I'm not saying they don't lose athlete's to other sports but it's a cop out to use as a total excuse

It's a myth there is no talent pool it's a cluster**** of poor resources, bad administration & piss poor player development as much as anything.

Ireland appear to have the structure in place right now, much of that old guard from 2007 is gone now, but they're still competing even better than before. Problem is they lack a decent pathway (especially with the WC shrinking beyond this tournament), test status would give them that, as would if England ever got a decent domestic T20 competition off the ground.

Kenya were horrribly managed too, a short-sighted board really killed them. 2003 should've been a springboard for something better, but they didn't do enough (anything) to consolidate. Kenya are the cautionary tale for the teams like Ireland coming through at the moment.

If they have a decent structure underneath then definitely they should have a chance. The problem with Afghanistan is that they are never going to get to play international cricket in their own country. I think Pakistan will eventually get some games back, but no one will ever go to Afghanistan

There's always the UAE for their matches. Plus at this stage I reckon they'd take playing at a high level over not, even if it meant never playing at home.

They're a disgrace, don't deserve to make the quarters.

Throw KP in for that hack Ballance, rejig the order a little and you get this:

Bell
Buttler
Pietersen
Root
Taylor
Ali
Morgan
Woakes
Broad
Finn
Anderson

Stokes for Woakes would also be an upgrade, but it's the batting that needs more help right now.

Southee got some good assistance from the conditions, wouldn't be surrpised to see McCullum play the anchor role and let Guptill go at them from the outset, just in case an English bowler gets something going for them.

It won't really matter in this match as they're going to get trounced but they're side is a bowling option short.

This match Finn/Anderson/Broad/Woakes/Ali/Root.

I view Ali and Root as handy part timers, so if the quicks get carted then they are devoid of variety and options.

Personally I'd drop Ballance for either Stokes or Bopara, move Taylor back to where he belongs at 3 and see the side have a better balance.

Agree on them being a bowling option short, Root is ordinary. Disagree on Ali though, he's become a good all-rounder, but they're f***ed if him or the other 4 struggle.

Dropping Ballance for Stokes works from a team balance perspective, but it still makes the batting look ordinary. They'd kill for KP right now.
