The Clock's Ticking on Gilchrist...

Gunnar mate, my point is, even though Gilly is averaging 30 with the bat, for a keeper batsmen that is more then handy, the fact is by Gilly's standard that is average.

My point is this - i dont think Haddin would average 50 with the bat in test cricket, yes he deserves his chance, but smashing a few at domestic one day cricket is different to coming out to the middle in tests.

So who is the better bet, Gilly averaging 30 but still playing a great knock every now and then and possibly winning the game for you, or Haddin averaging a consistent 30?

I ask you?

I think there is a real chance Haddin would average closer to 40 than 30.

That's a hypothetical and that's why I'm not calling for Gilly's head. The selectors would have to end Gilly's career in order to have a look at Haddin. That might be seen as an unacceptable risk.

I'm just saying that Gilly cannot be considered a guaranteed selection when there is a guy outside the side who stands a real chance of improving on Gilly's recent output.

A modern cricket side needs a performing batsman at #7. This concept of a keeper only needing to be handy with the bat went out with the new millenium. Gilly deserves a chance to rediscover his form but the reality is that a continuation of a string failures punctuated by the occasional decent score is not good enough to keep up with the better #7 batsmen. He could bat with all the flair of Richards and it doesn't matter if he's not posting the numbers.

you are obsessing over stats when they don't show the true picture...
I am obsessing over performance, which stats measure.

Does his average of 59 from 2001-03 show the "true picture" during that period? You can't embrace the good numbers but then dismiss the bad.

The stats don't lie - Gilly is scoring far fewer runs.

how many times since 2005 has gilchrist come in to "just throw the bat" like he did in Sydney?
I don't think he's been in that position any more regularly than he was in the first part of his career, so how do you explain the massive drop in output?

And he's had ample opportunities to play more sustained innings, but hasn't delivered.

Stop trying to explain away the fact that Gilly is not the batsman he once was. Everybody can see that's the case, but for some reason you refuse to accept it.

Gilly will have the job for as long as he wants it.

I agree mate, I would rather him anyday to Haddin. What is it with everyone these days that someone has a lean spell and everyone calls for their head.

Geez the whole team is having a shocker of a couple of tests. So I reckon give it a bit of time and he will bounce back...so will the whole team.

You only gotta look at the world cup final to see what Gilly can do....he was having a bit of a lean trot there as well and he pretty much won us the cup

:thumbsu:

The "lean spell" has lasted two-and-a-half years.

We're talking about Test cricket.

The World Cup is for ODIs.

(preface) I’m a massive Gilly fan and he’s been my favourite player of the last 10 years.

They just mentioned on the ABC that for the last 3 years, Gilchrist has averaged 30 with the bat and has dropped 5 catches in the last 3 tests. He’s missed at least two stumpings that I can remember too.

I don’t really have a problem with his batting, as 30 is still pretty respectable for a keeper (at least historically) and he’s always a chance to go bang and smash a quick 60-100. Plus the experience he brings to the team, etc…

However, given the retirements of Warne & McGrath, there’s going to be a lot less chances generated each fielding innings. Can Australia afford to play a guy behind the stumps who’s regularly grassing catches and missing stumpings? Particularly given any of the replacement keepers should conceivably be able to average at least 30?

Maybe they'd be better of as a team playing a much stronger keeper, who's not as good with the bat (given Australia's batting is still very strong). It the taking wickets that's the problem.

But the question is whether Haddin could fill that role more effectively.

And if you're going to emphasise Gilly's value as a keeper, then the dropped catches are even more damning.
no i dont think he could, gilly is still much better than haddin..

it's 1 dropped catch, time to get over it i think..

and personally, i dont think gilly is the problem, if we had a half decent bowling attack, then we wouldn't be searching for answers and excuses why were doing so shit?

sounds like that its convenient for you to blame gilly, after all he did drop 1 catch, that cost the grand total of 14 runs...

Based on what?

Haddin has been in outstanding form domestically.

This is dishonest and nobody will buy it.

There's been a handful of missed chances and his batting isn't what it used to be.

Why pretend that it's "1 dropped catch"?

Our batting has let us down more than our bowling so far this series. Look at what happened in Perth.

Pffffttt... get a grip.

Why is it "convenient"?

His batting has been ordinary since the 2005 Ashes and he's grassed several chances this summer.

Stop deflecting from what everyone else acknowledges.

good for him

how exactly is that dishonest?

as i said, i think you're trying to find an excuse for why our national team has started performing badly, and you see a grassed catch or two and jump on board

let me know if i'm wrong..

and i see that you probably have the same amount of bias for haddin as i do for tait, so i understand where you come from, but it's probably not gonna happen..

You're pretending that conjecture over Gilly's spot stems from "one dropped catch", when clearly there are more persistent question marks about his place in the side.

What suggests I'm looking for excuses?

How about you deal with what I've actually said instead of theorising about why I might be saying it?

I don't come from NSW and I have no state bias whatsoever. I grew up in Melbourne.

Haddin has been in outstanding form domestically. Period.

look buddy, i'm not looking to start a flame war on this

my opinion is that gilly shouldn't be dropped

yours is that perhaps he should

lets leave it at that..

Nobody's "flaming" anybody.

My opinion is that his performances no longer make him the guaranteed selection that many seem to think he is.

I've got a radical idea, why not allow Gilly and the Aussie selectors to determine when he retires? Good plan? I think it is.

I love the way some of these idiot journalists are going around calling for the retirements of certain players. Why don't we have the same standards for journalists? If they start writing more crap (as most of them do), then throw them in the bin and get new ones.

Shotgun Caro! (with gloves on of course)

Regardless, an average of 30 over 27 Tests is not acceptable for an Australian batsman.

27 Tests is not a lean period. It is a bloody long time. These days, most keepers average more than that, with the exception of no-hopers like Bangladesh.

I tend to agree. People were raving about his world record today but he has dropped some unbelievably bad catches and his batting isn't what it used to be. As good as he has been, perhaps an injection of new blood would help this team.
