Most goals in a quarter by a Bulldogs player.

Other people may know of extra instances they would like to mention.

These are only some relatively recent instances I know about or have read about. Other people may know of extra instances they would like to mention.

Didn't Grant kick 5 in a quarter against Port in the late 90s?

Bazza kicked four goals or more in each of his final eight games.

4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6
Total: 40 goals

If we compare those figures to the greats of the game in their final eight games:

Tony Lockett (not including his comeback season):
1, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 8
Total: 37 goals

Jason Dunstall:

9, 8, 4, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1
Total: 30 goals

Gary Ablett:

0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 6, 7
Total: 22 goals

Peter Hudson:

1, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 6, 7
Total: 30 goals

Doug Wade:

2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6
Total: 30 goals

Peter McKenna:

1, 1, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6
Total: 26 goals

Gordon Coventry:

0, 2, 3, 4, 6, 6, 7, 9
Total: 37 goals

Bob Pratt:
1, 2, 2, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6
Total: 30 goals

I actually tried fairly hard to find someone who betters Bazza's record. Jack Titus and Leigh Matthews aren't worth including cause their stats are very underwhelming. The only one who dominates this that hasn't been included is John Coleman, but including him would defeat the purpose of this post. My entire point is how good Barry was as a veteran, an old statesman. Yes, I could include Coleman's 53 goals, but as a 25-year-old in his prime, I don't think that's entirely appropriate.

After a recent trip to the State Library I have found three other instances of a Footscray player kicking 5 goals in a quarter, one each from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s (thanks to the Sporting Globe microfilm). I have now inserted them into my original table at the top of the page. Should I discover any more in the future, I will add them.

Round 23, 1992.

Bulldogs 3.5.23 at Quarter Time.
West Coast finished with 3.5.23. In fact, we held West Coast goalless until the 20th minute mark of the final quarter, and they (aka the premiers) only kicked two points in the first three quarters.

Why do so many people talk about the Carlton game from the previous season where Mark Arceri kicked Carlton's only goal late in the final quarter? I reckon the West Coast effort the following year was a far more memorable effort.

The Carlton one was both significantly later in the last quarter, and only happened because of a dodgy free.

They weren't the premiers, though, and they had a total of nine scoring shots to 3/4 time, compared to West Coast's two.

I just discovered that this has only been achieved a total of four times, where a premiership team has been held goalless in a match for three consecutive quarters.

The three previous times these occurred were in the early 1900s. I am therefore happy to announce that the Bulldogs are the only team in the modern era to hold the eventual premiers goalless for three consecutive quarters.

Just joined BF. I could be wrong on this but I always remember going to a game at WO in '92 against Dees where we won by just over 100 pts piling on a big last quarter. I always thought DelRe kicked 5 in the last having not done much in the first 3. Would be a little depressing to find out I'd inflated his effort in my memory.

This will be something interesting to research at another visit to the State Library, unless someone else beats me to it.

Welcome! Was it in 85? Someone mentioned it recently

Thanks. No, I did some limited digging and I think I must have been thinking of Rd 13 in '92. Dogs won by 107 after kicking 10 in the last. DelRe got 7 - the missing piece unfortunately is quarter by quarter but that must be the game I'm thinking of.

Great! I'll have to watch it :)
