AOL search engines that you could use to look up the three Geocities websites that existed back in 1994. Trying to find pr0n was a risky click because you'd have to come back in two hours to see if the picture that had finally finished loading was of a naked woman rather than some guy's gaping arseh*le. Still, we'll always have zombo.com.

All of this resonates with my youth except... what is zombo??

hot take - this is the s**ttest offseason we've had since Neeld's 'Moneyball' madness where we landed the big fish of Shannon Byrnes.

The players we are targetting are boring, out best backman in 2019 is likely on the move, and the 'Yze for assistant coach' bandwagon has dissapeared into thin air.

Id give anything for at least a bit of excitement, even a late season coup sacking Goodwin would satisfy my needs. Least excited ive been for an upcoming season in a long time.
I mean... The off season hasn't even started yet

Seeing Tom Lynch win it for the Tigers last night really irks me. For starters I can't stand them. But secondly free agency is such a joke and he is the perfect example. But I still struggle to work out how they can pay Lynch, Martin, Rance etc all close to or over 1mill, yet we can't scrape some coin together to at least garner some interest from Whitfield. What happened to the money we wanted to use on Gaff???

That’s a really bloody good question.

Rance - May
Grimes - Lever
Martin - Oliver
Riewoldt - Tmac
Gawn - Lynch
Cotchin - Viney
Edwards - Brayshaw

Gawn is the only one who deserves to be on pay parity so I don't understand how we ****ed our cap so bad.

I know Riewoldt chose to ask for a reduced salary in order to fit Lynch in but he'd still be on good coin. Plus that's what successful clubs do too; take pay cuts to have sustained success. Now we've had one rubbish year our players will be back to thinking of themselves. That's not a dig at thrm as they only have short careers and not many people would do a Riewoldt. But if we wanted to get serious about freeing up space to improve our team I'd love to see it! :p

I fear that with one horror year we've now made ourselves undesirable to good players. They won't consider us unless we pay well over, and now apparently we can't do that because there's no cash left!

I really don't understand why there's a minimum salary cap spend. Maximum limit to ensure some kind of sustainability for the competition, sure, but the minimum spend is a joke and is redundant. Its so easy for players to move now that if one club wants to low-ball them, they can easily move to another club to get paid their perceived worth. All that minimum spend achieves is ensuring that clubs with bad lists pay overs. What an absolute con job the AFLPA pulled.

This is a good point. We had to do it back 7-8 yrs ago. Now Gold Coast are facing the same problem. Geez playing for Gold coast would be like going to work in the mines! Leave home at 18, work hard for 2 yrs to get paid way too well for your age, then come back home loaded and with a new job.
But I guess if there was no minimum then almost noone would be at GC right now.

It's Dangerfield and his woe is me tale of not being paid enough. They now let teams go over the maximum for a brief period as long as they bring it under the year after, don't they?

Yeah, I think they're allowed some sort of carry over now they can use to splurge the next year. Its still only a small fraction of the total cap; 5% if I recall correctly.

Brayshaw and Viney aren’t even on $1M/year between them.

So the total for this year was $12.122M (min), $12.76M (Max)

Avg Afl wage = $304k

So, if we take the above at face value, in theory we should be freeing up $1.4M in cap space at least with the guys currently crossed out. Not sure if I've missed anyone there. Jones can also look forward to a substantially reduced contract, but part of his salary wouldn't count to the cap due to the number of years he's played for us, too. The guys in green would be looking for pay rises, so that'd eat up a chunk, but why wouldn't we be able to afford a very good player if one became available?

Someone walk me through how Kade Kolodashnij can be on more than the average wage given he's hardly played a game for three years. Ditto AVB. We're also paying the Pig a primo salary for a decent rebounding defender. Also paying Preuss a lot to be a backup ruckman. ANB and Stretch have also done well to land decent salaries for players who are barely AFL standard.
