Sure you can form an opinion that someone doesn't deserve an average. The best example would be where there isn't a sufficient sample size to compare players achievements. Brad Hodge is a perfect example, however:

Brad Hodge has a test average of 55, because he scored 503 runs and was only dismissed 9 times

Michael Bevan has an ODI average of 53, because he on average score 53 runs before he was dimissed. The fact he had a lot of not outs is irrelevant.

It's probably a multi-day match that's not over yet.

Even losing a granny you go get pissed as a team after, surely.

Correct, 2 day game but we might go into a reserve day because it's rained like no one's business in melbourne today.

We got destroyed for what it's worth...

Lyon is a joke - Vijay goes after him third ball. With Ahmed, Agar and Beer around for the next ashes series, aside from other options like Doherty himself and O'Keefe, he should be nowhere near the side.

Yes, but averages can sometimes be misleading. Everybody here will say that Ponting and Tendulkar are both better ODI batsman than Bevan (who was good, no doubt), but have lower averages.

that may be so, i'm not disputing opinion

all i am disputing is you cannot inflate and average. It is what it is.

Dont want to derail the thread so i will leave it at this.

Pretend for second a career is one continuous individual game, you are batting, when you get dismissed you start another innings immediately, there are no innings breaks.

Thus there are no such thing as a not out.

That is what an average is. It is increased by scoring runs. It is reduced by getting dismissed.

It is not increased by not being dismissed, it is not reduced by not scoring runs.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't really think Henriques is bowling that badly. Over before last, second last ball, he bowled a pretty shit one - short, slow, batsman picked it a mile off and dealt with it accordingly. Aside from that it's been looking pretty okay to me. Decent line, good variation in the length, getting some angle.

I guess his big problem is that he's not really threatening for wickets, which gives the batsmen a sense of security to be more adventurous.

EDIT: His speed is very military as well. He mixed it up nicely in the first couple of Tests, to good effect. Not sure why he's changed that.
