eh he got a game most of the time when he was fit... everytime he came into the side he would play a couple of games, look good then pull a hammy or something, the only reason he didnt play a whole lot was because of injuries and/or for disciplinary reasons. some essendon fans need to get out of their denial stages and recognise that we just lost a pretty decent talent

Obviously an attitude issue. Can play a variety of roles and there is no way you would delist someone with his obvious talent after only 2 years in the system.

There is no doubting he has talent, and you'd be suprised if he wasnt pick up somewhere at only age 20.

But the question mark on his personality may cause him to be avoided.

yep, no doubt about the talent. No matter what, someone as highly touted as him does not get delisted after only 2 seasons. Especially if injury has prevented him making the side.

I have heard a lot about his arrogance and bad attitude, and enough was obviously enough. Not a bad call if he was causing problems and does send a strong message.

Out Hislop, In Prismall. Add (hopefully) Hartlett in the draft and Essendon's midfield will have enough strong over the ball midfielders for the future in Lonergan, Myers, Watson and Welsh.

Hopefully Hislop can get his head right and go on and have a good career. Yes it would be a shame if that were to happen from an Essendon point of view but we move on. I rated him fairly highly from what I saw, his standout attributes were; Very Balanced, Handball, Aggression. The negatives were; Disposal by foot, Discipline.

Between being injured, suspended by the VFL, or suspended by the club, Tommy Hislop occasionally played football. On those rare occasions he looked like he desperately needed to get fit, but showed a little bit at VFL level and had one memorable game against Sydney where he was an inside dynamo. However he kept ****ing up, and had started to look a little slow (possibly due to injury). Knocking back the offer that would have kept him at the club was not a good move on his part.

Disappointing though, he may come good somewhere else or he could just disappear.

Whose midfield is worse? Fremantle is the only club even close.

If our midfield is so bad as you put it, then tell me how it was in the top echelon for inside 50's, clearances, first possessions, hit-outs etc when we won six games in a row?

Keep in mind that during that stretch most of our first choice midfielders were playing at the same time.

Here his original profile by Wiz

HISLOP, Tom (20 Essendon) [10]

Aggressive powerhouse. Plug n play. Versatile bullish onballer/flanker who can play small or above his height, has fairly good pace, takes no prisoners, always gives a contest and gets a lot of contested ball but currently doesn't look for, take or hit the right option often enough - too often kicks long instead of looking for short options (hand or foot). Other main concern AFL-wise might be over-aggression. Main selling points are physicality, competitiveness, courage, intensity, overhead, endurance, balance, strength, consistency. Trademarks are (1) Hardball get, then hurried disposal, (2) Crunch a pack or an opponent, perhaps taking a very strong mark that he has no right to take. Often clean, especially at ground level in "static" situations (although not "routinely: clean overall). If not for the somewhat high number of blind and other inaccurate kicks, I would rank him about #5. I love his competitiveness and aggression at both man and ball but he must start getting better return from his possession tally. Kicking was better in VFL than at U18. He is not a bad kick per se. Good depth and dual-sided. The issue is reliability. Kicking style needs work. He tilts to the left, which limits your error margin over a short distance, and his arm movements need work. IMHO it is important for both arms to work virtually in sync, helping your body stay balanced, both laterally and vertically. Hislop's arms are way out of synch and affect his centre-of-mass transfer and his ability to kick directly through the ball. Left arm often spends time bent at 90 degrees upwards then comes forward and across his body, while his right arm stays back, hangs down and does nothing. By the end of his kick he is often off-balance. Those faults should be fairly "easily" fixed and will make a big difference to his kicking reliability. Hislop and Armitage are similar types, age, great endurance and both are virtually plug 'n play. Both courageous hardnuts with good work rate and both with sub-optimal disposal. Hislop has more pace, is a bit physically stronger, and is the better kick. Hislop arguably has greater impact too. I would definitely take Hislop over Armitage, much as I admire Armitage. Jetta is X-factor vs risk but is a very quick, electrifying magician and is capable of being a quality user (not that he is yet). Hislop is none of those but he will deliver for you every time, whereas Jetta will switch on when it suits him. Jetta's pace, daring, flair and disposal makes him potentially much more of an impact player. Hislop is more a player who stops the opposition having impact through his hardness at man and ball but he too can turn a game. Likes to take opponents on and carry the ball and is often, although not routinely, judicious. Astute in corralling an opponent but usually prefers the bone-crunching tackle or bump. I have been impressed re how very switched on and intelligent he is at the 1/4, 3/4 huddles. With ever-increasing sophistication of team game plans, being able to be on the same page as the coach is more important than ever. Exceptionally strong overhead for his size, especially the big screamer from behind but can mark from any angle/position and attacks his marks / hits the pack like there's no tomorrow. He is on the slower end of the "quick midfielder" scale rather than the quicker end of the "slightly slowish midfielder" scale. Probably best suited to HBF or onball but, despite being only 184cm, is versatile enough to play anywhere down the flanks. Could be exposed by a very quick or very tall opponent but, even then, is likely to be at least mainly competitive, such is his ability to play tall yet also have enough pace and smarts to know where to run, how to cut angles and how to pressure both aerially and at ground level. Has the motor and competitiveness to become an excellent run-with (in time) and that's the role in which I possibly favour him.

