At least no one is suggesting that we could have used Bird right now. He probably would have wept seeing this pitch. Any sane quick bowler would.
Yeah, Bird getting injured cost us - him and Patto should be first picked fast bowlers.

I see that Lyon didn't do his homework about bowling in Indian conditions. Each delivery pretty much 90kmh, meaning that none of them have any opportunity to dip or spin. Why is he playing for Australia again?

Why would anyone assume that Jackson Bird - who has never played in India before - would bowl well here?
Why would anyone assume that James Pattinson? - who ha never played in India before - would bowl well here?

It's all good and well talking about horses for courses and all that but maybe that's been talked about too much.

James Pattinson did well in the first test by the use of speed. I guess bowling at Sehwag helps too.
Ok, moving on.

Would you say or not say that James Pattinson was our best bowler, (not pace bowler, just bowler) in the first two tests?

The time zone is not great, so I mostly watched highlights on Sky of the second test - watched some streams of the first.

He's our best young quick overall. A bit of a hothead but that's a help more than a hindrance when you are a quick. He can get caught up trying to bowl wicket taking balls when wickets don't come easily rather than concentrating on pressuring the batsmen consistently but he's very young and willl get better at that as he bowls more.

I think the fact is, that him, Siddle and Henriques were the only ones to play both tests and he bowled better than him. You have a good point but doesn't detract from the fact that he was our best bowler.

Yeah, but Pattinson and Bird are very different bowlers. I suspect that Bird would struggle because he's not express and even on pitches with a lot of juice his swing and seam movement is very subtle. He gets wickets with nippy little balls that jump up and bite the batsman on the glove, or move very slightly and beat the bat/take an edge.

Those sorts of deliveries wouldn't do much on dead pitches like this. His movement would go from subtle to nonexistent and the edges wouldn't carry. Sure he's accurate but that only goes so far. If he played I suspect he'd have very similar results to Henriques - quite economical but not that threatening.
