The Age article on racism and homophobia

The thing that shitted me about that article was that any message it was trying to get accross failed because it read like a sore losers attempt at a smokescreen for their team failing.

Also if it was that bad, and as a journalist, wouldn't you have just filmed it with your phone and accompanied the content with your article as proof??

I'm tipping the article was written last Wednesday in the event of a loss.

Bit of a potty mouth on her! Class.

I found this line to be plain wrong.

"For too long, it has been acceptable to exclude and marginalise female, racially diverse and LGBTQI fans."

I have never felt marginalised in all the years I have been following football nor did my mum or my grandmother  In what way are people in these groups excluded or marginalised?

Really don't follow her argument about the white guys predictions either.

This also made me laugh. Didn't most commentators tip Sydney? And even if they tipped Hawthorn, how is that racist or sexist?:confused::confused::confused::confused:

I stopped when it was Erin Riley. Swans fanatic and feminist. Neither of those are bad things but when it comes to Erin, she has trouble keeping those views out of her work. ever.

The system is in place to deal with this. If she has a problem with the response of a security office regarding a few morons, then she needs to take it up with the MCC. Nothing to do with Hawthorn the club.

Whilst I don't like the behavior, her article should have been aimed at the venue and security staff. I have a feeling she was riled by the booing of Goodes, which was nothing to do with race or gender but more to do with his usual dog acts during a game.

Goodes was booed because he hit (Shiels??) unfairly during a contest. He also has history with going feet first against Gibson. Connolly needs to do some research. How the f*ck do you get a job as a journalist these days. Surely they expect that you demonstrate some aspects of journalism to keep your job.

Even Dennis and Bruce were expecting a free kick for his attempted snipe on shiels

I tweeted her directly, but I'll repeat it here.
I wonder if she'd be okay with me posting a pic of a nice big pair of t1ts and mutually appreciating them?
Shes a fraud, she's sooking cause her team got smoked and her salty tears taste beautiful. What a train wreck!
Suck it up Princess, as CP said, this attention seeker has got her 15 minutes of fame she so craved.
But it does make me laugh, I saw 4 expert footballers giving an opinion, she saw 4 white men. And we are the racists?

I unapologetically boo Goodes. I boo him because he's a dirty player. I boo him because, as a dirty player, he's a protected species as the umpires seemingly swallow their whistles when it comes to penalising him. Case in point - he fair & square pushed Lake (from memory) in the back to shepherd through a Franklin goal during the grand final.

Brereton had the gumption to call him out for dropping the knees on Gibson a couple of years back and was dumped on from up on high by his colleagues as thanks.

I boo Franklin because he's a rat. I have no interest in forgiving him or forgetting what he did to this club of which I'm very proud. Once a rat, always a rat.

Please don't confirm her opinion by resorting to cheap shots at her
She has had her 15 minutes of fame - ignoring her is now the best reaction

Correct weight. She (and Connolly) have their own views about things and nothing that anyone could say will change their minds.

Unfortunately Fairfax Media is being infected by a number of opinion writers that have an agenda that they push at every opportunity. It's very sad that a once fine bastion of print journalism is resorting to trotting out opinion pieces by wannabe academics and pseudo-feminists to create click-bait and controversy in the finest traditions of News Corporation.

Did she report the alleged abuse to the authorities?

Anyone who watches their side get beaten by 10 goals in a grand final, then says the worst thing about their day, was the opposition supporters, isn't a true follower of Aussie football.

I don't condone personal abuse at the footy, and I wish our supporters would not participate in it, as it gets the Family Club a bad reputation. I want Hawthorn to continue to be synonymous with winning premierships, and not for player abuse.

Agreed, even as a leftie, my Age subscription is very very close to being canceled.
The funny thing is, it's Caro's articles on footy I've found the best this season. Her piece about our win was magic.
Report the news, don't try make it up. Leave that to the HUN.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but these types of articles or opinion pieces are what the industry calls click bait. It's a bit like a troll and gets the conversation going on a slow news day to keep generating traffic. Fairfax competing with BF and the HUN after the GF. It is nothing more than that.

Seems very level headed to me...o_O

Erin is entitled to feel how she feels, and I understand that football is for everyone. However there are 2 things I think she needs to look at -

1. If something offends me and I know of a place where I am likely to encounter that on a regular basis, rightly or wrongly, I would do one of two things. Go there and ignore it or go there with a view that if it happens I will make a stand. The last thing I would do, is go there expecting it would happen and then write about it afterwards. I would consider myself a whinger if I did that, and rightly so.

I honestly hate the way people can behave when they are drunk, normal everyday people can become blithering idiots. Guess where you won't find me on most Friday or Saturday nights?? that's right, the pub. Guess where you won't find me after the occasions where I have gone out with friends, because I choose to?? The floor of my room crying for 6 hours because of the behavior of the people I knew would be there. Prepare yourself for what your are facing and mitigate yours risks Erin.

2. If you feel so strongly about it and it makes you so upset that you cry for 6 hours, stop your whinging and do something about it. If security won't do anything and it truly is that disgusting and horrific that it upsets you so much it sends you to the depths of a 6 hour tear session. Call the police. They are there for a reason.

You say the AFL has to stand against this sort of thing? Where was your stand? Where was the stand of anyone who witnesses this at the time. Were you all too busy tweating about your misery and awaiting sympathy tweats back to actually do something? This is a very gutless way to deal with it and will result in no change whatsoever. All you have achieved is you have dragged the Hawthorn Football Club through the dirt, but I somehow think that may have been your underlining reason in the first place. You went to a footy match, you witnessed fairly normal football behavior and your team got thumped. Not a good day, I agree, but there has to be better ways to deal with it than crying yourself into an emotional stupor.

She claims that she did and that the MCG security people did nothing about it. Didn't mention texting the official anti-social behaviour number, though.
