Tim Paine caught in sexting scandal, resigns as Test Captain

The only thing I’ve said
The lack of self awareness by you is not surprising with all the assumptions you have in your mind of what others think and try to project those poor assumptions onto another. If you approach a discussion in the wrong manner, do not expect another person to waste any more time on you.

I won’t argue that smith is a great captain, but who else is there? Sometimes your best choice might not be that great. I think having one of your main bowlers as captain is going to cause a lot of issues, captain bowlers notoriously struggle to bowl themselves the right amount as they over analyse, and get massively fatigued whilst fielding which impacts decision making.
Bowlers get injured more often too. Hopefully Pat won’t, but this is why Smith is vc, his input will be vital.

Sandpapergate was the cherry on top of a growing perception that Smith wasn't a very good skipper and while I'm happy for him as vc and support for Cummins, I'm also happy that he'll never have the job fulltime again.
I don't think Smith was ever going to be a good leader of men but I think he was really improving tactically as a captain. His tour of India as captain was really good from a tactical perspective and he and the coaching staff had obviously done a heap of planning going into it.

Are you okay? Why do you keep waffling on? What is your opinion on the topic?

It was more a response to those who say he shouldn't be captain because he was a weak or poor leader, rather than a comment about forgiveness.

I can understand people thinking some things are unforgivable, even if I don't agree with it in this case.
I just don't see any evidence that Smith has matured. He's a peculiar character; it makes him a great player but not a great leader, imo. I consider sandpapergate a stain on the game and Smith should have received the same leadership ban as Warner. There's nothing stopping him from offering Cummins advice from first slip, Australia should have moved on from him being a leader permanently.

So lets say Cummins turned down the offer to be captain, who do you think should be captain and vice captain if we don’t use smith and don’t use a fast bowler?

Australia is lacking in leadership, no question, but I'm not ideologically ruling out fast bowlers. If Cummins turned down the role, then Hazelwood or Lyon would have to be the next candidates. But I don't think there was ever any question of Cummins turning down the role, so the only issue is the vice captaincy. Even though I'm not convinced he has any more leadership qualities than Smith, I would prefer Labaschagne take the VC role, then either he matures into the role, or he gets overlooked for someone else when it is time to appoint a new captain. Smith is still there to offer advice, but as I said, I don't think they should have gone back to Smith in any formal way after what happened in South Africa.

If you think Lyon is a candidate to be captain of Australia then I just don’t know how to…. Far far worse option than smith… hazlewood as well has never shown any indication he wants to be a leader, you’re just pulling names out of a hat.

No, I'm pulling out names of people who have security in their spot. As I said, leadership is lacking in Australia. But I don't care if Hazelwood has 'shown any indication he wants to be leader', Smith has been leader and shown he is not up to it, so Haze would automatically be a better option. The two worst options for captaincy are Warner and Smith, so everyone else is an upgrade.

Labuschagne appears to have the maturity of a 15 year old. If he is going to mature in to any sort of leadership role he better get a move on.

Maxi would run rings around all of them as a leader. Pity he’s had a line through his name.

Maxi burnt his own bridges and never performed well enough in test cricket when given opportunity. He was widely known as being a difficult team mate. Ive witnessed some of his difficult behaviour personally myself. In a regional BBL training match years ago, the day before a school day was organised with kids from across the region attending a clinic and meeting players. He was the biggest star there at the time and refused to remove his sunglasses for a team/group photo. He then sooked it up and refused to sign autographs for the kids as all other players stayed for over an hour.....he went and sulked in the change rooms. If you behave in a petulant manner you aren't captain material let alone fit to be a test player.

Doing fine as Stars captain. Very popular teammate in IPL and ODIs. Plenty of kids just love him. You caught him on a bad day, as you say "years ago". Nobody ever knows the full story behind certain behaviours but that's not the rule.

He put the line through himself by consistently failing to perform. He is not good enough to play test cricket and hence why he would never be in any conversation about being the captain.

Did he consistently fail to perform? In his last 2 series as a Test cricketer he was 2nd and 3rd on the averages list for Australia.

He averages 26 in test cricket, he failed to perform. Just still don't get this tag people keep putting on Maxy that he is this special cricketer. He is just another in a long line of talented players that failed in the ultimate format of the game. Nothing special at all about him.

Yeah, I'm sure he matured heaps in last 5 years. One of my family members used to play tennis with him as kids and sounded like a bit of a drama queen back then. When people are young and trying to be excellent at a sport some of the behaviour can be off. Most grow out of it by their mid 20's

He is extremely competitive, as a youngster took losing or falling short very hard. He sets a high standard for himself but is uncompromising about what works for him. He challenges himself in every situation. He also has an excellent cricket brain.

Agreed. That is what I assumed he was like when my family member said he used to throw tantrums in their tennis games against each other.

He only played 7 Tests.
He never going to be a specialist bat at Test cricket.
Basically has to turn himself into a decent off spinner.

Greg Matthews should be the type of player he model his Test cricket aspirations on.

Wont help, bowling all rounders rarely have a place at Test level for Australia, just look at James Hopes and Neser.

Maxwell offering a spin option has given him a few chances, not impossible he goes to India next year given he has a hundred there but once those SC tours are done that will be about it.

No, I'd see him more as a batting allrounder at 6, if he ever became a decent enough off spinner to help take some wickets.
If Maxy works on his bowling maybe in 3 or 4 years time he can spend last few years of his cricket life as a Test cricketer.
Unlikely, but if he wanted it enough, it not out of the realms of being achieved.
