Nat Fyfe breaks his silence on Lyon sacking

Ross Lyon’s sacking would have happened a fortnight ago if the Dockers hadn’t upset then ladder-leaders Geelong, according to Glen Jakovich.
And the West Coast legend has endorsed former teammate Peter Sumich for the vacant Fremantle coaching role, saying his experience in understanding what makes the new generation of young players tick will be pivotal.
The Dockers announced the exits of Lyon and chief executive Steve Rosich on Tuesday, three days after the loss to Essendon that mathematically ended their slim finals hopes.
JOHNSON SAYS SUMICH COULD UNITE DOCKERS
WHY LONGMUIR IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR FREO
But speaking on 96FM this morning, Jakovich said the bombshell move would have happened sooner had Freo not stunned Geelong in Round 20 to remain just a win and percentage out of the top eight.
“My understanding is this process started three or four weeks ago,” Jakovich said.
“Because they knew the writing was on the wall. They were just waiting for the right time.

“I believe it was going to happen after the Geelong game, and then they got up and had that famous victory. So then they were still mathematically a chance to play finals.
“These things are all about timing. So after last week, against Essendon, with all the hype and media about Michael Walters’ 150th, Hayden Ballantyne’s retirement game and Aaron Sandilands’ retirement game... if you couldn’t get up and have a performance against a side that lost by 104 points the week before, there’s grave signs about what’s going on in the inner sanctum of the playing group. It’s just not working.”

Sumich is considered close to level pegging with Collingwood assistant and former Docker Justin Longmuir as favourites to become Fremantle’s full-time coach from next season.
Jakovich, who played alongside Sumich for seven seasons, said it was time for his former premiership teammate to get his opportunity to show what he could do in a lead role.
“The most experienced person on the table right now for them, and the most rounded-off guy with all the attributes and all the assets - it’s Peter Sumich,” Jakovich said.
“He took a little bit of time out and coached the Under-18s, and I think that was really pivotal for him understanding the development of the generation coming in, (which) is completely different to the Generation Y of 10 years ago.
“So he’s immersed himself with 16/17/18-year-olds and seen what makes them tick.
“I think he’s ready because he understands the next generation of players.”
I just threw up in my mouth.

If Sumich is best then he should get it. But certainly not because some of his best mates endorse him.
I think for the west coast job, he missed out because Simpson's interview was better.
Could be the same this time, who knows

TBH I don't think there's much wrong with what he's saying here. It's painfully obvious that the board were waiting for Freo to be mathematically out of the finals before they acted and I think that would have been the case after the Saints game at least (assuming they lost to both Geelong and Saints).

And of course he's going to back in Sumich. I don't want him coaching us but ffs if we're going to jump down the throat of every media person who back in Sumich to coach then this is going to become a very depressing thread. Whether we like it or not, Sumich is extremely popular with alot of the WA media.

West Coast legend Glen Jakovich says West Coast legend Peter Sumich is perfect for the Fremantle job. Why would anyone who lives in Perth be surprised by that? I'm sure West Coast legend Karl Langdon will be on the wagon as well, or maybe he's in favour of West Coast legend John Worsfold.

These guys have always been such supporters of our club, so I'm sure their advice is in our best interest, not the best interest of their mates.

Fyfe's frustration is a classic case of a bunch of sav blanc sipping suits in the ivory tower making a decision based solely on dollars.

Totally ignoring a club champion at the coalface...
Didn't even consult the Captain....
WTF
very poor
And a slap in the face to the heart and sole of our club.
Fyfy was wrong when he said nobody is bigger than the club, there is one person as big as the club and it's Fyfe himself
What a media beat up again in the West, wonder how many captains and senior leaders were consulted before we sacked Harvey and before Matlhouse, Richardson, Bolton, Scott, etc were given the boot

What good does it do them to talk up a guy to get a position only to have him do a really shit job? Makes them look like idiots then.

They will lose nothing if the club they hate becomes weaker.
It wont be Sumich that would be the problem, it would be the board, or Bell, or someone.

So the guy with coaching ambitions for the past 15 years, who's applied and lost two other positions will be willingly set up by his mates to fail at his only chance to forge a senior coaching career, purely as a gotcha to Freo.

Look guys I don't want Sumich anywhere near the club as much as anyone else here (I hated the way that he conducted himself after falling out with Lyon), but honestly pughing that narrative does not look good on us as a group of fans.

Why don't you make up some more bs? He said he is committed to his job (as Captain), he's committed to Fremantle (that includes everyone and everything). Your just stirring for no point.
Sorry, stirring the pot for no reason? He is stirring the pot for his amusement. Some people just have a sad life.

Sick of seeing all the wasted millions paying out sacked coaches. Whoever our next coach is, I think they should be "on probation" maybe a 1 year deal on about $1mil - and only extended if we go deep into finals, otherwise they get the boot, just like Ross. I don't see why we as fans should tolerate going further backwards and more years of mediocrity just so our new coach can settle in.

This is more a reflection on the media buffoons than Sumich, but it's a classic win-win for them. If Sumich comes in and does a good job they can say "see, all it needed was a good West Coast man in charge". If he comes in and does a crap job, it will be the toxic Freo culture, the board, the players - and a weak Fremantle is definitely grist for the WA media pack.

Not suggesting that Sumich wouldn't try, but would he be as invested as someone who is actually a Fremantle DOCKERS person, not just an ex-Eagles player who lived in Fremantle? Sumich had a chance to become a "real" Dockers person when he was at the club and all indications were that he was not heavily invested then, why would that change now? Had he been prepared to work with the team he would now be in a perfect position to take over.

Kick the dog when it's down. Very unAustralian west coast supporters. Fyfe looks pissed.. but fyfe has to take a bit of responsibility for the fractured team. I dont think the majority of players were on the lyon train.

Another baseless opinion.

You the fans have spoken and we have listened...

When the hell were we canvassed on our opinion? I respect what Dale has done in the business world and at our club but if this is based on member/fan/media pressure then we are stuffed. This message was the first time I was angry with this whole situation. We are going to have updates in the coming few weeks? Surely the search takes longer than a couple or few weeks?

I like the way Dale handled the media - but don't like the mixed messaging. Even in this clip he states we will make Optus a fortress next year... finals or bust or is it young and developing. It would be nice to have one clear message.

"The fans" in this context means the vocal majority. Clearly not everyone is represented there.

And do you think the messaging has been clear?

If we are going to be run by the vocal majority we are permanently stuffed. One of the things that made us professional was decision making based on all the information, not fan pressure.

sounds like they borrowed Shorten's PR team after he got rolled..."but we were told that's what everyone wanted"

Nek minut - "we listened to the supporters and decided to hire West Coast Legend Suma but for some reason we cannot determine, our 'fortress' has tumbleweeds rolling through it? Why, oh Why?!?"

I think the messaging is intentionally obfuscated and potentially misleading.

Agree on your second point. The amount of people that believe something doesn't tell you how true it is.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they zoomed that video out and he's sitting down with a blanket on his lap.
