Even Bay 13 trolls who claimed to have bought sympathy memberships in 07-08 (full of crap, the vast majority of them) aren't trying to push that line this year.

Im sure in 07-08 there plenty of sympathy memberships purchased. Im refering to the 500 or so purchased yesterday apparently.

the membership tent was reasonably busy at about 6.20pm last Sat night as I strolled by, at least 20 ppl were in the process of signing up, or about to.

Sadly a sign most likely that we are again getting pity memberships or relying on current members paying for extras.

More realistically, the total from Friday and the weekend rolled in together?

No outsiders are getting pity memberships with North this year, Melbourne got all that would have been going. And if current members are still paying for extras - even PDR going nuts - that is still reasonably representative of a base level, as they'd be people who are prepared to do the same thing for a number of years until or unless it's no longer necessary. Nothing "sad" about it.

What really shits me is some of the more lazy 'experts' in the media, buy into that crap.

I think by now the pity members have gone and we are being given a more realistic look at how many real members we have.

Mike Sheahan said last night on "On the Couch" that he, Gerard and Dwayne Russell purchased North memberships this year. Mike said he purchased it on principle because he wants North to stay in the competition. Gerard could have, but didn't, correct him.

James Hird said "well I certainly didn't purchase one" or something like that.

I have an idea to generate interest in North for next year

For soccer Foxtel (our TV home) run a program called Football Superstar (or something to that affect) where a whole bunch of kids try out and periodically get booted off with the winner getting a gig on an A league list.
I say that we lobby the AFL for an extra listed player a "special rookie" if you like.

We get to short list those who were not picked up over the drafts and they will compete for this single spot on the list. As a club we get to run the selection process. Previous and Current players and coaching staff to be involved. It would showcase our facilities every week, and build the profile of our club.

It has the ability to get non Footy minded people on board. It could even have follow up episodes when teh selected kid starts training/playing.

I would rather we made a stand against f-wits like Healy and Derwayne and publicly refused their membership money until they stop the baseless hating of the club on 3AW and during games.

The worst part is they all had a go at the crowd and commented that "more members need to turn up"......what's the bet that Derwayne scanned his press pass into the game instead of his North membership?

I thought Jason Dunstall was very positive throughout the commentary last week, and while there were some glimmers of positive comments by Gerard (our play made it hard for him in the first three quarters), on the whole you could see how difficult it was for him, especially on camera where he had fake 'waiter's smile'. Never a genuinely enthusiastic comment from him about our club. It's usually prompted by another commentator and usually qualified or tempered. I'd rather he hand in his membership and start talking us up a bit when we deserve it, as many more members will sign up if we get a (deserved) positive vibe in the media.

Agreed. I don't mind Sheahan, but I feel like taking an extra shower when I hear that Healy and Russell are member of MY club.

This is embarasing! I'm sick of North being the club with low supporters/ members. I dont know how many people that go on tihs forum arn't members but those that are out there need to buy a membership! No excuses. Even if you can;t make many game you still have to support your club no matter what and this is what is killing us! I see lots of North Meloburne Supporters where I work and always the first thing I aks them is, are you a member. Quite a few of them say yes but a lot of the time you get an answer of no. How do these people call themselves supporters? Because they go to the occasional 1 in every 5 games and then watch the rest on TV. Its pitiful and I am sick of people that make fun of me supporting this club and make fun of the ammount of members we have. The worst thing is that even when we were winning flags and in the finals every year in the 90's and early 00's we still couldnt get many. The only time that the membership picked up was when we were getting sympathy support. People that don;t even follow our a club i.e Brett Lee etc were buying memberships just to help support the club. and the worst thing for me is my cousin. She was a diehard North Melbourne supporter when she was young, and she was the one that got me into following them. My uncle and I try to get her to buy a membership and she always strays away. I just hope that we can get her 18 month year old baby to follow em, atm the moment its a toss up between going for his mums team nth melb or his fathers team carlton.

Put your cousin on troo roo for life, with her details and then she'll get the letter each year saying if you want to continue being a member, do nothing otherwise call us etc..she'll probably just let it go and stay on board.

But I agree, being the lowest year in year out does get a bit tiresome, but at the moment that's the way it is. Makes it more important than ever for every single person to keep the support going and turn up to games.
