“Clubs are bracing for the commercial impact of delayed free-to-air AFL coverage on Saturdays from next year as Fox Footy holds exclusive live broadcast rights of the game nationally for the first eight rounds.

The deal means that supporters of teams playing anywhere in Australia on Saturday in the first eight rounds will need a Foxtel or Kayo subscription to watch them live, with free-to-air coverage on Seven to be delayed. Only the Anzac eve, Anzac Day and Dreamtime games will be shown live on free-to-air if they fall on a Saturday.
But for Victorian audiences, that arrangement lasts longer, and extends to the first 15 rounds before Seven can broadcast Saturday night games live. Seven has the rights to broadcast Thursday and Friday night matches, and Sunday afternoon games, and the overall number of free-to-air games broadcast will remain the same as they were under the previous agreement. Fox Footy will use dedicated commentary teams for each match.”

Who in their right mind takes a week off work for that?
Not sure, probably not many, but given the deal is centred around Tourism WA and they're planning flights packages for NM fans it seems that is the premise with which the WA government is parting with its taxpayers money.

Seems about as smart as tourism nsw investing in the a league.

I think there's two things here.

1. You're operating under the assumption, without proof, that it is dodgy behaviour. Or that the AFL's rules prevent these things. If so why last week was this 'ticked off'??

2. The precedent has already been set.

Adam Simpson took ownership of two Perth based HJ franchises. A West Coast Sponsor.

Luke Beveridge after winning 2016 flag. Also a sponsor.

On a more broad discussion you'd have to say the soft cap has been a failure. Brought in because big clubs spent money on their football programs with frivolous attention to how much was being spent. And the argument was that smaller clubs couldn't compete.

The soft cap is here, including a luxury tax, and the powerful clubs are still winning premierships and competing deep in finals while your St.k, NM, GCS types aren't getting close.
Very interesting. LOL.