Sounds like a pretty unsociable footballer. Hawks might have a look.

Dud.

Hope we don't go anywhere near this bloke. If Essendon - who have probably the worst midfield in the competition bar Melbourne - are delisting a top 20 midfielder, it just tells you how highly he is rated/what a ******** he is.

Pass.
Umm no.

Brock McLean, Nathan Jones, Cale Morton, Jack Grimes (pick 14 last year, back related injury this year), Brent Moloney, Shane Valenti - All very young

Im not sure what to think on this one. I had not really formed a strong opinion on him either way. I thought he showed some potential, but so do alot of kids who don't come on. If he was delisted for any other reason than the club does not think he will develop, or that they believe we now have enough similir styled players, it would be good of them to tell the supporters.

We have had a habit of holding on to some "potential" players far too long, eg Johns, Bolton, and soon, Dyson. Perhaps under Knights, the long term project player has become a thing of the past. If Hislop is still average in two years, fas would say we should of got rid of him sooner. On the other hand, if he goes elsewhere and becomes a good player, then good luck to him and that club. Its a risk that unfortunately every club has to take. And sometimes you get egg on your face. You can't win sometimes.

Either way, best of luck to the kid.

Balanced post BBH considering everything that has happened:thumbsu:

You should write obituaries:D

I wasn't going to bother posting, but having seen ANOTHER reference to Hislop's "memorable" game against Sydney, can you guys tone down the bollocks a bit, please?
An "inside dynamo" in a game your team lost by 91 points.
He was good, and from what I can tell, it was probably his best game. But the rest of it just your typical Essendon fan waxing delusional about the club's playing list.
And this about a bloke who's just been cut.

Still, Sydney might pick him up somewhere along the line, and turn him into a decent footballer.
Two words, little Bomber fans ... Ted Richards.

The problem is he was playing against all the local Tassie boys back then and his ability probably stood out like dogs balls.

Bit of a difference playing against Tassie kids to playing against the best in the land.

Exactly, thats why so many kids dont make iot, look great at under age but can never produce that form at senior level, unless its in a lower grade ie VFL

Can't understand all the hype about this.

Could barely get on the park for injuries, had discipline issues and struggled to maintain team rules.

Was offered a 1 year contract and said "no I will try my luck in the draft because I want 2 years".

No worries young man thanks and best of luck!!

Maybe he got some shitty advice from his manager and should have taken the one year got fit and shown something, then he would have been in a position to negotiate better for the 2 year deal he wanted.

I am over it already.

Ted Richards = Picks 19 (Courtney Dempsey) and 50 (Sam Lonergan). Revisit this at the end of 09 see who did better out of the deal.
