Nat Fyfe breaks his silence on Lyon sacking

Ross Lyon’s sacking would have happened a fortnight ago if the Dockers hadn’t upset then ladder-leaders Geelong, according to Glen Jakovich.
And the West Coast legend has endorsed former teammate Peter Sumich for the vacant Fremantle coaching role, saying his experience in understanding what makes the new generation of young players tick will be pivotal.
The Dockers announced the exits of Lyon and chief executive Steve Rosich on Tuesday, three days after the loss to Essendon that mathematically ended their slim finals hopes.

WHY LONGMUIR IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR FREO
But speaking on 96FM this morning, Jakovich said the bombshell move would have happened sooner had Freo not stunned Geelong in Round 20 to remain just a win and percentage out of the top eight.
“My understanding is this process started three or four weeks ago,” Jakovich said.
“Because they knew the writing was on the wall. They were just waiting for the right time.

“I believe it was going to happen after the Geelong game, and then they got up and had that famous victory. So then they were still mathematically a chance to play finals.
“These things are all about timing. So after last week, against Essendon, with all the hype and media about Michael Walters’ 150th, Hayden Ballantyne’s retirement game and Aaron Sandilands’ retirement game... if you couldn’t get up and have a performance against a side that lost by 104 points the week before, there’s grave signs about what’s going on in the inner sanctum of the playing group. It’s just not working.”
Sumich is considered close to level pegging with Collingwood assistant and former Docker Justin Longmuir as favourites to become Fremantle’s full-time coach from next season.
Jakovich, who played alongside Sumich for seven seasons, said it was time for his former premiership teammate to get his opportunity to show what he could do in a lead role.
“The most experienced person on the table right now for them, and the most rounded-off guy with all the attributes and all the assets - it’s Peter Sumich,” Jakovich said.
“He took a little bit of time out and coached the Under-18s, and I think that was really pivotal for him understanding the development of the generation coming in, (which) is completely different to the Generation Y of 10 years ago.
“So he’s immersed himself with 16/17/18-year-olds and seen what makes them tick.
“I think he’s ready because he understands the next generation of players.”
