Whilst it is interesting to watch the young ones our side is not going to win many if any games over the next 6 weeks. We are in real trouble folks for 2023. If you think we will i suggest thinking again.
Don't rate us against Eagles and Suns at home? Or Essendon at the G?

We've got Swans (AO), Dees (MCG), Suns (MRVL), Eagles (MCG), Cats (MCG), Essendon (MCG), Port (MCG), Giants (GS), Freo (OS), Saints (MCG) up to the bye round - round 14.

We should win at least 6 of them which would leave us 7 wins, 6 losses, 1 draw with a decent run home.

I reckon nank and lynch go down with a decent injury EVERY year
Yes not suprised from the illegal battering they both get from the oppo...which the Umpires/AFL turn a blind eye to...really a case for H+S to be of a concern for their physical safety in a work place environment!
Use to be the stars of the game got the benefit of the doubt with some frees...cos that's who the public want to see in action...but now...it's a case of the Umpires allowing them to be physically and illegally battered!

Some could say while your still in contention year after year you attract talent. You only have to look at the cats as perfect example.
That cats have played in a Prelim for a decade while transforming the list. We will have done sweet F all for three years at this rate. This is looking like a Hawthorn loading up on O'Meara and Mitchell for mine at this stage. Midfielders are a dime a dozen it's the KPP free agents that are shown to move the needle on flag tilts.

Taranto was a pick #2. He’s 25yo with what should be 5-6 years of his best footy in front of him. If we were not planning on contending from 2023-2028 then the club can go at get farked.

We had pick #12 and #19 which could have been Corey Ellis, Ben Lennon, Lochie O’Brien etc…. Just a lottery. So why on earth wouldn’t you get a 25yo gun midfielder? Sure, he’s not playing his very best footy, but he’s been in our system for 5 friggin minutes. And he has been pretty darn good.

Then Hopper has a quiet first week, is BOG his second game but gets a freak knee injury, misses a game and then is average on his first game back, probably still struggling with knee bruising. Give the guy a bloody chance.

2023 is not the be all and end all. TT and Hopper will be great players for us for a long time.

And take me through the alternative - take picks 12 and 19 to the draft and get 2 x kids who wouldn’t be playing yet. Our midfield would be getting demolished 10x as badly as now. Then in 2024 with Cotchin retired, Prestia likely injured … what then?

Don’t people realise that guns like Rioli, Bolton and soon Balta all stay at the club because we’ve shown we are trying to win flags whilst they are in their prime? What would they think if we got draftees in, had a diabolical midfield (like the Roos did for 5-years and the Hawks have now?) and were rebuilding for 6 x seasons…. as we come out of the rebuild the likes of Vlastuin, Broad, Grimes, Nank, Rioli, Short, Macca, Cotchin, JRoo, Soldo, Rioli, Baker, Graham, Martin, Prestia are all retired or getting close to it.

Just because injuries look to have curtailed our 2023 campaign, there’s no reason not to be optimistic about 2024 - players in the prime sweet spot of 23-29yo in 2024:

Hopper: 27yo
TT: 26yo
Baker: 26yo
Vlastuin: 29yo
Short: 28yo
Rioli: 26yo
Soldo: 27yo
Balta: 24yo
Bolton: 25yo
Graham: 26yo
Cumberland: 23yo
Young: 25yo
Miller: 24yo
Ross: 23yo

Imagine you take out TT and Hopper - may as well pack up the next 5-years and go home. No thanks.

Do you honestly believe the group above is not capable of doing great things when you see teams like the Saints and Pies flying?? then you’re being way too pessimistic.

Then who knows what we get from talented youngsters who will hopefully be flying from 2024 onwards:

Sonsie
Gibcus
MRK
Ralphsmith
Brown
Banks
Campbell
Ryan
Dow
Biggy
Smith

I love the optimism but this is looking like a Hawthorn more than a Geelong strategy. STK have been building their list for years and now due to being so shit for so long the number of decent kids is massive with 25 B graders on the list. Collingwood are better coached and playing a better gameplan right now. I have my doubts on them this year but they still have young players like Daicos which are Judd like.

Unless we can pull a father son out of our arse, I see pain coming. There is way too much talent that is outside of their peak and they can't run out games now. Presia, Cotchin, Riewoldt, Grimes (even Lynch is injury prone), Martin, (No Edwards, no Lambert, no Rance) and it shows. Our FA fill gap in Tarrant is cooked as well. You simply cannot replace that star power and think we will keep up with a Carlton, Melbourne, Dogs, GWS, etc moving forward with their young talent. We should have traded some players with currency when we could have in 2020 when the writing was on the wall. We would already be halfway through a rebuild by now.

Unfortunately I dont think we win many apart from Hawks and Eagles. TT if your scenario plays out that would be great. Full team and in form we go close to winning the whole thing but alas i cant see it happening.

If you like being negative perhaps you should post at the bay instead, there's plenty of your kind over there.
No i like being positive when there is something to be positive about. I don't know what "post at the bay instead" means so not sure whether to take offence or not. Either way take an objective look at our current situation.

Injuries have given us the opportunity to get 'games into the kids' for years.

Like I said end of last year, who is managing our players? Who are our performance managers and physios? Who are the people managing our playing list?

