Friday October 4 - Free Agency Window opened

Elliot Himmelberg (the Adelaide one) joins Gold Coast as a Free Agent. Adelaide receives no compensation

Josh Battle joins Hawthorn as a Free Agent. St Kilda are gifted Band 1 compensation- Pick 8

Harry Perryman joins Collingwood as a Free Agent. GWS receive pick 16 as their gift - Band 1 FA compensation

Tom Campbell joins his fourth club moving to Melbourne after being delisted from St Kilda. Not even the AFL could fabricate a gift to St Kilda this time

Nick Haynes follows the GWS to Carlton super highway as a Free Agent. They’ve already received their present today so no compo for the Giants

Turns out there was another gift today for the Giants after all. Isaac Cumming joins Adelaide as a Free Agent and GWS get pick 21 because ….

Let’s face it, **** knows why they just do

Not news, but an update on where things stand ahead of trade period officially beginning

Draft picks held after adjustments from the first day of free agency -
3,26,62,80 + pick 3 in the rookie draft

Confirmed list changes -
Gaff(retired), Baker, Trew and Jones all delisted

Leaves us with 41 currently listed players -
35 main list, 4 rookie list and 2 Cat B rookies

Possible departures via trade -
Darling to North Melbourne most likely for a R4 pick (67)
Barrass to Hawthorn for pick 14 and possibly their F1 with something going back (our F2 or F3)

Players without a contract extension for 2025 -
Rotham, L Edwards, Witherden, Burgiel and Culley
Talk of a potential extension for Culley hasn’t eventuated and he has reportedly spoken to a handful of Victorian clubs
Rotham has had interest as an UFA, most notably from Essendon and may find a new home. If not delisting beckons
The remaining players have not been spoken of as potential trades and face an uncertain future

Possible arrivals -
Jack Graham is deciding whether to accept a 4 year deal to join WCE as a FA or remain at Richmond on a similar deal. He toured Lathlain last week and a decision is reportedly imminent
Liam Baker has officially requested a trade to West Coast with a deal the subject of extensive speculation centering on the use of the pick 14 anticipated to come from Hawthorn for Barrass
Other names have been mentioned as possible targets like Garcia, Robertson and Carroll without any confirmation of their intentions
Curiously, Tom Clurey from Port Adelaide also continues to be tentatively linked to a move West

On a final note, trade period is the AFL media’s Grand Final with every journalist looking to break the next story, no matter how trivial or truthful, in a never ending race for clicks. In that pursuit, they are fed a smorgasbord of information from clubs and player managers designed to further their own objectives

It means a lot of bullshit floating across the interwebs so approach each bit of information with some healthy scepticism and wait for actual confirmation of something before reacting

Fingers crossed for a good outcome for our club over the next 10 days

First trade is done with Alex Neal-Bullen moving to Adelaide for pick 28 which is the same pick Melbourne sent to Adelaide last year for Shane McAdam as a then F2 selection

John Worsfold returns to the club to fill a newly created position as Head of Football

He will oversee the football operations of all levels within the club - AFL men’s, WAFL and AFLW and act as a mentor to the coaches at each of those levels

In the interview below, Worsfold goes into depth explaining what the role entails and he envisages it working

No direct impact to us but Richmond have sent a quarter of R2/R3 picks to Brisbane for pick 20 as the Lions seek to boost their points total to match an Ashcroft bid

Imagine the deal includes an understanding Richmond don’t bid on Ashcroft with pick 1

Melbourne empty out basically everything they have to get pick 9 off Essendon

Not worried about the depth in this draft they just want another pick at the pointy end

Essendon get the points to cover a Kako bid and now have two R1 picks next year

The worst trade in club history is now official

West Coast give picks 3,63 and 68

West Coast receive Liam Baker (5 year deal), Matt Owies (3 year deal), picks 12 and 73

Pick 14 from Carlton was handed over to Richmond for Liam Baker

In amongst the mayhem of this morning’s trade, we have appointed our new Head of Development - Jamie Maddocks who has held a similar role at the Western Bulldogs for the past 5 seasons

Dark Sharks will also be pleased to know the article confirms Jacob Brennan will continue as the forwards development coach

Catching up with other trades besides our effort

Brisbane who have been trying to secure more points for bid matches bizarrely do a trade that reduces their points. St Kilda slide back from 27 to 32 but gain 45

Complicated deal that sends Houston to Collingwood, Noble to the Suns and Lukosius, Richards and Atkins to Port plus a raft of pick swaps that leaves Collingwood with a trio of picks in the 50’s and no F1
