If you don't play as a defender you just wont get it. There is more to laying a spoil than just punching the footy which he's good at. Against the hawks and on three occasions against Richmond in round 1 where he was right with his opponent but he was still out-marked. If he was so good he wouldn't have been. It looks great when he punches it but when he doesn't and his opponent marks through lack of a body spoil it's not so good. Jamison is clearly our best "spoiler" both technically and with his ability to punch the footy. Bootsma is a good at punching the ball but is not technically a good spoiler. It's common for young players not to be in the habit of body spoiling, it will come. 200 games of footy as an undersized defender, I've learnt that if you don't make a habit of body spoiling you will get made to look silly.
