Brayshaw wasn't as good as in previous weeks but again worked hard throughout the game both ways and was a consistent contributor.

Cerra's laser to walters... which walters dropped...

Apeness through another game, showing he could be a very strong contributor next year and through the next 6-8 years.

Bennell played well at Peel and played mid. We could see him for up to four games this year.

Amazing kick.

That could have been a game changer.

We talking Darcy? Yeah he played 4 quarters at Peel. He's ready to come in imo. Only if we didn't have Apeness to help him out would I hesitate. Both can ruck, both are quite good at winning their own clearances, both can tackle properly, both can take contested marks, and both can kick goals. Not expecting miracles on the weekend (mainly because both don't have 100% endurance levels atm) but excited about getting a glimpse into the future.

Neale and Walters - two major senior players - worked their butts off, just it didn't quite come off for them - Walters in particular looked really rusty (3 weeks off will do that)

If Neale and Walters were a bit more polished the whole team's confidence may have lifted. Too positive?

IDK it's hard to gauge what to make of that result. Next few weeks will see how it sits in the grand scheme of things as to whether it's a blip or not and the bye had a much bigger impact than previously thought (look at Geelong's records post bye)

Yeah this time last year didn’t think it was likely that we’d ever see Ape and Darcy pull on the purple together. Feels like they could be a formidable team moving forward, and Apes overhead marking has improved out of sight recently.

I note Ross has recently stated that Ape is more ruck than Forward but a combo where it’s someth like Darcy 60/40 ruck/Forward and Ape 60/40 Forward/ruck seems like has real potential.

Tipped us for 8-10 wins this season. Still think we will make it.

Getting more games into the young fella’s than I expected.

I think the rebuild is on track. Possibly even slightly ahead of expectations.

If we had kept our cool we would have had wins north and the eagles.

Sunday confirmed to me that Apeness has a long way to go to be a ruck. Hopefully lesson learned and we will focus on Darcy and Jones there.

His first game as an AFL No 1 ruck after 4 years of injury and never having completed a preseason! Realistically he could not be anywhere other than building his endurance and craft.

As Lyon said in his post game:

" It’s really an opportunity for Michael Apeness, you just saw Stefan Martin a very very good mobile ruckman. He had his trials and tribulations at Melbourne as a young ruckman, went to Brisbane and has learnt how to train hard consistently, compete and build that durability. So that’s instant feedback to Michael to feel what it’s like to come up against and that’s what he needs to build to. You’re not going to build to that after six games after two PCLs and an ACL but we’re aiming that down the track he can deliver that type of performance."

Despite all of this, he was among our best.

And yet Jones got a game in the ruck where both Strat and Meeks haven’t. Jones also did better than Apeness as a ruck.
Strat was playing in the ressies a few weeks ago as Meeks is now. If they were really better than Jones it would be him in the ressies.

I still like Apeness in the team. But playing 60%+ in the forward line where I agree with you, he is better than Jones. But you just had to look at the first bounce against the Lions and you knew there was no winning the ruck. It was a comprehensive thrashing.

A blind man could see the reason why Jones gets a look in over those boys is because he is significantly more physically developed.

Look at his Peel stats though, they are underwhelming TSTL. I admit I haven't watched Peel at all this year but I assume he isn't playing the best 8 possession game each week. To be fair to him he has to share a lot of the ruck duties but still the other guys seem to do better.

Also, playing ressies is not a rating thing, it is an opportunity. The blokes playing ressies gets 80 ruck contests a game. The 3 rucks at Peel get 10-40 each. Very hard to develop as a ruck sitting in the forward line 80% of the game.

Jones is struggling against Wafl opponents.

You all could well be right and I may need to eat some humble pie if Jones plays in the ressies.

But no matter how you toss the dice Jones has been picked, also been the emergency. You also can’t argue that playing in the ressies is what happens to those that are surplus to requirements. No matter the spin. Nads and Meeks have both been there. Jones has not.
Granted our selection committee makes some selections I don’t understand but it gets its way and they pick Jones to play both AFL and Senior WAFL.
I’m just pointing out that your money is better on Jones getting another game this season than either Meeks or Strat getting a call up.

What the actual ****? Yeah you can argue it and I think it is daft to think anything else in our situation.

I think Jones is much more likely to get a call up, but I am also sure he is not better at rucking than either Nads or Meek.

cough back on track thanks guys!

And something positive: 33 degrees, light wind, and no rain for our game tomorrow. At least the weather's cheering for Freo. It's going to be hard for the Melbourne guys after the shitty cold rainy weather we've been having here for the last 200 years.

Melbourne has 4 seasons in a day but we've just had a whole season in a week. Thank god winter is over, but I don't think either team will be relishing the conditions in the NT.
