no, its great that its not going to happen.

arbitrarily rotating is the worst idea of any, worse than just staying at the mcg. if we are arbitrarily rotating, 90% of the time neither team will be from the hosting state, and when it is it will be when it's at the mcg. literally noone but the stadium operators and neutrals will benefit. If we are going to take the step of moving the grand final from the mcg, whats the point of playing west coast vs adelaide at the gabba for no reason other than some brisbane locals might want to go?

there are only 2 options:
1 - Remain at the mcg, because its the biggest stadium (im not going to say best because everyone is simply going to argue theirs is the best), with the tradition of having hosted the grand final for decades, in the second most populous state/city in the country and home to half of the competition and more than half of the members/money.
2 - Move it to the state whose team won the home ground advantage by being the highest rating team.

Again, arbitrarily moving it around the country benefits noone but the money makers in that state and the neutral fans, in which case what is the point of moving it from the g.

Because it provides a boost to the game in that state that no other event could.

Hard for you to understand I know, but having seen it first hand, i'm more adamant than ever before the AFL ****ed up like it never has before by extending the MCG contract to kingdom come.

So the AFL owns a stadium that nobody likes and placate a bunch of entitled campaigners from the MCC and make a bit of dough off the AFL Reserve? Seems fair.

This is what the AFL is getting in return " In April 2018 the AFL and Victorian Government announced that the stadium and broader precinct would soon undergo a $225 million redevelopment. Though the seating capacity of the stadium is expected to remain unchanged, the redevelopment will upgrade stadium infrastructure, connect the precinct to the Melbourne CBD and open up access to the Docklands waterfront. The works will commence in 2021 and conclude in 2023"

So this money isn't even in cash. It is just polishing a turd. Complete farce.
Why do you keep spouting that blatant mistruth?

The contract was all about the Souther Stand and link to Richmond/Tennis centre upgrade.

Come 2030 or so when the Southern Stand is 35 years old, the MCC then has enough guaranteed content to borrow the billion dollars that is needed to rebuild it.

The Vic state government won't pay for the MCG upgrade, the 250k MCC members will. Those 60k fans who pay $750 per year and never even bother to attend an event.

Was nothing stopping SA fans being an MCC member when the Crows entered, they would be full members by now.

How many MCC members would drop off if the Grand Final was only played there every 2 or 3 years, or on merit.? Answer: None.

Most major sporting events are rotated around to different cities/countries. Its what grows the game and creates new opportunities. Imagine if the World Cup was in England every year, and you never got to experience one in South America or Italy or Japan. Imagine the Olympics in Greece every year, or USA, and never in another country.

I mean, they've even moved the bloody Americas Cup to different countries. A competition that was hosted and won by the New York Yacht Club for over a century.

I’ve been arguing for two years now that it would be stupid to play away from the MCG long term. Why would you want to the grand final away from a stadium that is not only the biggest stadium in the country, but also probably the stadium that is the most fair in terms of home ground advantage.

MCG has what? 6-7 teams that host home games there plus it hosts every other non MCG team there at least once or twice during the year. How could you look at the Gabba or Optus or Adelaide Oval and say that those stadiums are more equal playing grounds.

The main reason you would have the GF at the MCG is commercial, nothing to do with fairness.

Fairness (reward a team for finishing highest, and integrity fairness for the supposed national competition) dictates the GF should be rotated around the capitals.

It doesn't matter what everyone thinks, because there is a rock solid contract for the next 30 years or whatever it is.

There was a previously an idiotic "rock solid" agreement for the MCG to host at least 1 preliminary a year, regardless of which teams made it. Things change.

you'd be happy to pay $500ish for the cheapest ticket to make up for the lost revenue, while people attending the mcg still only pay $200ish?

These were the 2019 MCG GF ticket prices.

Not sure where you get $200 from. What do the free loaders in the MCC and AFL Reserve Pay?

The Perth GF Game sold out immediately

These were the prices https://www.afl.com.au/tickets/grand-final

Gilligan basically said the money made from the GF ticket sales (which I believe all goes to the AFL) were pretty comparible. Amazing huh?

Get rid of the freeloaders and see what happens. The Deal is a ****ing Sham.

its always the mcg or umpires...always has been...always need something to blame
It’s not a blame issue it’s the fact that it’s a national competition, still have it at the G every second year, even travel every third year.

Of course it's a sham. Its always been about the Victorian economic benefit from having the AFL.

Sure they changed the name from VFL. But the whole point of the AFL was to finance the ailing VFL.

Sure growth of the game was an objective. But it was mainly growth of the finances to benefit Victoria. Simple.

Dude, we just had the most 2 neutral grand finals in history.
I can buy the capacity argument (although I think that's a little over exaggerated given the MCC members reserve and that certain stadiums would probably be built larger on the promise of a grand final every few years), but the fairness argument is a complete crock of shit. If you look back at the history of AFL grand finals, most years there's a huge advantage to 1 team because it's at the MCG. It's probably the most unfair place to hold it if you're aiming at neutrality.

Hoorah, someone gets it finally.

you bringing up the world cup is proof you either dont understand the world cup, didnt comprehend what i was saying, or just straight out didnt read past my first line. pick one.
The World Cup is rotated around. You'll say "arbitrarily" is proof I don't understand your point. I'll say appointing hosts based on who has the biggest money bags is pretty arbitrary.

It's a stupid analogy, the world cup, is a tournament for every team in the world to qualify, it's not a local comp.
