Re: The one's that hurt....

What about the ones that hurt (that arrived to the club)........

Just to start off........

David Loats

David Haynes

Brent Grgic

Gary Ayres

Re: The one's that hurt....

James Byrne.

Yeah, he was only VFL listed but I loved watching him play. Every cliche you can think of, he fulfilled - bled for the jumper, lead from the front, everything. I remember the '06 Grand Final, didn't stop trying all day and was the only reason we were competitive. Was stoked that he captained such an awesome side to the flag in '07, and screamed my lungs out when he did the lap of honour in '08. You'd like to think that some of his attitude rubbed off on some of the young guys he played with - Varcoe, Lonergan, Djerrkura, Hogan, Stokes....

Re: The one's that hurt....

Other than Murphy :p. Traitor Colbert was the one that really stung. l thought he was the right kind of bloke to carry the club for 10-12 years and usher in a new era...Used to love the courage with which he played.

Did 'The President' Lindner leave us for Adelaide or did we move him on? Gee that bloke could play, you never see him mentioned much anywhere even on here...Super super talent.

Going to find it hard watching Mumford for the next ten years but that wont be as bad as watching someone else a bit further North if that happens...

Could seriously play, and could seriously go missing.

On that basis, he was the prototypical Geelong player from that era.

Re: The one's that hurt....

Adrian Hickmont was the one that really hurt me. It looked a bizarre decision at the time and it cost us. Tough, skilful and red hair!

Re: The one's that hurt....

What is the story with Carrazzo?

On our rookie list and played well for us in the VFL.

We helped him get to Carlton because we didn't have room for him.

Re: The one's that hurt....

I am not doubting Mumford's having a good season, but I dont think it puts us in that bad situation.
Blake has improved signficantly this year as a ruckman, and the point is Otto is still around.
Alongside this Hawkins approach to the ruck one could label as very similar to Mumford's - esp in what are the good aspects of each players efforts.
I also think the media were always going pumps Mumford's tyres if he did well up there, and a guy that size is always going to look a lot more imposing on the tiny SCG.

But not for much longer. Mumford would have been a great replacement for Otto when he retires. But that's life, we move on, and hopefully one of our other ruckmen comes through after Otto retires.

Re: The one's that hurt....

Past---Hickmott+++, Williams+++, Toohey+++, Bolton+, Colbert+,

Current---SCOTT THOMPSON. I think he's underrated and a very exciting defender, and one that North can base their defence around. We don't have a weakness in that area but I was really peeved we didn't go for him when he was clearly a standout defender playing before our eyes every week.

Mumford doesn't worry me that much as he tired late last year, Blake was a superior tap ruckman, and Hawkins' strengths in the ruck are what Mummy does anyway.

I agree....Pods was a pretty good leaders replacement for him, but now we're in the big time, I'm sure the kids miss him too.

Speaking of ones that hurt, every spud key forward we tried to get (or every spud we got and tried to turn into a key forward).
Spinks, Baldwin, Grgic, Loats, Haynes (although he was kinda ok), and to be fair White was ruined by injury, but I remember when I thought the great McCarthy was going to be great! If only Pods was around back then, we could've skipped that whole era!

True, but we need to remember who we did draft. From memory North took him with their 3rd pick, which means as premiers we'd only had 2 to that point. One of those was on Harry Taylor, so it's not like we blundered away our first pick.

I'm quite sure Geelong would have taken Thompson eventually, but North got in first. Can't do much about that.

Re: The one's that hurt....

So we've gone 40 odd posts without a mention of one player, Ben Graham.

I wasn't devastated or anything when he left but in hindsight I'm sure he would have been handy in the Nick Davis game against the Swans. Would have contributed more than Gardiner or Playfair anyway. He was 30 when he left for the US, so had a season or two left.

Re: The one's that hurt....

Colbert for me, given that he was...you know...our f**king captain and all. Hindsight means jack s**t. With every other player I'm old enough to remember that has been mentioned (and Ablett, if he goes), I've been sorry to see them go, but for the most part have been able to understand the decision. But with Colbert, I felt betrayed. That was probably the club's lowest ebb since I've been following footy (definitely off-field) and our skipper just walks out. Devastating...

^ This! Spot on mate! :thumbsu:

Colbert is a dog

Ablett Snr's premature first retirement. I was hungover and unable to move when a friend burst into the room raised the blinds and let me know the news. I would have sobbed had I not been so dehydrated.

Like a few others said; Colbert really stung. I know there are reasons but all I saw was a bloke leaving us at our lowest point to chase a premiership with the reigning champs. I like North but while he was playing for them I was praying with all I had that they wouldn't win anything especially when they kept getting close. Happy for them to win again now! (preferably during our next rebuild!)

Ben Graham. I really believed we needed him to get over the line and was pretty disappointed when he left , turns out I was wrong!

I was interstate (as I am again now) during the Colbert thing, but didn't Bomber and Moons come across from North, and we got Cory Enright all as part of the deal?

Re Mumford, we got Mitch Duncan for him, and young Motlop for Prismall, both of which are sound future investments IMO.
