Unpopular opinion, Basil is not too bad commentating the swimming. Thorpe's a bit wet behind the ears but he will settle in with time.
Basil's problem is he doesn't always know the swimmers name, ie the Chinese woman is surging, and he tends to throw in hyperbol about Aussie swimmers. His actually ability to call the action is ok.

Thorpe is somewhat dull and doesn't appear to be that interested. He also doesn't have the personality of Duncan Armstrong or Neil Brooks.

As awful as Basil is at least he is trying. The worst swimming commentator ever for mine was Bruce in Beijing simply because it was completely obvious that he didn't give a shit about the sport and was there just for a pay check. When I turned on the relay where the girls upset the US for gold I actually thought it was a heat swim for most of it such was the lack of enthusiasm in the call from him.

Yeah, and even Winnington didn’t fill me with confidence in his post race interview. Actually thought he’d be a a huge gold chance, but now a medal might be a good result. We’ll see.
It’s more likely that all 4 of them were just watching each other and just assumed that they had pace.

Thorpe sounds bored, hardly any energy in his commentary

Winnington will need to swim the 3:42.65 he did to win the Olympic Trials to win I think.

4 of the guys SwimSwam predicted to make the final didn't make it.

Good strong swim in the 4x100, I would be surprised if we don’t win that one one easily probably in a WR.
