The idea that the Second Reich wanted to invade Australia is ludicrous, as stupid as suggesting Japan may have occupied Australia in WWII. We were fighting to keep Germany down, because they were better at making stuff than Great Britain. The poor old Ottomans got forced into the war literally at gun point, the Goeben was parked opposite the Topkapi when it happened. They didn't give a toss about Australia, its entirely likely the Sultan was unaware of our existence until we took part in the invasion.

If that is the case and you were born early 50's you would of been registered with the Department of Labour and National Service and been subjected to a ballot prior to Whitlam shit canning the scheme in 72, or were you abusing returned servicemen from Vietnam who's only reason for going there was being conscripted.

Was a great reason to have a big footy game and at the same time tie it in with a huge part of Aussie and Kiwi culture.

The Bay is many things but I somehow suspect it's not really the right forum for meaningful political discourse about the evolving nature of Australian patriotism and its incumbent jingoism and how its headed up by the Anzac traditions.
