The downfall of Fox Footy.

This is an ongoing debate between Hutchy and Damo on their Sounding Board podcast. Damo is dead against calling games off TV, Hutchy is ok with it. According to Hutchy, apparently "the talent" aren't keen to fly from Melbourne interstate to call games any more, because of the lost time in transit, time away from family, etc. e.g to fly to Perth they have to stay there for one or possibly two nights. Yes they used to do this pre COVID, but he reckons that COVID proved that games can be adequately called remotely on TV, so the commentators can't be arsed flying any more when they don't have to.

Yeah, I seem to recall Kingy also deflecting criticism about calling off monitors on First Crack. iirc had something to do with him being one of the judges of the Showdown medal.
I don't have a high opinion of Damo, especially after he defended the AFL when they sacked a journo for questioning the league, but I agree with him on this one. There is a night and day difference between calling from the ground and calling from the tv.
If the commentators don't want to fly there, then get ones that already base themselves interstate like Papalia. Would help with the lack of variety of commentators on Fox as well.

Tbh I rarely find it to be any great difference. Is that a knock on the pre covid version? Not sure. But rarely did commentators refer to stuff that couldn’t be seen on the screen anyway.
If they have extra monitors then great.

The hypocrisy of course is that journos like Barrett will be happy to write critiques on games and clubs without being there themselves.

Dennis Cometti was happy to travel here, there and everywhere across the country during the season for the best part of 30 years but didn't play the family card to get out of doing games at the venue.

different times. As they say, we're now living in "the new normal".

whatever the hell that means.

Let's be honest - Hutchy's angle is nothing to do with family at all but everything to do with his company saving money on airfares, accommodation, taxis etc. Trying to use the family card is rubbish.

He didn’t have a choice. Times are different. Like businesses that allow staff to work from home now. Maintains staff morale, reduces costs. I haven’t got an issue with it at all. As long as they are accurate in their call.

My sources tell me it is Russell and Healy that really are against travelling.

I mean I’d just **** Dwayne off… it’s a special position he has, give it to someone that wants to do what would be on the job description.

I did like hearing Hutchy now turning to wanting the commentators at the game. He made mention that the behind the scenes people are in Melbourne. I’m of the opinion that no one at all cares if a producer is in a studio in Melbourne or an OB van outside Carrara. The commentators should be a non negotiable.

That's the problem.

The inaccuracies in each game stand out.

e.g. for some stoopid reason, when there is a shot at goal, the director chooses a camera that doesn't allow the commentators any idea of depth by going in too tight. If the commentators do have a greater perception of the field than us punters believe, as David King claims, why do they get it wrong so often? Or are many seconds behind the play.

I call BS.

The other issue which might be a more personal bugbear, is the mixing of audio. Instead of blending in to the crowd effects, there is a distinct difference when the commentators are on separate channels. As I worked in radio/TV for many years, the mix sounds awful.

It also begs the question - if, again as has been claimed by FoxFooty commentators, that the monitors give the same perspective as being at the ground, why is $$$ spent having those commentators, plus all support staff broadcasting from grounds in Melbourne? i.e. studio cameras, microphones, lighting, makeup staff, wardrobe etc. Foxfooty are a bunch of tight-ar$e hypocrites.

We're talking commentators on high 6 figure salaries by the way - my sympathy for them is barely perceptible.

If they're not willing to travel, then relinquish them of their commentary duties once their contracts are finished.

Reeks of an entitlement mentality from those who are too comfortable in their positions.

Dwayne doesn't even want to travel from Geelong to Melbourne for his radio show.
It was really obvious on air last week when the end of a call cut out and he asked if they'd heard anything in the studio (in Melbourne).

If they are against travelling, fine. Base them in Melbourne only covering Victorian games. It surely isn't beyond the wit of Fox to have teams in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney.

Yea I’m sceptical of the extra cameras call too

How do people find Jordan Lewis?
