We will play the lowest ranked winner from the Elimination finals on Tues or Wed next week away from home. 2nd leg will be on either Sat or Sun at AAMI

Why away, and since when? That is bizarre. This league is appalling.
Firstly playing 27 games, but also interrupting the season for ACL. Why not play each team twice, and that is it...?Way too long a season with the meagre lists and depth each team has.
Now this.
Anyway, I am probably alone with these opinions.

It'd be amazing to complete the back-to-back double, but really, as long as Victory don't win the toilet seat it's all good. That'd be - what - one major men's trophy for them in seven years (FFA cup is really a tier below)?

They used to laugh at us but now we're starting to bridge the silverware gap and they don't like it - at all. It's great!

No for sure the only reason they extend the season is to make money on more Derby matches.

I am trying not to judge this new finals system until I see it in action. But yes we will play the lowest ranked team after taking a break for the first week of finals. Then a mid week away game to that team, then a weekend home match.

Then hopefully grand final the next week.

If we win week 1 finals, are we not straight into a GF?

League brought in 2 leg semi this season, we (a-league) need to play X amount of games in the season to be included into the ACL.

But I kinda agree play everyone 3 times and have 'first past the post' I think it's Aust culture to have a finals series

1st and 2nd don't play first week.

3rd plays 6th.
4th plays 5th.

Then we play the lowest rank winner of those matches. In a home and away two match aggregate score style.

Then if we win that we are in the grand final. Would be shit if Wellington make it and we have to travel to New Zealand...

Don't think it'll be in NZ, but I could ( and most likely) wrong

I just wish they had a different name for some kind of Aussie knockout comp rather than finals. Like the Carabao cup in England.

This is really weird.
Have to play a team twice to make the GF?
What if it is a 1-1 draw with zero GD
Extra time, penalties etc??
I wonder what inspired this ridiculopathy?

I would assume ET and then pens.

What inspired this?? I'm thinking $$$$$

I guess so. Unless they bring in the "away goals" rule like in the champions league. The team that has scored more goals away is declared the winner.

All I know is that we need a break and thankfully this new finals format has given us that!

No 'away goals'

1-1, 0-0 still is 1-1

It's a new finals format. For the past 8 or so seasons it's been one off elimination games.

When the league first started they used to have 1 v 2 play each other over 2 legs, winner hosts the GF and loser to the prelim where they would meet the winner of 3v6 / 4v5.

Pretty much meant that the GF teams would play 3 times in 4 weeks if 1 and 2 made the GF.

I reckon they were thinking about getting more content out of better finals matchups. If you're going to play 2 legs be I'd do it in the GF. Each team hosts, big crowds etc.

Adelaide away Wednesday
Adelaide AAMI Sunday avo.
Massive challenge, they are in great form, 6 straight wins, and MC has not beaten them this season.

Adelaide is a great chance to square up on late goals, red cards, and post Covid recovery.

2 draws and a loss, all games we lead in and if we can avoid the shenanigans in the last 30 minutes then should be well placed.

Hopefully we've enjoyed a 9 day break, and got the recovery in. Berenguer might even be a chance to return at some point.

Both semis should be tight matchups, compelling watching.

Agreed.
Top 4 teams again are top 4.

If we can get away with at least a draw in the away game I will be quietly confident for Sunday. I feel the 3-1 scorecard didn't represent the match against CCM. They had lots of chances.

Should be a good couple of games! I just keep reminding myself no team has done both premiers and champions back to back before.

Different season now. No interruptions to get us to OS.
Hence, we can possibly look forward to beating 2 of these 3 teams that we have not yet been able to beat this season.

Adelaide will play us for the full 180 minutes - no team has rescued or won points more than them in the last 10 minutes. They concede plenty of goals, but often chase teams down.

How much do you ride your luck in a season? Sometimes it pays off and other times you get burnt (like the Glory game).

Been spoken about it a fair bit throughout the season ...

Against the other sides in the top 4 0 W 5 D 4 L.

We went 14 W 2 D 1 L for 44 of our 49 point s against the other 8 teams 😱

Let's see how things play out over the next few weeks....
