A bizarre rule in modern pentathlon has left an athlete in tears, after she plummeted from the gold medal position to last place.
Germany's Annika Schleu was leading the modern pentathlon - comprised of fencing, swimming, show jumping, shooting and running - heading into the jumping event.
Yet in modern pentathlon, athletes don't ride their own horses for show jumping. Instead, they get just 20 minutes to bond with an unfamiliar horse that they're assigned for the competition.
Bizarre isn't a bizarre enough word in this case.
Imagine the 4 x 100m on the track, you get to choose 3 runners from your national squad and the 4th gets picked at random from nominees from the local athletics club. Or Basketball where you pick up some random dude that walks past the court.
I wouldn't like to do the Modern Pentathlon in an eastern bloc country or China. Could imagine the Russians somehow drawing Phar Lap while everyone else gets leftovers from the glue factory.
