It seems that 2 by 2 by 2 is set to continue. Hodge and no doubt Gibbo this year. There were times last year when I thought Burger might be just about done, but his form this year has been excellent and I reckon he could go around one more time. So Burger and maybe even someone like Poppy at the end of 2018?

Agreed. Hopefully Birch can hang on til 2019.

For some reason, not sure why, but I feel Cyril might decide to pull stumps a little early to return up north...

I'd hate to see it, I hope you're wrong, but yeah, Cyril may feel like he's got nothing else to achieve in this game, retiring as one of most decorated players in history, and head back to his people.

You guys realise Cyril was All Australian last year? Why would he quit? Surely has couple of years left.

Think for Cyril having almost the entire year out would whet his appetite for next season and beyond.

I have no idea now. I was a big fan of trading anything with value at the start of the season. I might still be happy with that. The young players have stepped up though which means there are less missing pieces.

The Hawks might only be a general and a gun mid away from challenging again. How to get them though?

Agree
Jake lever...would be huge
A lauchie whitfield type of player,
A fit jom & rioli next year were back in finals contention.
That's without breaking the bank

Off - Hodge, Gibbo, Willsmore, O'Rourke and Poppy (would rather Burgoyne sitting in FP so delist or trade) plus Surman and Fitz from Rookie list

Burger and WhiteX to retire 2018.

The next few years will be interesting as we have so many players born late 1980s who will be gone by 2020.

Seriously? We are 2 games behind the Swans and 3 behind the Saints with only 7 to go.

In addition, our run home includes: Cats, Dockers at Domain and the Swans. I know we are a chance to beat North, the Dogs, the Blues and the Tigers, but I think finals are well and truley gone.
It's still a possibility which is good enough for me.

List management, time for me to get into the details of the Hawks!

Retirees/Delistings: Hodge, Gibson will both retire. Fitzy will join Surman in giving up on the game, due to concussions. Teia Miles is a likely delisting and he'll probably be joined in that by Willsmore. How many players do we have to turn over a year? Put a lock on Burgers going on another year as we need that experience and he can perform any role.

Trades: Common call as of late, but I can see Puopolo going to Brisbane for a decent pick. Questions will definitely be asked of a few of our other players; expect external pressure on Stratton, and Schoenmakers will get a lot of interest as a free agent if he maintains this form. Hopefully enough that if he does move on, we net a decent compo.

Targets: Midfield depth. Don't be surprised if we go after a few smaller fish from clubs like St Kilda who have plenty of players to rotate through that area - or out of favour players from clubs like Melbourne. Jack Trengove anyone? As for big fish I'm expecting the Hawks will go hard at Martin, Kelly and Lever - in that order. Whether or not we get one or none, they will be pursued.

In terms of a realistic 2017 "First 22" based on players we already have listed - I can see this:

FB: Hardwick, Brand, Heatherly
HB: Birchall, Frawley, Burton
C: Hartung, Roughead, Smith
HF: Burgoyne, O'Brien, Henderson
FF: Rioli, Gunston, Breust
Foll: McEvoy, Mitchell, O'Meara
Int: Shiels, Sicily, O'Rourke, Ceglar

Obviously that last ruck position depends on team balance. McEvoy has shown a lot as the team's one true ruck with the occasional chop out from Rough or O'Brien; in that instance Ceglar could be interchanged for Lovell, potentially Cousins or Morrison (I've got a good feeling about that kid).

What's O'Rourke done to get a spot ahead of him?

I'm basing it on who I believe has the ability to perform better at a certain role, and Jono has a higher ceiling than Langford - though we haven't had much time to see it yet.

JOR will be given an extra year, at a minimum as a rookie. We're not in a position to delist and we lose nothing with him as a rookie
especially considering next year cat a rookie listed players don't have to be upgraded to play senior footy

cat b has not changed

It's not a case of whether he can keep playing, but he's been in MEL for 14 years now, has a kid, and may do as a few have said - what else can I achieve in the next 2-3 years?

Make another 1.7mil or so and set up life better for himself and his kid.
If he went back north he'd likely play local footy anyway, so why not earn a nice income out of it?
Not like he hasn't lived here since he was boarding at High school, got a tonne of great mates, or gets paid to play a kids game.

Think you're not taking into account how much Cyril loves the Club.

You're forever retired, but only get the chance to play whilst the body is good. He'll be around for another 3-4 years at least
