The dismantling of practical social and economic organisation based on what works and subsequent shift to 'expertism' and the necessity for large parts of society to receive theoretical, university education happened within living memory for many in what the West refers to as the 3rd World.

One of the long-term effects of structural adjustment [the insertion of Western social and economic structures] was to dismantle or weaken the education and health systems. There is no viability for education and training in many parts of Africa. We did not have a university system in Mali, for instance, before the Structural Adjustment Programme. We had what they call the Grandes Ecoles which train people to become immediately operational. Whether it is the Ecole National d’Ingénieur Bamako, Institut Polytechnique Rurale in Katibougou, Ecole Nationale Superieure, or Ecole Nationale d’Administration this is how they were conceived from the lower to the higher level. People were trained to tackle problems and respond to the needs of the country and its people. This was then transformed by the impacts of structural adjustment so that people acquired a degree but without any real knowledge, or any ability to get things done. [added]

Of course, exactly the same phenomenon has hollowed out Western societies and economies, it's just beyond our living memories to recall a better way of doing things.

And we have no shortage of 'experts' armed with fistfuls of degrees who endlessly assure us that this theory over practice (let alone - God forbid! - lived experience) method of education and organisation really is vastly superior. Like all 'progress.' ;)

We're not really 'destroying the planet' - the 'planet' will go on just fine, but quite probably without humans, unless we evolve very interesting digestive systems.

“They’re having a blast,” said study author Matthias Egger, head of environmental and social affairs at the Dutch nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup. “That’s really a shift in the scientific understanding.”
Anemones like to protect themselves with grains of sand, Dr. Egger said, but out in the garbage patch they are covered in seed-like microplastics. Squeeze an anemone and the shards spew out, he said: “They’re all fully loaded with plastic on the outside and inside.”

Unrelated, but interesting:

without humans is fine by me, its just a pity we have wiped out so many innocent ecosystems on our way down the gold plated gurgler
