Probably a waste of time throwing money at a second team in Sydney.

As Gillian said, attendances are decining for Swans games .... even finals matches and television audiences are dropping too.

They are better off putting a team in from Tassie. At least they are keen for a team, are long time participants of aussie rules and they support the games at Aurora Stadum strongly.

Gillon McLachlan talks like a w***er (this is the same administrator who said that playing a game at night enabled more TV viewers to consume the match).
But the overall point is correct - Sydney's level of support for AFL isn't yet at the point where the AFL would like it to be. It may never get there.
Australian football is unlikely to ever be the number 1 code in Sydney - it certainly won't happen in our lifetime. But there is room to expand our game within Sydney, and although it won't be the biggest there is scope to make it bigger than it currently is.

Not having read the whole thread, it seems to me this (the OP) is just an argument of semantics.

"AFL State" does not, to my mind, indicat a stae wherein AFL is the most popular sport, necessarily. Merely a State wherein AFL is a widely acknowledged and popular sport.

Surely it's obvious that all codes want all states to acknowledge them in this way, AFL/NSW & NRL/VIC alike?

what people over look is that rl or afl arent reaching the african and india communities. makes more sense to convert new immigrants. play games in india, bring out an bollywood or cricket star to a game, give free tickets to new immigrants and get development officers targeting the african communities (you may actually get funding from the government).