Unacceptable

Not sure how the performance manager & physios can be blamed for the following injuries: broken foot(Lynch), sydnesmosis(Nankervis), broken hand(Bradtke), chronic hip(Tarrant), hamstring tendon (Gibcus stumbled awkwardly), rolled ankle(Nyoun), wrist ligaments/tendons(Brown) ankle spurs(Smith) and back (Colina). You could make a case for Graham(hammy) Short(calf) Campbell (adductor) being performance manager/physio related if you can prove they're the result of negligence on their part.
Can't be ignored how McRae, Leppa and Caracella leave Hardwick and he hasn't done anything new about our game style to change it.
First time I'd been to a game since round 1 on Saturday and there was a noticeable difference in how we tried to move the footy, with a determination to get the ball back into the corridor and to then run at the opposition to draw them out of position to create openings down the field. When it clicked in the second quarter we looked as damaging as we have for a very long time. Sure there were occassions where it went horribly wrong, but I believe we are trying to implement a new style of play that will bring together our ability to win the ball at the contest and the added run and spread that we're trying to bring in with the likes of Clarke Hugo and even Cumberland being involved in the play further up the ground in addition to the run already provided by Daniel Short Baker & Bolton plus the hard gut running of Taranto McIntosh Pickett & Prestia.

It even extends to both ends of the field with our back 6 looking at being a lot more versatile and mobile with Balta Gibcus & Young to form the backbone of our defence and then the likes of Daniel Short Baker Ralphsmith providing run and carry moving forward. Up forward we've brought in Ryan to bring in a more mobile second KPF who can pinch hit in the ruck, we also got Miller up to speed in a similar role. Surrounding them at ground level, we look to be trying to load up with attacking options in Bolton Martin & Noah, with Maurice and Mansell providing the defensive focus.

Over the next few weeks while Nankervis and Lynch are missing it might not look as good as it could given we'll be relying on inexperienced in the ruck and at KPF with Miller and Ryan possibly being the go to options with Jack as support up forward acting more as an onfield coach and mentor, than the number 1 target he was a few years back.

I don't mind a bit of a down year in building towards a future premiership and developing players, the sad and frustrating part is that if we are going to have a year where we don't win as many as we want, and potentially might even miss finals, is that we don't finish with a first round pick to support that rebuilding year, which is a real shame.

The Taranto and Hopper acquisitions were win-now plays, designed to capatalise on Dusty, Grimes, Riewoldt, Lynch, etc. while they were still around, it'll be a swing and a miss if we don't contend in the next year or two IMO based on that trade and the draft capital it cost us.

Really, really keen for Miller and Ryan to get a solid look of 6-8 games as two vital cogs rotating ruck and KPF most likely.

TT and Hopper are not 30yo! They have just turned 25yo and 26yo. Dusty was into his 8th season and turned 26yo when he hit his peak in 2017, and he’s still capable of great footy 7-seasons later.

Don’t listen to Karen Cornes and other shock jocks …. TT and Hopper are here for the now and the future. The club is not stupid.

Do a bit of research and you’ll see this is not even remotely close to the Hawks situation. They had almost no talented youngsters when they got JOM, Mitchell and Wingard. One they had they traded to Port (Burton). One other was Sicily.

We had 7 players with under 50-games on the weekend. This week we will probably have 9. I think the side has been rebuilding whilst you’ve been asleep …..

We haven’t had top-10 picks so of course we haven’t had access to the same elite talent as others. But I’m amazed at the level of young talent we’ve got given how successful we’ve been.

We’ve been dealing with loads of injuries for 18-months, mental health issues with Dusty, retirements of Caddy, Lambert, Edwards, Houli, Astbury …. and after all that our last 7 x losses since R11 2022 have been by a total of 36-points.

You’re way too hard to please.

We are going unbelievably well and have a very bright future given we are a post dynasty team.

Yeah there was a marked difference in the way we look to move the ball, not just speed wise which was very evident, but like you said, looking to engage the corridor a lot more. Can’t wait till it all clicks,

Rebuilds take 4 years? Or less? We won a flag in 2020. Its been 2 seasons since then. 2. So half way through would mean a 4 year rebuild if we literally scrapped the team the off-season after winning a flag. Or 2 years if we started last year.

This is the problem. Too many fans completely underestimate how long it actually takes to rebuild and then on top of that the fact that the majority fail and you need to restart after a few years.
You mention Carlton as a team we have to keep up with. They started rebuilding in 2015. Its 2023 and they haven't even made finals yet.
Melbourne? Took from around 2008 to 2018 to make finals. I mean as a Richmond support you should know how many false starts it can take.

The absolute constant pursuit of 'we must be successful NOW' is what kept Richmond shit for 3 decades. Not working right now? Scrap it, try again. Lost a few games to start the season? Scrap it. I thought we moved passed this mentality when we saw what happens when you stick with a plan and don't overreact after the tiniest bit of failure. This mentality would have had Dimma sacked in 2016 for sure. Actually it wouldn't have even seen him get through 2014.

Can we just chill the **** for a bit. We won a flag 2 seasons ago. We've still drafted heavily with 5 top 30 picks a season ago and have some talent. Lets just sit back and enjoy footy. Watch some literal all time Richmond champs play their last games while also watching some super talented kids develop. Its insane how many are so ready to just scrap these once in a lifetime players because they can't handle not being a very top team for a couple seasons.

Some could say while your still in contention year after year you attract talent. You only have to look at the cats as perfect example.
Good example. Cats were written off as being too slow and old for the past few seasons. Didn’t stop them in 2022.

We had/have a hole in our list with lack of core aged players (24 to 28) and lack of midfielders in that age range. We partly addressed the issue the best we could last season. I don’t see the problem.

Sounds like some people want us to go down the path of north melb and hawks - a decade of rebuilding with kids. A lot of pain.

We are rebuilding on the run. Don’t underestimate the influence a guy like Tarrant has had on Tyler Young. I am sure sonsie, Dow, Clarke, banks and any new recruits etc will be much better for having the likes of Hopper and Taranto around.
