Thinking about a midfield group with the two new signings, plus Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Jones, Morton, Bacjetic, Elliott... that's nine guys. As long as Klopp isn't running a preferred few into the ground (he should rotate heavily in the Europa League group stage), that should be plenty. I wouldn't mind a long term successor to Fabinho, but I'm not panicking about it.

Seeing some reports we are no longer chasing Thuram, but are all in Lavia. Don't think we were ever after both personally, as much as I hoped we would be able to land both, as both will improve the squads defensive side. It was going to be one or the other.

The fact Thiago might leave is interesting one, as we might have another non home grown player in sights (only one spot left at the moment). No other reason to move him on unless the owners said to cut the wages or to cash in now to recoup some of the transfer fees. But our midfield depth will be tested if we only have Hendo and Fab as experienced back ups. We have lost four experienced senior players, and brought in just two so far. Thiago will make it a fifth. We will not be winning if our depth is relying on Elliot and Jones even more, as we'd be one injury or transfer flop away from the same old issues. If Thiago goes, we definitely need to sign two mids, not just one.

Rather bring in players now, so they have a full year of adaptation in our team / the EPL ahead a potential CL return the season after, and the fact Fab and Hendo are close to the end. If both leave next year, our bench will be all Elliot, Jones, Morton, Baj.

Zero rumors on RB. But apparently we made a fresh bid on CB Schurrs.

You make a good point on a possible transfer flop. I think Mac and Szo are gonna be excellent but what if they arent, what if they flop or get injured all the time like Keita. If we have already moved Thiago on as well that really limits our midfield again.

We should keep Thiago and then bring in a DM like Lavia. That's three mids out in Keita, Milner and Ox and three mids in in Lavia, Szo and Mac.

Then our first team mids will be Hendo, Fab, Szo, Mac, Thiago and Lavia with our back up mids in Jones, Bajcetic and Elliott. That looks the right balance. Can send Morton on another loan.

I'd be happy to go into a season with this squad, seems to cover all basis, now it's up to Jurg and the boys to perform

Diaz/Jota Gakpo/Nunez Salah/Elliot

Mac/Thiago Lavia/Fabinho Szo/Jones

Robbo/Kos VVD/Matip Konate/Gomez Trent/Hendo

Beck/Adrian

Then the likes of Jones, Bajcetic and some kids like Doak and Gordon making up the numbers. Would also still love a left sided CB to come in on top of Mac, Szo and hopefully Lavia.

I always think you should have 6 experienced/good mids on the list minimum. I know Lavia is only 19, but he has played ahead of his years last season.

Having Mac, Szo, Lavia, Hendo, Fav, Thiago is a very good balance. Depth is super important as well, the lack of depth has destroyed us twice. In defence two years back, and then the midfield last season. Fab covers the middle, Hendo on the right, Thiago on the left. We can play with 3 of them, or 4 of them, depending on the formation. There is tons of game time still for the likes of Elliot to play, especially in the cup games.

I'm just worried if we go into this season or next with only Fab, Hendo, Mac, Szo and Lavia/Thuram. Then as already mentioned, we are only a long term injury away from having to play the youngsters more than we need to. I'd rather keep Thiago unless we go for a fourth mid.

Ok but still a bit too light on for me.

If we lose 1 of Henderson or Thiago I’d like to see 1 more midfielder come in.

Otherwise we’re 1-2 injuries away from having to field kids (Elliott/Lavia/Jones) in every game.
Are they talented and do we want to be giving them opportunities? Absolutely.
Are they up to being regular starters in a title winning midfield yet? Not for me.

Are we moving towards playing a back three and four in midfield?
I don't think we are. But I think we will run with the new system now and then depending on match ups. Feel with the new signings, and current links, I think we will have a bit more flexibility to switch if needed. Who and if, we sign anyone for the defence will be most telling. Still think we stay with our 4-3-3. Has served us well for most parts.

Thiago is probably the kind of guy that still wants to play at the top level as often as he can, so he ain't taking the retirement money yet

If someone like Barca or Inter or Juve came in for him I could see him wanting to play there. But those clubs won't be paying much for a 32 year old Thiago. Sounds like the Saudis are well into him but he isn't interested.

Guess we see what happenes with signings. Like you said I'm ok with Lavia joining and that's it if we were to sell Thiago. Don't forget we have Tyler Morton also coming into the squad this season battle hardened after playing DM at Blackburn in the championship. If Thiago stays that will mean Jones & Bajcetic will be the ones that get less game time.

Fab
Soz
Mac
Lavia
Hendo
Bajcetic
Jones
Morton

That's plenty in midfield. There is a bit of a question mark on Bajcetic at the moment, Jurg said his recuperation from serious injury is going to be long and won't be ready at the start of the season which means he misses out on pre season. He'll need to be eased in gradually.

Thiago has to stay. Even if we bring in Lavia and Thiago goes that more out than in in midfield which doesnt solve the problem at all.

That's four out in Thiago, Ox, Milner and Keita and just three in in Szo, Lavia and Mac.

Lavia is 19 if he were to come in. Younger than Elliott and Jones. It would leave us with four senior mids in Fab, Hendo, Mac and Szo and two of those are new signings and one is 22 and has never played in the PL before.

Then after that we'd be relying on kids again in Bajecetic, Lavia, Jones, Elliott and Morton. Any big injuries to the four senior lads and were in the shit again.

Thiago has to stay IMO.

I do agree with much of this. But there is availability to consider as well. Looking back the club should have probably accepted any offer for Keita / Ox last summer even if only 8-10m. Both played very little role and towards the end when it became clear they were done they barely played at all.

Id hate to see Thiago finish that way as a permacrock. It seems certain that he won't be getting a new contract so for me if we get a good offer for him and for the club we sell now.

Bad News Pearce says we have to sell one before we can buy another mid, welp time to talk s**t about FSG again

Probably more like FSG saw the rumours about a Saudi club wanting Thiago and they want the club to sell him now before he can leave for nothing next summer.

To be fair, Pearce also said we needed to sell to buy before getting Thiago two years ago and we ended up buying Thiago anyway without selling, so who knows

We have a home grown problem, Lavia is home grown, comes relatively cheap (compare to other HGs) and has loads of potential, would be crazy to not pursue it
