God I hate the Olympics, boring as bat piss to watch and it disrupts my regular television watching.

Thank god for Fox8's Animation Domination thing they have on, or I'd go mad. To be fair, I like how they play Newstopia on SBS after the Olympics though:thumbsu:

3. Exists merely to divide an already fractured world population and maintain racial prejudices i.e. "lol look how hairy all the italians are! Look how the Croatians have massive heads! I heard all the female Aussie athletes rooted like 50 guys each!"

wow man, that's an incredibly cynical viewpoint to have; personally, i've never observed any of the said racial belittling.
"Croatians have massive heads!" - lol, wtf?

All I know is that for two weeks in September 2000 people were genuinely happy.

Locals and visitors were embracing each other and signing songs together.

People revelled in their country's wins, but that was secondary in the end.

People from all corners of the globe were enjoying themselves together, largely irrespective of race, religion or battle history.

I can't think of any other event in the world that has that sort of power.

The Olympics is much more than a simple collection of sporting events.

Try the World Cup. The interest and passion this event generates makes the olympics look like a yawnfest in comparison. It is truly deserving of the title of "The Greatest Show on Earth". But because countries like the usa and australia are not "football" nations this simple fact seems to confound and elude many of its citizens. lol

Wouldn't say the world cup unites people though - pretty fierce competition, especially when the English are involved

the floor routine is abit too flowery for me with the flowing ribbon and the bouncy ball but other events like the beam and the uneven bars you can enjoy like a circus routine..... pretty amazing some of the stuff they do really >,>

would rather go to the circus and see someone shot out of a cannon!

The olympics involve nearly every nation in the world - the world cup but a few handfuls.

Take it to the Olympics forum, buddy... This thread is for the hater's :p

Don't be a hater.

Love the olympics.

They need fresher sports in the olympics.

It couldn't hurt to trial some new ones, even ones that appeal to a younger audience - i.e. skateboarding and such.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the BMX bike competition start today?

 Well for a start, the World Cup does not unite people from all countries of the world.

Secondly, a national win does not come secondary to anything in that competition. It's simply a sporting competition.

 I think common sense has eluded you when you made this post, probably because you were so eager to reply with a hateful post about the Olympics to Hass.

why does age make such a difference?

is it just because they broke the letter of the law.... or is there some advantage from younger bodies?

I think the romanians had 18 yrs olds competing didn't they?

As I understand it, minimum age to compete is 16 at the opening ceremony. It's deemed that people under the age of 16 (like the age of 14) have additional flexibility that older competitors won't have, and that can make a difference in the gymnastic events.

I think it was brought in to protect young children who might not have been physically or emotionally prepared for what coaches were asking them to do.

If they are underage, you can't say they are the best in the world because technically it is the best in the world over 16. There might be superior American 15-year-olds who were unable to provide competition because they followed the rules.

Only four more days and it's over....

W00t!!!

And I haven´t seen a thing about the damn games except in this thread and what I´ve brifly scrolled past of The Age website... People make out like this is a major world event, well, maybe we get all obsessed about it in Australia but it seems to me the Colombian´s really don´t give two shits about it.... Bless their knitted socks!

Only four more days and it's over....

...and what a fantastic 4 days they will be.

If you have not watched them - you have really missed out.

I love how the UAE is passionate about them and have 0 medlas, the Indians are loving it 2 medals .....it is a wonderful time to bring people together.

Roll on 2012
