The Cold

It was 2C when I went to bed after midnight. In contrast it was 49C in Las Vegas today - an all time high. I'll take the 2C.

My brother is flying up to Vegas from Phoenix today to say goodbye to an Aussie poker player he met a few years ago. The guy is flying back home to Perf on Thursday. Good thing he's not flying to Melbourne. Imagine 48C one day and 10C the next.

One Christmas back in the 80s I flew out of Melbourne when it was about 35. My plane stopped in Minneapolis where it was -22. I was sitting near the front and when they opened the door, I thought I would freeze to death.

Something similar happened in Feb 1997 when I flew back for my parents' 50th anniversary. It was about 40 when I left and about -15 when I got into Chicago. On the way back my plane was stuck in Chicago due to a snowstorm and I missed my connection at LAX for my trip to Melbourne. I had to leave a day later from LAX. I missed a day of school, but it was only a swimming carnival. I wasn't even missed until everyone got to Greensborough pool and no Mr Chicago1. That hurt.

My mum's from St John New Brunswick originally, she said she felt properly Australian when she complained about cold winters here.

I did -40 to +40 once. Couldn't stay outside for long.

I don't know if others have found this too, but I find you feel colder if you go to a place that normally has a warmer climate and you happen to visit in a cold spell.

For example, I have been in Ballarat in the middle of winter (sunny days, frosty nights) and to Kangaroo Island on a drizzly and windy day when the weather was turning from autumn to winter and it was obviously cold in both places. Yet another time, I went to the Gold Coast in spring and South East Queensland/Far Northern New South Wales had an unusual spell of cold, wet and windy weather for about three days. The maximum was about 13 degrees, the rain fell constantly and the wind chill in Surfers Paradise and other suburbs between the tall buildings made things seem even colder.

I was rugged up against the cold in a jumper and jeans on the day I went to Sea World, and even though the temperature would have been greater than I encountered in Ballarat or on Kangaroo Island, I for some reason felt much colder in this unseasonable weather on the Gold Coast. Needless to say I felt so sorry for the girls who were in the Waterski Wipeout show that day. I got to wear heavy clothes and sit out of the elements; the poor girls were out there in bikinis and their breath still visible in the late morning.

I'm over it.

I had my mini greenhouse weighed down by bricks and propped in by heavy garden chairs. I found it on its side in the backyard. Every seedling a write off.

It's bad here today in Melbourne. Bins all over the road and several of my small plants keep blowing over too.

(Melbourne) Hayfever is slowly going to ruin my life with this wind after a freezing cold winter.

Bring on Summer & Autumn. The rest of the year can GAGF.
