The state of AFL Commentary- a solution

Ok this is now ridiculous. Time to do something about it.

You name it, every game we're lumped with a BT, or a Derwayne, or lord help us a Dermie or an Underwood.

I mean ultimately it's good for gate takings. It makes teh ideal being to go to the game. But those of us at home do we really have to suffer?



I PROPOSE

Can we not setup a Patreon, and fund genuinely good/funny commentators to call the Kayo feed live on a Youtube/Twitch feed? There'll probably be sync time issues, but honest to god I'd take that over having to listen to Derwayne again.


Who would you reach out to to call a couple of games a week?

I'd love to get Alex Williamson (Shooter).
Would even slide into Tony Armstrong

There's actual hilarious talent out there which would make listening to games a pleasure, not being subject to inside jokes from has-beens.

I'd be happy to commentate some of St Kilda's games but I would be even more biased than some of the current commentators.

They would also need to bleep out a lot of my commentary when any umpiring decisions go against us which happens quite a lot.

The people who decide who the put on these commentary teams are so disconnected from what people actually want. The fact that they only employ former a grade players is funny too. They could probably save some money and improve the quality by employing guys like matt hill.

There must be a better approach than the current, which is:

1) name the person with the ball
2) read random/stat from a prompter
3) wax lyrical about glory days
4) suggest "he's gone next week for that"
5) repeat

Isn't that the point of expert comments. They are experts in there field.

Commentator is a different beast where you want people who sound good and articulate well and preferably have a very wide vocabulary.

Doesnt the new tv deal start next year where 7 and foxtel will have seperate commentary for the same game?
If 7 notice people tuning into Foxtel on Friday night to avoid BT
Or foxtel notice people flipping over to 7 to avoid Derwayne, it might cause a change?

Unfortunately the best commentators retired or other reasons. Such as Bruce, Dennis, Clinton Grybas, Sandy Robert’s etc. We need new commentators to replace some of today.
