Because Andrews is a control freak and nothing gets done until he has looked over it and signed off on it

Feel sorry for all the small businesses that would have done ok out of it

It’s embarrassing for the State
I work in state government and this is such a ridiculous overstatement that has been run out now.

Im no Dan defender and no one in politics (maybe in history) has been as willing and able to knife their lieutenants but Dans oversight on stuff is no more or less than anyone else. Hes had some really good ministers and dep secs that hes thrown under the boss but hes always beholden to the department and their pricing.

The issue as ive seen in this is that there is pretty much no way to make the cost benefit ratio comes out positive, even with budget options exercised.

What...

Your original statement was "Because Andrews is a control freak and nothing gets done until he has looked over it and signed off on it".

Yeh, hes a control freak but hes no more of a control freak than any other politician and this idea that he would have been personally involved in initial estimates and business case costings is ridiculous.

Im not mounting a defence of him over the overspending (although his insistence on the big build likely keeps me employed) im saying this "Dan the Dictator" stuff is such a media beat up thats been swallowed up by the public.

Also, its actually like 3 projects that are billions over budget, most are either on or slightly over, which if youre in the industry is mostly from completely ****ed escalation. Again, not a defence cause that doesnt impact the fact were billions in the red, its just another incorrect line that the public believes.

Sure you’re not Dan

Hahahaha, no, not at all. Just educating those about government process. He is absolutely accountable for the overspend and all the other shit hes pulled (vote with your vote) but hes no more a dictator than literally any other state or federal leader and truthfully yanking the Comm Games was the smart fiscal decision.

Hopefully someone from government explains how they were then more nearly 5 billion dollars out with their costing, it would be interesting to know

That’ll be a start.

I can tell you as a starting point that escalation has ballooned on construction costs (40-50% rise on some materials). I’d also hazard a guess that existing delap reports were woefully out of date or wrong which happens on nearly every single brownfield or refurb project ever done.

I’m actually catching up with an exec director who just left the comm games next week. Happy to report back.

How much do you think it will cost the Vic taxpayers for ripping up the contract ? Being reported at around a billion

No idea, the initial reports on this stuff are usually way off. Anything for abandoning needs to be validated and quantified. I can only speak to commercial construction contracts but abandonment costs are always negotiated down from worst case.

Practical Engineering explains how projects go over budget.

Was dead in the water when you considered;

1) Regional Victoria.
If you think metro gives a shit to develop anything in regional, I've a pyramid scheme to sell you as a great deal. Just doesn't happen, period.
2) Don't do a Napthine.
And he didn't, so it's not all that bad in grand scheme of things. Just shit all round really, and that happens at that level.

As someone in the field that supplies some of those sort of materials, and say, since we're assisting the north east link, we actually broke sales records during pandemic times just for those sort of builds, was great time, lost more hair from it, would do again. And yeah, soz, but our costs up, everyones costs go up, and those times screwed with literally everything, Russia screwed with less when we ejected from them for comparison sake. Constructions zones also changing regulations at present with things, pretty pennies involved with many departments so yay flow ons, wooo.

This whole thing is magic for the libs. You have to assume that andrews has already been told several times by the feds no cash, no cash here, there was nothing in the budget and now he’s pulled the pin. So if good old albo finds some cash for a nsw games well there goes how many Victorian seats. Coming on the heals of what looks like a certain defeat in the referendum things could be coming apart in a hurry haha Peter Dutton lives 🤣🤣

Dutton is so unpopular he's up against it. The vic government signed up to the Com Games because they wanted some heart starters for the hospitality industry that had been shat on by Covid. It has since balanced out and no-one cares any more. No other country wants the com games or the olympics anymore because they are really expensive and don't have the prestige or cash injections they used to. Severe material cost rises, labour costs and inflation made it untenable to even think about it.

I'm just glad that they've pulled out of it. It was a massive waste of money. One thing it usually leaves you with is good sporting infrastructure but we already have very good levels of it. They'd be better to put in a few more ovals for amateur sport to be honest.

The Olympics and Com games won't be around in another 20 years.

The Olympics should go old school - go back to Athens and be permanently based there and all the athletes must be naked.

The TV ratings would go through the roof. The media rights deal - woah !

Olympics will adapt imo, but the com games are an utter meme nowadays, "Imagine the olympics without all the big nations" is a hard sell.

Women's world cup happening this week is a far better event.

Pole Vaulters are the hottest women's athletes. I will stand by this opinion.

We know a minister and he's very honest about who he thinks the dickheads are in the party. He rates Dan pretty highly. He can't fathom the anti Dan hysteria. Andrews keeps getting voted in because the Libs keep putting up irrelevant policy ideas and have a dearth of talent in the state party.

Donald Trump sent a few conservative governments down a shit road. The Aussie voters are very centrist. Anyone silly enough to step too far either way gets nutted.

Even John Prosciutto who is more of the centrist to left of the state Libs gets put up then they white-ant him when he puts up anything that looks centrist.

Andrews looks like he's a bit stale but he's not getting challenged until there is some soul searching internally from the Libs.

Hence we could do a budget version if they wanted to.
Probably track and field the only facilities that couldn't be easily brought up to scratch easily.
