Ross Lyon has bid farewell to the Fremantle Dockers and possibly his coaching career at a packed press conference at a suburban football ground.
Dressed casually as he spoke for the first time since his shock sacking this morning, Lyon says he disagrees with the club’s decision but understands and respects why they cut ties with him this morning.
Lyon revealed he wanted to see out his contract next year.
But once it became clear that the board didn’t want him in 2021, it was difficult for them to continue backing him.
Lyon believed Fremantle’s best football this season was as good as most teams.
“I would have liked to have finished next year,” he said.
“When we’ve had our best available, we’ve beaten six of the top eight. We beat Geelong with eight of our best 16 out.
“That’s why I probably don’t agree with the decision but I certainly respect the decision.”
Lyon paid tribute to the players and club, and predicted the Dockers would enjoy success.
But he said he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to coach again.
Lyon has coached more than 300 games since joining St Kilda in 2007. He led the Saints to grand finals in 2009 and 2010 before moving to Fremantle and taking the club to the 2013 grand final.
St Kilda are yet to appoint a coach to replace Alan Richardson but there are no other vacancies.
Lyon said he had already enrolled to study Behaviour Economics at Harvard University before today’s decision.
Having previously raised questions about his own desire to continue beyond 2020, Lyon admitted he needed time to think about his future given his young family who were “rattled” by today’s decision.
“It’s not something I’ve thought about,” Lyon said of coaching again.
“I’ve loved the ride. I see it as (playing) three grand finals. We had opportunities in three and got smacked in the replay.
“I just want to keep growing. It’s a short ride and we’re not here forever.
“If I keep improving, I’ve got something to offer somewhere. But I need to gather myself.”

If anyone could post Duffield's article today, I'd appreciate it (Mark Duffield: How the Dockers came to double Ross Lyon-Steve Rosich sacking decision). He's the only journo I respect over there. I'd like to read his insight. Cheers!

Article is posted in one of the other threads. This is Mark Duffield this morning on SEN’s Whateley program and he discusses the opinions expressed in his article from about 5 minutes into the below podcast.

Really enjoyed that. Mark Duffield is the only respectable journo in WA.

On this, Blight on SEN was filthy that the media was running Kersten's "lol" story, said it's disgusting how 1 player out of many hundreds of players coached by Ross, can talk rubbish and the media have a field day.

I don’t care how anyone feels about Ross, but the front page of the West today was disgusting.

Definitely a cheap shot and says a lot more about the paper than it does Ross Lyon

It’s just a gutter tabloid paper now. No wonder no one buys the paper anymore

That anyone buys it at all is one of life’s mysteries

Yep. Way too nasty and personal. Ross had been at the club for nearly a decade and that’s what he gets? If we trash everyone who goes out the door we end up trashing every aspect of our club history. I think it was time to move on, but the West was in poor taste.

What did they say?Nothing would surprise me

I thought Ross's press conference at the oval was handled with great dignity

Thanks for getting us to the big dance Rossy, not sure Ill live long enough to see us get the big prize though

I’d argue they do. Longmuir is ready and a perfect fit.

Freo can take time with the process and let him assist coaching Collingwood in the finals. Good experience for a coach.
If their eye is on Longmuir then it does make more sense. There is a fair bit of upheaval in the coaching ranks and while some positions have been (hastily) filled there could be more vacancies.

I do like his background and agree that the finals experience will be valuable.

I’m sure Belly has Longmuirs number in his iPhone being ex teammates & would have thought some dialogue would have started weeks ago, if not months.
I just hope they go through the full process & interview everyone, including sounding out Brett Ratten, who as a senior coach has positive win/loss ratio & been to 3 finals series.
Not to mention has since been at Hawthorn under the best.

If Ratten has an offer on the table from St Kilda he will be under pressure to accept it. They don't have to wait until finals are decided and could move on him early. If I was them I would. And looking at how Lyon has been treated here by the media, if I was Ratten, that's they way I would go.

Of course, but from a Fremantle perspective they must talk to everyone not currently contracted to coach. If nothing else it will help Ratten get the gig at the Saints, which I would love.
In regards to Lyons treatment by the WA media, he only has himself to blame, as much as they are ****en hopeless in WA, you’ve got to play them correctly. They hate him as much as he hates them & this is the result.
As immature as that is, it is fact.

Interesting interview with Crowley, cited 'people management' as a weakness area - what does that refer to?

He described players who weren't giving their all as copping it the worst from Lyon, is that what he's referring to?
