The saddest part of this fiasco is that the twitter nuffies will turn on Trent rather than FSG who let him and two other key players run down their contracts to the point where they can negotiate with other clubs.

With VVD and Mo I can see FSG fumbling the ball being the case. I don't know about that with Trent. I think Real Madrid have been in the back of his mind since Jude went there and once Jurgen left he might have decided to see how Slot works out before deciding his future.

A lot of people are jumping the gun, we'll see how things go first. Being old enough to remember when Stevie wanted Chelsea right after Istanbul, people filmed themselves in HD burning his shirt and shit, then he did a U turn the next day.

If they don't sign and leave then we can proceed with the pitchforking of FSG but for now it's still a wait and see
 
I'm trying to focus on the onfield as we likely won't experience such a dominant season like this again if this does in fact continue. The contract situation is a distraction to this heavenly start.

If the dream season eventuates and the players leave/FSG let them go then they're all fools.

I get it from his perspective, that's fine if he wants to play with his mate in a new country for a big club for more money.

I'm just saying how the fan base will see it. You cant claim to love the club and then leave. Not if you're a scouser. Not if it's your team. The fan base will turn on him.

I dont wish him ill will but his standing in Liverpool wont be that of a Gerrard. It will be more akin to that of Michael Owen and he will have to live with that for the rest of his life. If he's fine to do that, then good on him. It's his life.

You said Trent would be hated by the Liverpool fan base. I think there's a difference between not being revered as a Gerrard-esque hero and being out and out despised.

If we played Madrid there would be the usual tame heckling of him, but I doubt the vibe would be "you're dead to us and we're acting as if you were never with us".

This is a PL, CL winning player who helped us go deep in both comps a couple of other times. A heart and soul type with a team we could be proud of again.

Not all romances end happily ever after. You can be a bit heartbroken or jaded without being utterly toxic. I know that can be a bit much to expect from most supporters (in most sports) but they follow a game where almost nobody is a one club player anymore.

Im not saying thats how I feel I just know how it will most probably go for 95% of the fan base.

Remember Madrid are a bit of a rival to us as well. Twice they beat us in the CL final, there is bad blood there, particularly with the Ramos/Salah injury situation. Liverpool fans dont like Madrid.

It's not joining United or Everton or City. But as far as joining clubs outside of England, I think Madrid is the one that is really bad to go and join after the recent rivalry we have had with them.

Me personally if he were to leave it would hurt the feelings I have for him for sure. He'd go from revered to just another player really. It would also be difficult to root for him considering I dont really like Madrid and always hope they lose in La Liga and in the CL. So I wouldnt really be supporting him either.

I think 20 years down the line maybe the stance would soften like it has with McManaman, not with Owen because well... United.

But he will never be looked at in the same way fans look at say Gerrard for example.

Plenty of great players have left us and the fans still love them too, guys like Xabi Alonso for example but it's different circumstances. Circumstances matter. Alonso was almost pushed out the door, he didnt really want to leave at all. The whole Rafa/Gareth Barry, no money situation meant you can still look back on Xabi and love the bloke.

Circumstances again when you look at how the fan base still kinda loves Suarez, even though his exit was messy. We all knew he was simply too good for us at the time. We were a mess with a shit manager, shit squad, no money and he was the best player on the planet not named Ronaldo or Messi. He was going... there was little we could do about it. Plus he wasnt born in Liverpool, he wasnt a scouser.

Circumstances with Torres, the fan base has come back around on him but I think that's more out of pity than anything else. Cos it went so horribly for him after he left. If he had dominated and won everything and scored a ton of goals against us and Ballon D'Ors etc I think the fan base would be more bitter towards him. But he was so awful, we all felt sorry for him.

Circumstances matter... but Trents circumstances work against him. He's not under a shit manager and playing with a shit squad so the Suarez exit doesnt make sense, he's not being forced out, the Alonso exit is a no etc

He's playing at the best club in world football right now. Top of the PL, top of the CL and we are looking to challenge for all the top trophies for years to come. He's at his boyhood club which he says he loves. He will, if he signs a new deal be on a lot of money. There just seems to be no reason to leave. So if he does, the fans are gonna be like... wtf.

It's just how it will go.

I hope he stays of course, generational talent and a local lad.

A lot of this is simply you saying how it would affect you, which is fine, but it doesn't mean "it's just how it will go" (Trent being hated/despised). You're doing a lot of projecting there - yet still give a bunch of examples where Liverpool supporters didn't hate champions who left, and have flimsy reasoning for why this would be different.

I don't know your background with the city and local LFC supporters but many moons ago I lived there and I have gone to Anfield in the Klopp era. Your spiel doesn't fit with my interactions and understanding of the community.

There is room for a moderate stance where he won't have Gerrard adoration or "you're dead to us and we'll burn every memory we had of you" toxicity. That's the one that 95% of Liverpudlians and the global supporter base will take.

It doesn't mean he wouldn't be heckled when he plays against us, but that's just part of the game - and putting them off theirs.

Think you're way off there mate. Those reasons werent flimsy either.

I guess we find out if and when he leaves just how it will go with the supporter base. I think you'll find it will be closer to how I called it than you.

But let's just hope we dont have to find out.

I dont know Mr Meow like I know you, but if he has experience in the city of Liverpool and with it's inhabitants, Im inclined to think his viewpoints are valid.

My cousin lives in Liverpool and is a season ticket holder. I've also been to Anfield like 20 times and have spent plenty of time in the city and my cousin always sorts me tickets, by going to matches with my cousin, I have made a lot of match going local friends.

But I dont know Mr Meow and I assume neither of us actually live there. But as I said, I guess we will find out.

The thing is I don't need to be right on this and don't consider it a competition. It's not a situation to get petty over.

I've given you thoughts based on my own experiences and interactions, but of course nobody has a crystal ball. Hatred is a strong word and shouldn't be confused with disappointment.

The only real extremist I've seen on this issue has been you. A lot of people see grey instead of black and white. As they have with a bunch of players who've left.

Can you give examples of players leaving in a similar situation to TAA?

Scousers? Local lads?

Carragher and Gerrard stayed their entire career.

Owen left and was hated.

Fowler was forced out and is obviously still loved.

McManaman left and was hated for a loooong ass time.

I lived in Liverpool during the Rodgers area and was still close enough (Northern England) during the Klopp area.

It doesn't make me an expert by any means, but it is one reason for my opinion.

Every situation is unique and context matters.

Owen and McManaman left without giving us a PL or CL, let alone both. There was a lot more angst and uncertainty as far as where the club sat. That they ended up playing for another club just down the road in England didn't help.

10 combined CL/PLs over the past decade for Madrid makes them as attractive a club as ever to join. It was 7 and 5 respectively for Owen and McManaman, so they were still a huge club but their recent success has been even better.

Trent was with us the whole Klopp era, a huge part of us consistently mixing it up with some all time teams and winning every trophy there is to win. If he left us with a couple of PLs and a CL on top of the rest, it'd suck but he wouldn't be getting spat on and told to never come back.

But hey maybe your world view is just a lot more cynical than mine and doe-eyed optimists like me ought to know better.
