great post SOS

i remember reading about the jim mcIll contract. hideous

If you saw Sonicsgate, you might remember that they called McIlvaine's contract the 'Original Sin' for setting events in motion that indirectly contributed to Seattle's eventual demise 12 years later.

With regards to the original discussion re. Melo, I will genuinely curious to see whether this becomes a 'thing' in the league in the coming years or not. The cap for next year is supposed to be significantly increased ($63 mil?), so the luxury tax threshold will inevitably increase too.

I'm not altogether confident that the trend of 'sacrificing $$$ in search of glory' will catch on, but stranger things have happened.

Sorry, but you ain't winning shit with Melo.

Dude is a great offensive player, he can do just about everything: inside, outside, post-up, drives...but face it, unless you're building around a super-duperstar and have an "insert appropriate 'winning culture' related catchphrase here", then you ain't got shit to look forward to in the NBA.

You know who wins titles in the NBA? LeBron, Duncan, Kobe, Olajuwon, Shaq...

Guess what? As good as Melo is he ain't leading your team to a title. Pay him $80 million a year, $25m a year...heck, get him to take a paycut an play for $10m a year...shit doesn't matter in the end.

He isn't that kind of transcendant star.

And we all know the Knicks are a basketcase of a franchise...a royal clusterf*ck of an organisation. What is Phil Jackson? A saviour? F*ck no...he's another overpaid James Dolan acquisition, a PR move to paper over the cracks within the franchise.

So how does the rest of the Melo-era Knicks play out? They'll suck for another season, they'll revamp the roster and have some decent playoff runs. But ultimately they'll fall short as long as Melo remains the centrepiece. He doesn't have the will, the commitment, the demeanour to lead a team to the title...yeah, keep tapping your head when you make a 3 Melo, keep prancing around the Garden like the man, the big fish in the big pond...keep getting them checks.

Yes, Melo will get paid...whether at full price or a slight discount, it doesn't matter in the end...the team will be stuck in purgatory. That's the reality, not the false hope that leads Knicks fans to continue lining Dolan's pockets by rocking up to games at exorbitant prices or paying to watch the Knicks on Cablevision.

Dolan gets his millions, so it's not the end of the world if the Knicks win the Championship or not (Just like he has his blues band - he enjoys being being its central figure...ultimately he doesn't care if it their songs don't reach #1).

So yeah, the NBA cycle will go on, we'll see big name superstars continue to celebrate NBA titles...can you envision Melo in a Knicks jersey, lifting that Larry O'Brien trophy ahead of the likes of LeBron, KD, Anthony Davis, Chris Paul, "next superstar everyone hopes to luck out and draft"?

Let me answer that question for you: F*ck no.

Melo isn't in that category, regardless of whatever comes out of his mouth about "pay cuts" or "winning".

The Knicks ain't going nowhere in the near future and their fans will continue to suffer on the illusion that their franchise will turn things around...and depending on how much personal investment they put into "rooting for laundry", these fans will either laugh or cry (or possibly both).

And don't think New York is alone in all of this...It's the sad reality of being just another superstar-less, poorly-run franchise the NBA.

As the seasons go on, we'll all support our teams with fervent enthusiasm, hoping one day that our team will win the whole enchilada. And though there's a good chance that our team won't be the one hoisting that trophy, we'll be back again the next season and the season after that, barracking for our teams yet again, all because we love following this sport.

And uh, you might want to check out Snoop Dogg's Instagram message on the matter.

Not exactly kid friendly, and/or MLK inspired but ah quite direct.

Lol snoop...

“A message to the muthaf*cka that own the Clippers,” Snoop Dogg says in his post. “You bitch-ass, redneck, white-bred, chicken shit muthaf*cka: **** you, your momma and everything connected to you you racist piece of shit. **** you."

Tommy Sotamayor would probably agree with Sterling and he's as dark as the night.

I'm not Vietnamese ;)
It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast your awareness of Vietnamese people...Do you have to?

You can sleep with Vietnamese people, you can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on BigFooty...and not to bring them to BigFooty threads (and the same goes for Magic Johnson too).

Listening to that rambling phone conversation, it strikes me that Sterling has more than a few screws loose.

He doesn't want to be associated with either black or Hispanic 'minorities', and yet he keeps a mistress 60 years his junior who happens to be a member of both of those groups...

He doesn't want to be associated with African Americans, yet he owns a (now) high-profile team in the NBA - a sport and a league that has always been heavily associated with African American fans and culture, not to mention that the majority of the players, stars or otherwise, are .... you know... African American...

Hmmmm, what do psychologists say about the most vociferous homo-phobes being subconsciously gay-curious?

If she's bringin back ghetto ratchet hair hats with her its understandable he's not happy.

Yeah, it's all a bit too weird and convoluted for me to try and unravel what's going on in his head.

At some point or another these racist viewpoints must have entered his mind, developed, and now they're so deeply embedded that he sees no problem in delusionally manipulating these views for his own personal benefit.

Kinda like how Knicks fans delusionally believe they can win a title with Melo...wait, sorry, didn't mean to say that...I'm just having flashbacks from my pointless Knicks rant from yesterday.

Agree, cognitive dissonance par excellence.

Says a lot about the 2014 Knicks that they can drive even non-supporters over the edge ;)

The outrage is funny. Plenty of Black African Americans people would agree with Sterling.
