The REAL mark of the century

No, on his own players back no contest, plenty better then that across half back.

And no to Moorecroft wouldn't have got that mark paid this year blatant infringement.

Did he mark it in 2007? I know he came down in 2007, but he actually took the mark in 2001. So he did not break any rules and it was an absolute cracker.

Shaun Smiths mark is the one that stands out for me - Biggest leap ive seen standing on shoulders of G Lyon

Bartel's mark running back with the flight is underrated imo, right up there alongside Riewoldt and Brown's efforts - Carey took a few rippers of that ilk in his time also ...

now, onto the spectacular stuff :

Brett Burton jumping clear over an opponents head (his toes barely clipped the bloke's head) and grabbing it clean at AAMI stadium, goin' back a few years

Warrick Capper standing on a North Melbourne opponent's shoulders/head and having a bit of a look around before claiming a clean grab at the SCG

Shaun Smith's famed hanger at the Gabba - the guy took a few rippers in his time, like Burton and Capper, a frequent flyer

Matty Richardson and Stewie Loewe are/were always good for a strong, high, pack mark - Kouta was adept at these in his prime too

Tony Modra over Glenn Archer and co. at AAMI was a gem

but, for sheer quantity, quality and variety of spectacular grabs over a career you can't seriously look past Gary Ablett snr. Many are documented on video, just as many live on only in the memories of those present at some of his earlier games
- his 'mark of the century' is slightly overrated (great camera angle on that famous footage; not a clean grab, but you'd be a twat not to pay it) but there are literally dozens of others that deserve more exposure and plaudits than they receive - mainly because footage is rare and hard to come by (though most of it is now on YouTube happily !!)

- one particular grab from Ablett in a state-of-origin game against WA at Subiaco was a stand out, huge leap, both vertically and horizontolly, and a clean grab ahead of two or three other players genuinely contesting.
_ His grab in the semi-final against Melbourne in '89 is pretty famous and rightly so, it was a bit pack, 5-6 players, all eyes were on Ablett and he came up with the goods in front of a packed MCG, juggling the pill 3-4 times on his journey above the pack and back down again.
The man had a raw leaping ability like few others, he had a violent spring that seemed to come from nowhere at times.

He did like to pull those kind of things vs North this is a highlight real of him, some ridiculous soccer skills, he can still play hopefully he keeps kicking ass in more slow-downs the EJ Whitten could stand to get him for a game.

Riewoldts is a poor man's version of that one. when the marking player is practically standing next to the guy that kicks it that is just nuts.

Riewoldts was good too, very very good.

Being a Brissy fan u wouldnt be biased right ?

I agree that marks running back with the flight should be rated at least as high if not higher than a simple lucky ride like Sampi's. You see marks like Sampi's regulalry across different levels of the game every weekend ...but marks like this one by Brown are truly special and never get enough cred in the longrun.

The three greatest ones i can remember like it are from Riewoldt, Brown and Bartel....of these the Riewoldt one i consider the best....about equal between Bartel and Brown....Riewoldts mark is underrated as one of the best EVER taken and i was lucky enough to be at the ground to see it....noone thought he'd get up and everyone around me had their hands on their mouths wondering if he had 10 broken bones...one of the wierdest "hushes" u'll ever witness went around the ground till he got up.

Of the high marks the two standouts for me have been Shaun Smith and Gary Moorcroft...cant split them...always great to watch.

I was there for the Riewoldt mark - I remember the crowd just went quiet coz I think most people assumed he must have broken his neck! At least we won that game - he did something similar against us in the wet last year to win the game for them.

In order for me:

Gutsy marks: Riewoldt, Bartel, Brown.
Spectacular: Sampi, Tarrant, Moorcroft.

I think there were better ones in the 90s but for this century those ones take it.

Sampi I like because he landed on his feet after it and boosted while in the air. Perfect mark IMO. Tarrant was good because he was being held while doing it.

The gutsy marks are very similar but I like Riewoldts because of the pace he was going, then Bartel because he very nearly tackled the kicker, then took the mark, plus he's a smaller guy compared to the other two.

Gees, had forgotten the Ashley McIntosh mark v Essendon.

For guts, I love the Brown mark as I was visiting Melbourne and at the G' for only the second ever time for a game of footy.

That said, the impact and velocity of Riewoldt's.......wow!

Oh please, Simon Black and other skillful mids are shoving the ball down his throat every week, have a look at RICHO if you want to see poor delivery ;)

not any more, take a look at any of the lions games over the last month, our younger (and older at times) players constantly kick it to the advantage of the defender (or defenders), meaning Browny has to do something miraculous every time just to take a mark.

For me, the best mark I've ever seen was Brett Allison over Gavin Crosica (I think), around 1990-91. The only time he touched Crosica was when his feet landed on his shoulders, and both were bolt upright when Allison took the grab. Clean, perfect.

Everytime I see Riewoldts mark, I keep thinking that if I was coaching that day I would have dragged him.

Blatant sillyness to go for a mark like that when ya got a teammate (Steven Milne) running onto the ball 3 metres in the clear.

But maybe I'm the only one who remembers football is a team game.

Ottens' mark is underrated if anything. He would have been about 20-30 cms higher than any player in the history of the game has been. Absolutely ****ing massive :thumbsu:

Riewoldt ran from almost where the ball was kicked with his eyes on it the whole way.

I doubt he would have had much of an idea that Milne was there somehow.
