Tim Paine caught in sexting scandal, resigns as Test Captain

He averages 26 in test cricket, he failed to perform. Just still don't get this tag people keep putting on Maxy that he is this special cricketer. He is just another in a long line of talented players that failed in the ultimate format of the game. Nothing special at all about him.

You could argue maxwell could have at least been given more chances, harris is on what his third chance for australia now? he is 29 years old never really played a single innings that made you think this bloke is test quality and he averages 23 but we are backing him in for an ashes series.

No, I'd see him more as a batting allrounder at 6, if he ever became a decent enough off spinner to help take some wickets.
If Maxy works on his bowling maybe in 3 or 4 years time he can spend last few years of his cricket life as a Test cricketer.
Unlikely, but if he wanted it enough, it not out of the realms of being achieved.
He'd be 37 in 4 years.

I agree but I think they are both average test players. Just because one average test player gets some chances doesn't mean other average players should get them.

Maxi burnt his own bridges and never performed well enough in test cricket when given opportunity. He was widely known as being a difficult team mate. Ive witnessed some of his difficult behaviour personally myself. In a regional BBL training match years ago, the day before a school day was organised with kids from across the region attending a clinic and meeting players. He was the biggest star there at the time and refused to remove his sunglasses for a team/group photo. He then sooked it up and refused to sign autographs for the kids as all other players stayed for over an hour.....he went and sulked in the change rooms. If you behave in a petulant manner you aren't captain material let alone fit to be a test player.
Thats poor but all the dealings Ive had with him are the totally opposite of that

Ok, was listening to the radio where a local Perth presenter Simon Beaumont has a sport section with Will Schofield and Tim Paine came up. Simon then said being in the news room we know more and have chosen not to broadcast the further info, but I'm surprised people out there have not joined the dots yet. Anyone know what he's talking about?

Do we need to know? It should be a closed subject by now unless there have been laws broken, none so far.

Agree, kind of a scummy move to hint at more. Basically tars people by letting imaginations fill in the gap without giving Paine right of reply

I got the impression the comment was not aimed at Tim but possibly Cricket Australia as they had just been discussing the relationship between Cricket Tas and Cricket Aus. What Tim does on his own time is up to him, but I do feel Cricket Aus are accountable to the public.

“I felt they were driven by the need to protect their image, they’d got in someone to look after them and he’d decided that I had to be sacrificed to save them, they were hanging me out to dry,” he writes in the book.

“The board had met that night and it was clear to me that they wanted to cut and run. I think that’s why they got Nick and the consultant to call me.

“I was disappointed and I was tired of this. I was prepared to cop the flak for what I did, but in my mind Cricket Australia had abandoned me and made it look like they thought I’d sexually harassed someone and so everyone else would think that too. I felt like them flipping almost vindicated the story.

We all know CA is rotten and crooked, sounds like Tim really did have to learn the hard way.

Somehow I like and respect him more now. He has decided not to kiss ass but to tell the truth.

May cost him money down going forward, and he could miss out on invitations to junkets and so forth.

That's how they keep people in line, by making it a case of 'stick to the script or the gravy runs out'.

Steve Smith and Davey Warner stuck to the script and have millions more than they would have if they spoke the truth.

Poor Bancroft tried to stick to the script, and where did that get him? Languishing back at sate level for the rest of his career.

CA, not even once.

As far as I’m concerned he always seemed like a smarmy, slimy creep to me. It’s ironic that he complains about CA trying to save face when that’s the only reason he Bradburyed his way into the captaincy in the first instance

Cricket Australia have been useless pricks since they hung Symonds out to dry.

They're lucky we're a cricket loving nation, and T20 came along to kiss them on the dick.

It's all anecdotal evidence but I reckon cricket is on the decline big time. Feel like kids couldn't really give a shit about it these days. Pretty sure participation numbers are falling. So much competition these days.

This is the key point that.so.many miss. He and Cricket Australia built him up to be the great family man who everyone respected.

As soon as that myth was blown he was done.

Most players would of kept their place in the side and people would of forgotten about it.

Unfortunately for Paine, he simply wasn't a good enough Test cricketer for him to survive controversy.

Alex Carey has matched his average, despite his awful Ashes series.

I'm not even sure he would have been in the team by the time he stood down if he wasn't captain.

The participation numbers CA reports are basically fradulent since IIRC they use the Milo cricket little kids activities to boost the numbers (nothing against milo cricket, but it doesn't translate into kids taking up the sport and as such is pointless stat-stuffing by CA).

Also, with benefit of hindsight the only alternative way CA would have handled it is immediately sacking him and publicly putting him on blast when it happened. A cover up or immediate sacking are the only two plausible scenarios with the context of the team just getting through a media storm, so while I understand why Paine feels aggrieved he arguably got the better option (and brought it on himself, it's not like CA created the situation he was in).

Alex Carry has been awful. Multiple dropped catches every game.

Paine was good but he was projected as something he has never been a saint.

Yes, I saw a report saying 600,000 girls and women are playing Australian Rules.

Now I'm loving the increase in female participation in sports that has come as a result of an increase in publicity regarding female sporting competitions, whether that be the AFLW, NRLW, women's cricket or women's soccer...

But anyone who believes roughly 1 in 12 Australian females (between the ages of 5 and 50*) is playing Australian Rules is only deluding themselves and actually doesn't help with the promotion of female sports because it just gives ammo to its detractors to what are obviously flawed numbers and can pull out claims like needing to exaggerate to seem relevant.

Honestly, I would be shocked if there are even 1 in 12 males (within that age bracket) playing Aussie Rules given it's a minority sport in NSW and Queensland.

Those participation stats are dodgy as ****. Not just double counting, but triple (or more) counting goes on. They take all sorts of irrelevant camps, events, sports days etc and just throw them on the pile.

* 50 is being a very generous upper level as well

What do you mean by poor Bancroft?
He was selected for Australia post incident and unfortunately failed.

He’s young, and will be back if form warrants.

Yep.
My girls don’t follow cricket at all, but recently Ashton Turner came to the school to run a clinic and hand out free merch.
I assume they are now included as participants.
The clinic was during class hours, and therefore compulsory.
