I'm not 100% sure but I think the calories are lower in lower carb beer and I guess over a session, it adds up? But still, if you have a session, it's going to be bad regardless! For example, Carlton Draught has 30% higher calories per 100ml than Pure Blonde.

Not sure - but it wouldn't surprise me if there are at least incidental trace amounts in most.

Grains and starches used in gluten-free beer
Here’s a list of the prohibited grains and their derivatives that people with celiac disease should avoid:

  • Barley and barley malt

  • Malt, malt extract, malt flavoring, and malt vinegar

  • Rye

  • Wheat — including durum, semolina, kamut, and spelt
Beer made from gluten-free grains isn’t likely to match regular beer for taste and quality, but to someone facing a lifetime restriction from drinking beer, gluten-free beer is like manna from heaven — made without gluten, of course!

Sorghum, millet, and buckwheat are the three most common substitutions for glutenous grains used to brew beer, but here’s a more complete list of the grains and starches that are safe to consume:

  • Beans

  • Buckwheat

Buckwheat is an herb of the Buckwheat family Polygonaceae, and it has origins in central and western China. Its small beechnuts are milled, which separates the edible groats from their hulls. These groats are then roasted and used as a grain product.

  • Corn

  • Millet

Millet is a family of grasses and represents some of the oldest cultivated crops known to man. Millet seeds are harvested and used for food or feed; in this case, that food is beer! Millet has regularly been used for making beer in Africa, and it’s now one of the most widely used grains for brewing commercially made gluten-free beer.

  • Potato

  • Quinoa

  • Rice

  • Sorghum

Sorghum is a vigorous grass that tolerates dry weather and is commonly used as one of the ingredients in African beer.

  • Soybean

  • Tapioca
A list of gluten-free beers
Most brewers of gluten-free beer have formulated their products with 100 percent gluten-free ingredients and processes that ensure purity of product. But some filtering processes used by brewing companies render gluten undetectable in low-gluten beer; so unless a beer is totally gluten-free, people with celiac disease have no assurance that it’s completely safe. And because gluten-free is a health claim, current U.S. beer label regulations don’t allow the term gluten-free to appear on any beer sold in the United States. Buyer and imbiber beware!

pure blonde has gluten.. but 'low' gluten

Low Gluten. Although we make Pure Blonde with malted barley (which contains Gluten), our brewing process breaks down the Gluten. We have had Pure Blonde tested by professionals and the beer contains around 10 parts per million (10 PPM), which equates to 1mg per 100g.

id reckon loads are low gluten..

Gluten free tastes shit but there is actually a place for it I guess, because there are people that have a genuine (not imagined like some others) intolerance to it.

Low carb? Utterly pointless.
Yeah, my friend is celiac and has to drink gluten free. Basically means no yeast in the beer. There are some brands that are okay apparently.

further to Howard's post above coronas are also low in gluten
Corona's are the third worst beer on the planet. Tub's and VB hold the dubious honour of being inferior.

unbelievable! eth.. blasphemy..

ok, i'm going to tell it how it is.

There are plenty of great beers around, and I have sampled many

but I challenge anyone.. anyone! to find a better beer, ice cold, straight out of the spare fridge in the garage, to crack after you have mowed the lawn on a windy, dusty, hot, 35 degree summers day.. than a VB stubbie.

its not possible.

not talking sessions, not talking food matching - im talking pure refreshment.

Worst full strength beers I've had would be a close contest between Carlton Cold, Corrs, Brahma, Miller, Bud and Oettinger. Just appalling.

you know whats funny

they say a bad days fishing is better than a good days work

they say a bad days golf is better than a good day with the missus

they say even when pizza is bad, its still good

but a bad beer, is terrible - there's no redeeming it.

It is absolutely, definitely possible.

Who says bad pizza is still good? I suggest these people have never had a truely bad pizza.

Bad beer still gets you pissed, that's about as far as I can go with attempting to redeem it. If only having a quiet drink I'd certainly prefer to not drink at all than drink crap beer.

I'd throw West End Draught into the mix too.

and Royal Dutch Posthorn extra smooth, I got sucked in by the international beer served in 500ml tubes thing, it was a long carton to get through.

The more I think about this, the more I am coming up with. There really are some horrendous beers out there.

for a hard earned thirst....

Let me quantify...

I like beer, I like wheat beer, I like an ipa, I like the odd stout, I like sampling different local beers wherever I may roam

Every time and place has its accompanying beer. A perfect match.

When its hot, dry and dusty, and you have just busted your balls doing a menial task.. That is the time and place made for the ice cold VB.

they made the ads to match the moment, not the other way around :p

I've had some terrible pizza in my time!! in India we had one that was still raw dough - in Belize the cheese pizza was pretty much a circle of melted but ungratinted cheese.

I still say it was better than eating my greens.

Bad beer still gets you pissed yes, but the bad beer that makes your face scrunch up so bad because its so terrible? Id rather a coke.
