I watched Thief (1981) recently. Kinda like those films. I.thought it was quite good.
Gave this a spin, it was alright - I felt the ending was a bit dumb and contrived but oh well. Great score from Tangerine Dream.

In the same 70s-crime-kick vein, thoroughly enjoyed the original Taking of Pelham One Two Three (Walter Matthau and Ben Stiller's dad vs. the terrorists) and am halfway through and also enjoying Black Sunday (Robert Shaw vs. the terrorists).

I actually knew nothing of it until it popped up on Netflix the other night
Well that’s probably a good thing. I was worried it wouldn’t meet my expectations after everything I heard.

It was pretty good but felt a bit long. I didn't really find Pacino believable as Hoffa though. He seems to just play every role the same these days.
My only issue with the film was the scene where De Niro kicks the shit out of that store owner. Looked every bit of an 80 year old playing a 35 year old.

The end did drag slightly imo. Otherwise I bloody loved it. Looking at social media, this movie has really polarised folks, I obviously fall on the “it’s ****ing great” side. But I understand the gripes. It doesn’t have the big explosive scenes like goodfellas or casino. But it’s also a different film with a different tone.

I compare it with The Untouchables or even something like 1900. It’s an epic, with not every scene necessarily advancing the story. Certainly not for everyone.

Taking of Pelham is awesome. Across 110th St is another that comes to mind.

Where do you think my name came from?!

Some great movies I've seen recently;

Prisoners (2013)
Ex Machina (2014)
There Will Be Blood (2007)
There Will Be Blood is brilliant. I will watch that again and again.

Saw the final film that was supposed to round out Deadwood after they ended the series abruptly because of the Hollywood writers' strike. It was good, but the short form didn't do the narrative any favours. The abridged version of something that I wish they'd had the bollocks to bring back to television.
