The whole town of Northcliffe is under full evacuation so the town could be wiped of the map before interstate help gets here.

That's tragic - if my history serves me right, it isn't the first time the town has been lost to a bushfire

Far out!!! That's terrible news!! Oh those poor people!
I've been down to Pemberton- a beautiful town- and imagine Northcliffe to be similar. If a fire goes through there, there would be nothing left but ashes :(

Poor kid- and poor you :(

You just have to trust that the driving instructor's instincts of self-preservation kick in- there should be no way they would endanger their own lives nor, by extension, that of our kids, just to give them a driving lesson.

Apparently most houses in Perth (maybe elsewhere as well- but I don't know about that) don't have enough downpipes. Obviously that would be a once in generation storm and, as such, is something that most houses aren't built to withstand, but we've had to put in extra gutter drainage in all of the houses we've lived in because of the water coming back in under the eaves and running down the wall inside bedrooms and lounge room, etc. Perth receives about 850mm of rain per year- and a lot of that rain falls in quite a short period of time. Most of the guttering in modern houses just isn't built to carry that amount of water. I see that there are slotted gutters being added to houses nowadays- hopefully that alleviates the problem.

It's actually 733.5mm.

Thanks for that :) Thought the newspapers quoted annual average as higher. :( My bad!

Oops- apparently it depends on where you are. Kalamunda has 1000mm, Fremantle 760mm-ish and Jandakot/Perth 830-850mm. That's something I never knew. :)

Perth used to get 850mm about 20-25 years ago so it was an accurate representation during that time. Now, not so much. The average since 1994 is 733.5mm which is a sign of how the climate has changed and how much hotter and drier this part of Australia is getting. I think the south west corner of WA is getting drier and hotter quicker than most of the other parts of Australia.

Jandakot is 823mm while Fremantle is around 764.6mm although that station shut more than 25 years ago. Kalamunda is 1063.3mm although that site shut 22 years ago also.

I hadn't realised they were old measuring stations- that's a huge drop off from 850 to 733mm, though. Is there a similar cycle like that through our history of recording measurements? ie periods of more then less rainfall?
I'm a number-lover. Love to see those stats and am always looking at climate stats (not that I remember what I've read, though :( That's one of the downfalls of old age )

aaaand we're back, it really has been bizarre how consistently the lightning storms have been so on and off recently, if that even makes sense. Like 10 hour intervals or so?

I'm sitting overlooking the city (pretty distant) and it's pretty spectacular viewing though. Also seems like there's a bit in the southern suburbs too.

god damn... it's like a disco outside in Ellenbrook

The thunder is incredibly loud. House is shaking and the lightning is flashing non stop

Not even an exaggeration either, crazy stuff. My cat's eyes are wide open and she's absolutely stricken with panic. Always thought dogs were more sensitive to that.

ok, I'm powering down... just saw a lighting strike land about 5 metres from our house!

I legitimately felt a zap through my laptop
