Tigers get no joy from bid to shift game

RICHMOND'S bid for a venue shift later this month, which would upstage Geelong's premiership flag celebrations, has received a lukewarm response from both the Cats and the AFL.

The Tigers late yesterday officially requested their round-four Sunday afternoon Simonds Stadium clash against the reigning premier be moved to the vacant Etihad Stadium given 25,000 fans could potentially be locked out of the smaller regional ground.

But Geelong has scorned the attempted game switch, pointing to the long-planned unfurling of its 2011 premiership flag that day and its contractual obligation to play a minimum seven games at the Kardinia Park stadium, which is being rebuilt and can fit only about 26,500 fans. Etihad's capacity is close to double that.

We would probably not have to play there if we started winning but what a joke that only 200 tickets will be available to RFC members. Joke:thumbsdown:

Why would any Richmond fans want to go anyway?

They'll get pumped.

The Cats need 50,000+ to make it financially worthwhile playing a home game in Melbourne. Richmond are incapable of drawing that sort of crowd.

Funny you should say that considering Richmond out of the 8 have drawn more than Hawthorn top 4 on multiple occasions.

We could definitely draw 50k to this match. We could potentially draw way more than 50k to this game in the future and you know that.

It's been like that for ages, get over it.

If you were a better side, it wouldn't happen.

Remember that playing in Geelong is the equivalent of an interstate game. How many tickets are available to RFC members when you play West Coast at Pattersons? Couldn't be more than 5000k or so given the stadium capacity and West Coast's membership numbers?

If you didn't want this to happen, you should have never stopped playing games at Punt Road Oval. Then it would have worked both ways. Unfortunately your pathetic club has suffered at the hands of bad management over the years, and their poor foresight has cost you dearly.

It's a home ground advantage for a reason.

I doubt you'd be willing to give up a game at a ground that you have an amazing winning record at just so a few more opposition supporters can fit in through the gate if the roles were reversed.

Never going to be changed for R4, though by making this request publicly, and the AFL acknowledging its merit, the chances of us being scheduled down there again in the next few years are very slim indeed.

Which would be a win.

Have a point re: most of our 47,000 members being shut out by virtue of this suburban ground being a bulding site. They'll pack it out anyway, so why not play all the interstate clubs down there?

It's called marketing

Richmond have the luxury of afl marketed games vs collingwood, essendon and carlton

Really... I think not.

It's been a long time since Richmond v Geelong drew 50,000.

Considering you've been playing home games at the MCG since the 1960s you'd expect a lot of them.

However, only twice has Richmond v Geelong topped 55,000... most recently in 1980.

We've had to play at Etihad the last few years and so who cares if Tiges ar eunhappy about going to Geelong for a game? The AFL has fixtured it there so that's the place the game will be played. Richmond has played Geelong many times before there even when the Melbournisation of games has commenced.

Ironic that Caro has used her media position to comment on this issue effecting her club.

Looking at it another way, are Geelong folks unhappy that they get interstate and recently crap teams playing at Skilled?

Surely you'd like to host a contender one day?

MightyHawks says Richmond are incapable of drawing 50,000+ a Richmond vs Geelong game..

Which game would draw more if all teams were sitting in the top 4?

Richmond vs Geelong (MCG)
Hawthorn vs Geelong(MCG)

We all know the answer..

Your hatred and jealousy of Richmond is so obvious.

And there we have the difference between us and you...

You guys say you want to go to Geelong games, but you don't really...

Geelong request Home matches at the MCG against Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon and Hawthorn.

They don't want to play home matches in Melbourne against anyone else.

I would suggest Hawthorn and Geelong. Rivalry, Hawthorn has more members and figures have shown this in recent times regarding crowds.

Actually the AFL makes us play these games in Melbourne such as St Kilda. Having said that it is to our advantage to host them in the big smoke.

We had Port in 2007 beat us at Skilled.

.... and the Tigers yesterday questioned why clubs such as Carlton and Essendon - which have fewer members - were not fixtured to play at Simonds.

So Gale thinks bad idea for Richmond to play at Geelong, but suggests the solution is one of 2 top 8 teams from last year, with large memberships to play there instead?

Simple solution I would have thought.
Richmond make the finals, show that they can compete against the top teams onfied and that allied with membership will ensure less trips to Kardinia Park.

For the recod Geelong beat Richmond, by 10 goals,at Etihad last year in front of a crowd of 33,761.

Well last time Hawthorn and Geelong were top 4: 2011 Round 2: 78,579

Last time Richmond and Geelong were top 4: 1995 Round 8: 65,335

Jealousy??? of Richmond??? :D Seriously???? :D:D:D:D:D

What better precedent than last year...

Round 18 2011 Geelong V Richmond: 33,761

...and there is your answer
