Good on you Plugger, I remember arguing with you years ago about you wanting to keep it so that's a pretty open minded point of view. Most people knuckle down and don't change their opinions. At the end of the day Australia is a great country because we mostly all get along no matter where we are from. If it unifies us again just move the day. I doubt anyone really gives a s**t as long as we get a day off still and the weather is good. Aussies don't take s**t too seriously anyway. I doubt anyone really gives any shits if it moves.
I think my problem back a few years ago is I had no indigenous friends and the only one one indigenous person I knew was Nick Winmar when he lived with us. He didn’t help my attitude to the day because even though he was indigenous he was city indigenous and wasn’t really caring to much about his previous culture. I still have no indigenous friends but I do have a 27 year old left wing daughter who has changed my mind about the date. Triple j changed her mind. She still can’t get me to call a girl they though. I always think people are talking about at least 2 people.

Absolutely. It shouldn’t be about politics though. It should be about getting back to a date that we come together as aussies and proudly say I went to the tennis on Australia Day or played cricket on Australia Day or had a piss up with all my mates without worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings
The same people protesting the date will simply become the same people protesting the day. They don’t want Australia Day to be a celebration, no matter what day it is.

That could be true but unless it’s changed we will never know. And if they always protest on Australia Day well so be it. It won’t wreck the other day. That day we can all celebrate together. If they do protest on that day they will quickly lose support and just be known as a pack of whingers

If China invaded us and made us celebrate the day of them taking over, most Aussies would crack the shits too. They weren't even classed as citizens and states had the right to make their own laws in regards to their lives. Only got the right to vote in 1962. I would be a raging psycho if I was indigenous.

This shit was still in our constitution last time the Saints won a premiership.

51. The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws for the peace, order, and good government of the Commonwealth with respect to:-
...(xxvi) The people of any race, other than the aboriginal people in any State, for whom it is necessary to make special laws.

127. In reckoning the numbers of the people of the Commonwealth, or of a State or other part of the Commonwealth, aboriginal natives should not be counted.

And we had to have a referendum to even change that.

That is nothing but conjecture. The protests are centred around an ‘invasion day’, which specifically references the 26th of January.
To aboriginals, changing the date means we acknowledge the significance of Jan 26th for them.
Changing the date for everyone else just means we get a holiday on a different day.

Just make it a week and be done with it.

1 day for invasion and protests.
1 day to impound people who protested a tad too hard.
1 day to celebrate.
1 day for recovery of celebration for those that went too hard.
1 day for A-Z to happen.

There's your work week summed up, take a week, everyone is fine.

Reconciliation month could work for me.

But it's a time honoured tradition going all the way back to 1994 when we unified the various state public holidays to celebrate the founding of the NSW prison colony to dump crims in spot that they couldn't swim back from before school goes back. 1988 was when we decided that we needed an Aussie version of the Fourth of July. We had this weird patriotic thing after we won the America's cup -which was a boat race no-one had ever heard of before and Alan Bond was our favourite Aussie because he owned a s**t brewery and seemed like a he might have been a big factor in the yacht racing s**t before we realised he stole everything that wasn't tied down.

Paul Hogan was an international star and Americans though we were a novelty so in a moment of feeling good about ourselves we decided to make ourselves more like the US and do blind patriotism. It's taken a long time to bring in a meaningful day where Coles can sell us some cheap Aussie flag printed s**t that was made in China so that we can wear it with pride and get drunk in a public place like our invasive forefathers would have wanted. It's up there with Halloween and National Hotdog Day as or most important traditions. Don't change it just because Aboriginals want to be all woke.

People keep saying that, but it was always a thing well before the dates were unified.
For example, Australia Day Honors were introduced under Whitlam.

There are some interesting Poll results on the wikipedia page.

Seems a bit pathetic that the IPA one is so different to the other, kind of confirming that its Conservatives who "don't" want to change it.
Politicians live and breath polls , so i'm not really expecting it to change.

In January 2021, an Essential poll reported that 53% supported a separate day to recognise Indigenous Australians; however only 18% of these thought that it should replace Australia Day. A poll by Ipsos for The Age / The Sydney Morning Herald reported in January 2021 that 28% were in support of changing the date, 24% were neutral and 48% did not support changing the date.

Results were split by demographic factors, with age being a significant factor. 47% of people aged 18–24 supported changing the date

The 2022 IPA poll found 65% were opposed to changing the date, including 47% of 18–24 year olds, with 15% of the general population and 25% of 18–24 year olds in favour of changing it

Is ipa a right wing poll group? There is no hope of the date changing with a referendum so wonder canavan suggested that. I reckon it turning very quickly. Obviously a real small sample size but I’d say most of friends who are close to 60 have gone from never change it and stop whinging say 5 years or even less ago to just change the date so we can all enjoy it.

If China invaded us 100 years ago , we'd probably celebrate South China day with a traditional BBQ pork stir fry and Shangri-la Beer.
What public holidays do they have in Tibet?
Not the same at all, but the Japanese have Constitutional Memorial day , commemorating their new constitution, written by Americans while they occupied Japan.

IPA is ultra right wing. I don't know if you saw Liz Truss crash the British economy and cost it 35 billion dollars, but it was because she was advised on her economic mini budget by the Pommy equilivent.
They are funded by Gina Rinehardt and a bunch of RWNJ extremists.

Anyway keep Australia day 26th Jan, my wife's birthday is 25th of Jan and we always have a family BBQ. Pure self interest.
As for Always was Always will be, nothing slogan.
As Bo Burnam sings, ' we still have all the land and money, it's just not as much fun anymore'.
Really if it gives first nations people more self esteem and currency, fine by me, in reality, they aren't getting my house.

Tend to agree, also think you've got to have rocks in your head to think anyone cares about what the date is changed to. Gringo said it best, most of us couldn't give a shit what day it's on as long as we get a day off. Personally don't care if it's changed but like you said they'll find something else no doubt.

Surely it’s better to try than just give up. And who cares if they only want the day off. What date it becomes may not make care. Keeping it at the 26th is making more and more people care. That means changing the date should be easy.

I'm lucky this year my work asked me if I wanted Friday off.

How good is the follow up fight video 😂
I for one will defend him - sharing news of big pharma toying with the idea to make people ill (and potentially kill them) for profit is something that turns me on.

I think it takes any impact out of it though. They have heaps to complain about but this takes one thing away.

Pretty alarming stuff no matter the source I would’ve thought 😎

Not really, it's alarmist. They mutate viruses to try to understand them or beat them all the time. They study shit like small pox which if it got out would be a nightmare. That said I didn't watch it, I'm just going off the headline.

If you gave up on trying to make vaccines you'd be negligent too. If the virus keeps mutating like it does there is a very good chance that we could have a serious pandemic hit.

I'd suggest to watch the video lol
