Where's their small bubble with a majority concentration of supporters (like Geelong)?
Sydney?

They have the benefit of both - you think Wollongong is in Sydney?

The Wollongong area which is roughly the size of Geelong is attached to them, plus they have half the southern area of Sydney and are a huge club.

Sounds like a problem for anyone but Geelong, they say the same shit when any Vic team people don't like wins.

GWS and Suns flags aren't the fix people are hoping for me.

We only drafted 3 players that year: one of them was a premiership centre half forward called Ablett, another one was an All Australian centre half back who would have been in that premiership team except he injured his foot two games before the finals that same year…. Not sure it was the bust you make it out to be.

Anyone you drafted who could get a game was a Premiership player.

Anyone you drafted who could get a game was an AA player.

Ottens was by far the best and most influential player you added to your list that year.

All sides plan, but they don't always come to fruition. Lefau was going okay without any support (bare minimum Kosi), until he did his knee. No Lynch made it even harder. Then the next two talls were injured for the season. Gibcus can also play forward.

Luck, or lack of it can play a part. We had 8 players over 195cm all out for the season by half way through it or did not play at all. That is not planning.

Like Riewoldt, Hawkins was gone well before the injury.

This is exactly right. If Richmond had a dream run with injuries like that Cats in 2024 and they had a shocking run like us, we'd be here saying Lefau is a find, Gibcus looks a star, and look at Brown, who was excellent from when he came into the team, Campbell looks a terrific young player, Rioli is one of the better pressure forwards and so on. But our forward line was thrown into total disarray and the midfield for most of the season was completely disfunctional due to injuries. And most of our best young players missed most of the season.

If Richmond never gifted Geelong Max Holmes we'd likely be in a more precarious position than the prelim whilst rebuilding we find ourselves in now. It was considered a left-field selection at the time by some sections but what incredible foresight that was by Wells and the team.

Holmes was a great piece of recruiting by Geelong. But this was no error by Richmond. The probability of Richmond selecting Holmes with that pick would have been very low. We got Brown, you got Holmes and both clubs were better off.

No one will ever know, but if they're the blokes who are responsible for spending Richmond's 2024 draft bounty you'd hope they would've given him some serious thought.

Richmond possibly decided from early on to trade out of the 2020 lottery if they could and into the much stronger 2021 draft. Geelong obviously had good intel on Holmes and this created Richmond's opportunity to do what it wanted to do.

Richmond swapped pick 20 in a miserably weak draft ofr pick 17 in a much stronger draft, and that pick 17 could as easily have landed a good few places higher as well.

If Richmond had selected a layer other than Holmes, can you find another available player who you think Richmond would rather have on their list now than Brown from that 2020 draft crop? Brown to me looks like being a really good player. The Cats themselves and Swans were both said to be really keen on him.

Or just pick Holmes at 20?

Tigers have lost their way to 13 flags. How many have the Cats won their way to before Tiger draftee Ottens showed them how it was done?
Ottens hated Richmond. He desperately wanted to play in a premiership team and could see it wasn’t going to happen at Richmond during his football playing life.

He is now regarded as a Cats icon. Few people will remember he played for Tigers once.

So how come we play our home games against you at your home stadium? How come we wont get a home prelim final this year? You only won the 2017 grand final because our home final against you was played at your home ground.

Geelong is not only the most disadvantaged team in the afl. Its the most disadvantaged team in world professional sport.
Geelong are the only club that get to play games on their training ground... it's a huge leg up over the Melbourne based clubs, as none of us are able to play on our training grounds. We all have to play at MCG and Docklands stadiums! No one gets to train on those grounds!!

Cost of living is significantly higher in Melbourne.. compared to Geelong, so please explain how Geelong are at a disadvantage?? The league is already the GFL thanks to your cheerleaders in the media... and Gerard Whateley is the worst of them!

In the words of the great Gerard, this post is very 'Richmondy'.

Geelong can always catch up, Richmond can never be a foundation club of the league.
Can never be foundation club ❌
Won first flag before Geelong ✔️
Won more flags than Geelong ✔️

You seem to enjoy history, so here is some for you.

In short Geelong got an 11 year head start in the V/AFL, failed to win a flag before the Tigers joined the league and then watched on as the upstarts in Yellow and Black claimed a first flag before them in 1920. Richmond then embarrassed Geelong further by going B2B to have two flags before the Cats had even registered one.

It wasn’t until 1963 that the Cats could claim to have won more flags than the Tigers, with the tally at 6-5.

Lo and behold, come 1967 Richmond draw level by winning their sixth flag, defeating guess who… yes, Geelong by nine points. This was the start of one of football’s greatest dynasties, with the Tigers winning a further four flags up to 1980. At this point the head-to-head tally stood at 10-6.

Both teams then endured significant premiership droughts. Geelong would wait 44 years before winning three in quick succession to close to within one flag of the Tigers (10-9). However Richmond would respond, winning another three flags (including their third B2B triumphs) of their own.

Geelong have since won a 10th flag to now leave them languishing three behind Richmond’s, and it must be noted, one of the least successful foundation clubs.
