Analysis the Josh Treacy effect

It is probably about getting the mixture of tall and small with available personal right.

Having said that the combination was already tested and back to the combination from our recent losses after Taberner went down. And we played better later. Strange and difficult to make logical conclusion from that.

Josh Treacy is the indirect reason we won now?
I feel like having 20+ inside 50s over the Swans and the fact they had no defender over 195cm may have played a factor but hey, if Treacy is the catalyst for some unintended consequences that causes us a win then I’m all for it.

Having more inside 50s is one of the effects of playing more talls. Less intercepts marks from defenders = more pressure on the opposition clearing the ball = more repeat entries.

Loved everything about Treacy's first few minutes of the game. Did not get the props from the commentators when he pressured leading to the kick out of bounds that led to Tabs goaling. They said it was pressure from Freo's small forwards. Treacy, the 'small' forward. Brilliant.

He bettered it earlier with that defensive spoil to save an almost certain goal. Love everything about this kid. When he starts clunking the ball i50 (which we know he can) he'll get the reward on the scoreboard as well.

Our structure clearly does look better with him in the forward line. I also thought Walters in the midfield let our other small forwards step up (eg Henry). Lobb turning into a beast helped a bit :) And the small forwards finally turning up with some pressure - who woulda thunk it? Hopefully it continues into the coming weeks, with or without Tabs.

To me the thing he brings is physical presence. He hits packs and seems like he relishes the physical side of the game.
He will grow as he becomes more accustomed to the AFL style of game.

That goal would have cleared the defenders on the line from nearly 60m out.

What a hoof!

He created the goal for Taberner, that snap from the boundary, but getting hands on the Sydney defender and rushing him. But he is only 18, there should be lots more growth to him and he looks like he could play like Jesse Hogan for us in time - the Jesse Hogan in our dreams, not the one we woke up next to.

The coyote Hogan?

His first goal not being in the top 10 moments of the round is a deadset robbery
100% - it was a belter. Best goal of the game and considering Buddy's legit ones, that's saying something.

Get ready for way more space inside 50; defenders can't leave him free around the arc given his kicking distance. Is going to be key to Lobb and Tabs getting one and ones. Very excited about his potential.

Plus he's got a bit of mongrel and is happy to let people know he's about - probably hurts now, but imagine in a few years? Hehe.

There was something in the press conference about the tweak to the set up of forwards.

What did you change broadly with your forward line?
We tried to play our talls a little bit skinnier to give us a contest short and a contest long. We tried to set up our forwards a little bit more to get in and crumb. I showed them a clip at half time where we were second guessing ourselves with our pressure and to trust that everyone behind you will do the work to cover the exits and get to work. We had 12 tackles inside 50 in the second half and it brought a bit of perceived pressure to Sydney by the end of the game. It set up our win our I thought.

What was his marking like as a junior? Its been average at AFL level so far, hoping that's nerves more than anything else.

I think it's just the pace of AFL and playing against bigger guys - doesn't think he has as much time as he does so he's snatching at them. He'll adjust soon (started on the weekend), and then they'll start sticking more as he grows in confidence. Going to be very useful once that happens.

tabs out this week. bigger role for treacy.

Also had a chat with dad about the cyclone. dad seems to think hes a bit like lockett (not as talented). I do see the resemblance, especially physically and in dads words they are both big boofers.

I overlayed a photo of Big Cohuna holding a Sherrin, over a pic of Pav holding a Sherrin, halved the opacity on Treacy's pic and matched the Sherrins size for size, then dragged Josh's hand over Pav's and they are exactly the same size.

So unless I'm mistaken, there's no reason he can't win 6 Doig's and 6 All-Australian's with those mits.
