The 'Go Home 5' Post-Mortem

Time to close this thread - we've moved past these blokes, actually they've been left well behind by the new boys.

Totally agree with the sentiment, but I do think dlanod is right leaving it open. Keep all the talk about the 5 blokes who left in the one thread for those who want to.

Taylor, Gardiner, McStay, Cutler & Robertson > Polec, Longer, Yeo, Docherty & Karnezis
Can't believe how the club has turned a disaster into a potentially premiership winning masterstroke. Those who were involved with the drafting should be in the Lions HOF.

Nah, said it before, this discussion won't be over 'til each of them retires from the AFL. We can squeeze another 2 seasons out of this yet.

For those who would still prefer Polec over Dizzy, at the moment we are comparing a player who in his first year is excelling in a poor, mostly losing side, to a touted 'gun' in a strong side but has gone missing as soon as things have gotten a little tough. Really?

Polec is a pea-hearted seagull. Young Alex Sexton, the Springwood QLD lad that plays for the Suns kept Polec to 4 disposals yesterday. Taylor is a gun and plays with heart.

As is Gardiner.;)

How embarrassing, confusing a guy named Dizzy from the Geelong Falcons with a guy named Squizzy from the Geelong Falcons.

How does that even happen?! ;)

Oops my apologies. Getting my Dizzy and Squizzy from Brizzy mixed up. Yeah Gardiner goes alright too, a bit of old fashioned back man mongrel in that boy. Just had a Bugsy Malone flashback you bunch of gangstas. Both very solid young players who should serve you well for the next 10 years unlike those who left.

No issue, realised where the mix up lay straight away. I always forget if it's May or Day who is Sam, so there ya go.:D

Just my two cents, but I wouldn't trade someone like Polec for Gardiner; ever.

As has already been highlighted; Polec is a heartless down hill skier, whereas Gardiner has already demonstrated on many occasions that he plays with heart, courage and is prepared to still his head over the pill and the fact he is already doing it as an 18 year old against hardened AFL players speaks volumes.

If you ask me, Polec is no better that the Lonie twins or a Jordan McMahon or Jarrod Oakley-Nicholls and I'd honestly be surprised if Polec is still on an AFL list in the 3-4 years. By then Gardiner, will already be monstering and maiming opposition players still with another 10 odd years left in him.

I think some of us need to take the Lion s glasses off. People are saying Polec isn't a good player. He is actually a quality player who hasn't even hit his prime yet. He will probably be a 150-200 gamer the way he plays. I would absolutly love Polec on our list (the one that plays for Port not the Brissy one).
Our delivery into f50 is shit, Polec is a great deliverer going in.

I still don't like him but it doesn't change the fact that he will be a great player.

By avoiding contact?

I didn't think many were saying that at all. Sure Polec is a brilliant player in a top 4 side that doesn't require much accountability, but I think the main concern is that in a struggling, you can't afford to carry that type of player. Using Jarrod Oakley-Nicholls as an example, I reckon he very easily could still be playing had he wound up at a top four club, but he didn't and he struggled badly at Richmond. For whatever reason, I see similarities between the two.

I was being facetious.
The knock on Polec is that he doesn't work hard. Reportedly didn't work hard when he was up here, and turned up at Port in less than prime condition. Either didn't prepare or put in for time trialled runs. Has great skill and flash when his side is dominating and someone gives him the ball, but doesn't work very hard when he hasn't got the ball.
So, while my comment was a bit of a smart arse quip about his work ethic, let's just say I suspect he won't be worn out from excessive work loads.

EDIT: But hey, FWIW, I agree that it's too soon to tell what will be. Early signs make me more comfortable about having Dizzy on our list than Polecat.

That last bit has me very aroused :D

Not strictly on topic but taking Polec over Heppel in 2010 still hurts. I wonder if Heppel would have shipped off after two years as well?
I have a connection at gippsland power where heppell played tac footy, said he and heppell where bemused when lions went cold on him ( due to non existent injury) just before the draft, I asked this connection after polec left us would of heppell done the same, he said no way, said he was happy to play anywhere just a real relaxed kid ( as we have all since seen in the media)

He is what 21, iirc. He could easily learn it. And besides, he is an outside runner so it doesn't quite matter as much. l have seen him tackle players as well, so it's not like he is shirking the contest.
Not trying to be smart or anything, just pointing out that that is a funny thing to read about a professional footballer.
