Happy Australia Day to everyone. I know there's all sorts of controversy attached to enjoying it nowadays, but I reckon that a bunch of families coming from all over the world and believing in all manner of different things from the crowd next to them, and all being able to a have a barbecue on some of the world's best beaches, is quite a cool thing. So, for that alone...
Have a good one. Cheers.👍🍻

Ah the annual day where people and corporations pretend like they don't enjoy the colonization of this country. If they were going to keep it real, they'd be handing over their assets to the Aboriginals. No one will.

But it's fun to pretend like you care.
It’s not about not celebrating this country, it’s about not celebrating it on a date that is painful for a lot of Australians.

Australia Day should be a day for everyone, and it’s pretty clear that this date isn’t that. I have no idea/don’t care what the date should be, but it would be nice to have a day of celebration rather than a day mixed with all different emotions.

Hang up immediately. You will be shocked at what I've found on the dark web.

That's a very strong statement from the club.
Australia day is an odd holiday from a lot of POVs.

First off it celebrates the founding of NSW (and Sydney) Do we actually want to celebrate that? If you are an actual Victorian then is a **** no.

Lets have a proper day for this nation not a day of british flogs making NSW

All I care about is if those companies pay their taxes.

Companies are not people and are not our allies and the people running them will sell us out for a pittance.

Never trust corporations who have to answer to shareholders.

We make it the 27th of Jan, what actually changes?

Have a friday as reconciliation day then a monday as a "australia day"

One of the biggest issues (for me) about changing the date is the sheer fact that as it stands a late Jan holiday makes sense for our kind of start for the school year and the work year.

We need a new day cause **** celebrating the founding of NSW but we do we need a long weekend around this time.

Well it wouldn’t mark the day that began the colonization of our country which signifies the beginning of all the atrocities aboriginals went through. If Jan 26th is meant to be a celebration, what are the Aboriginal communities celebrating with regard to that day?

There’s nothing wrong with celebrating the country we have now but also acknowledging how ****ed up part of our history is aswell.

Would you not celebrate Australia Day if it was on a different day?

Announcement:

I renounce Veganism for my new Breatharian diet.

I expect the new diet to last 42 days approximately and to be extremely successful.

Except for the single, and quite dire, side effect.

It marked the beginning of a lot of things, Not just the negative.

Hope this ok to say. Just an opinion on Australia Day.

Not often I get political even though I couldn’t stand the lanky hunchback and still can’t but it is time to change Australia Day to another date. This isn’t because I’m over the top for the indigenous people or others who want it changed but the day has been destroyed. It used to be a great day for nearly everyone to celebrate but now nearly everyone under 30 wants it changed so they now aren’t part of it.

Yes many over 30 probably don’t want it changed but think about it. The day is now a nothing date. Sport maybe played but no one recognises it as Australia Day. You can’t even get a group of friends around with discussing or arguing about it If the date is changed I’d say in less than 5 years no one will give a stuff about the 26th. All it will do is make many more people happier and we can go back to calling cricket the Australia Day game as well as others sports and activities without many being embarrassed about it.

Yep I’ve had a few and coming from a right to middle winger this maybe unusual but I want the thrill of being and celebrating being an Aussie back again. Just change the date. Please

I’m curious, do you think right wing leaning people are more opposed to changing the date?

Absolutely. It shouldn’t be about politics though. It should be about getting back to a date that we come together as aussies and proudly say I went to the tennis on Australia Day or played cricket on Australia Day or had a piss up with all my mates without worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings

Agreed, at the moment those who don't want it changed are just sounding like whingers who want to fight for no real reason, so just get it done and we can all move on.

That is the deepest contribution from you that I think I have ever read.
You should drink more. 😜
I agree totally.
We cannot have a day of National Celebration without the support from everyone in the community.

If I drank more I wouldn’t be contributing. I’d be joining my dad with our ashes scattered at Caulfield racecourse. Would have been Moorabbin but unfortunately weren’t allowed which I understand.

I don't see the issue with changing the date. Ambivalence is our national personality trait and in truth the great days of football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars are a relic of a long gone era.
So just change the bloody date. Caring about it is un-Australian.

But it's a time honoured tradition going all the way back to 1994 when we unified the various state public holidays to celebrate the founding of the NSW prison colony to dump crims in spot that they couldn't swim back from before school goes back. 1988 was when we decided that we needed an Aussie version of the Fourth of July. We had this weird patriotic thing after we won the America's cup -which was a boat race no-one had ever heard of before and Alan Bond was our favourite Aussie because he owned a shit brewery and seemed like a he might have been a big factor in the yacht racing shit before we realised he stole everything that wasn't tied down.

Paul Hogan was an international star and Americans though we were a novelty so in a moment of feeling good about ourselves we decided to make ourselves more like the US and do blind patriotism. It's taken a long time to bring in a meaningful day where Coles can sell us some cheap Aussie flag printed shit that was made in China so that we can wear it with pride and get drunk in a public place like our invasive forefathers would have wanted. It's up there with Halloween and National Hotdog Day as or most important traditions. Don't change it just because Aboriginals want to be all woke.

Good on you Plugger, I remember arguing with you years ago about you wanting to keep it so that's a pretty open minded point of view. Most people knuckle down and don't change their opinions. At the end of the day Australia is a great country because we mostly all get along no matter where we are from. If it unifies us again just move the day. I doubt anyone really gives a shit as long as we get a day off still and the weather is good. Aussies don't take shit too seriously anyway. I doubt anyone really gives any shits if it moves.

Yeh I have yet to hear a decent argument as to why the day should remain as it is, it’s always some stupid ‘woke’ culture war analogy because having empathy these days automatically makes you woke.
